Mabel D. Sims was the eighth child born icon to the union of Jeff and Mary Brown of Lorman, Mississippi. Mabel was an educator as well as an advocate for the youth in her community. This was evidenced by her founding of the Our Lady of Sorrows tutoring program. However, her greatest accomplishment was being an outstanding wife and mother. Mabel loved selflessly, she gave generously and spoke tenderly but truthfully. She was a loyal friend to her peers and a “second mother” to many young women. She strove for excellence in all her endeavors as well as her appearance. This is why many referred to her as a DIVA…a glamorous, self- assured woman who was not afraid to be herself at all times. Mabel had impeccable taste and was a renaissance woman. Her style was sharp and her hats were memorable.

Mabel was very ambitious. She earned her undergraduate degree at an Historically Black College, Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi. During this time she was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority as well as being a secretary to the president of the university. She later earned two Masters degrees from Roosevelt University and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

She married icon Galester Sims, a fellow Alcorn alumnus who preceded her in death. From this union three children were born; Kim, Kelda, and Kirby. As a family they attended mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. During her time at OLS, she served as the Parish Council President. As a Chicago Public School educator for 40 years, she impacted many young lives before retiring from Lincoln Park High School.

On July 6, 2012, Mabel transitioned from this life. She leaves behind her brother A.J. Brown (Louise) of Lorman, Mississippi, her children Kimberly Sims-Barnes of Chicago, Illinois, Kelda Townsell (William) and Kirby Sims (Jo Ann) of Cypress, Texas and grandchildren: Kleo Star Barnes, Melani Diamond Barnes, Faith Margaret Townsell, Joy Mary Townsell, Robin Van Gilder, Emily Ann Sims, Morgan Daisy Sims, Kirby Seth Sims, Jr. and the “icing on the cake”, our latest addition, Karli.
