Let History record that Odean Velma Reed was born icon to Viola and Andrew Reed on March 20, 1950

In Russum, MS. Odean was the eldest of nine children from this union. She adored her younger siblings and took great joy in reciting their names; Calvin, Andrew Jr., Viola, Willie, Vernesser, Guestina, Christina and Patricia, while reminding one of their chores and at the same time placing emphasis on her position as the “Big Sis.”

Even as a young child, Odean’s soul was tightly anchored in the Lord. She was baptized within the Methodist faith at Watson Chapel AME Church. Throughout her life she patterned her words and deeds after the precepts of Christ. She cherished her memories of when she lived with her grandparents and truly treasured the melodious voice of her grandfather, “Papa Will” (Reed), a then renowned gospel singer who instilled in her the words of Christ through songs.

From the beginning, she was “as cute as a button” (with hazel eyes and very long thick pigtails) and “as sharp as a tack.” People from miles around recognized that she had superlative qualities as a student. Odean had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge; she loved to learn with every fiber of her being. She had an uncanny ability to remembering the names, house numbers, birthdays and unique characteristics of those he held dear. Her memory was simply astounding!

In school, she marched at the head of her class, with an easy grace. With tiny steps into Watson Chapel Elementary School, to McIntyre Middle School, on to Rasa A. Temple High where she graduated as a very proud “Buccaneer” in the Class of 1968. Two years later, she earned her associate degree from Utica Junior College. During all of these educational milestones, a thread of compassion, devotion and genuine concern for others was crystal clear.

Aspirations of a career path as a public servant were solidified in college. And, by her first assignment as a teacher’s aide and then as an Eligibility Worker with the Welfare office (where she served for over 36 years), a SOCIAL SERVICES STAR was born!

Odean enjoyed life and accepted all that it had to offer. She thoroughly enjoyed dining out (your kitchen or mine), shopping and most of all traveling, be it a road trip, church trip, or just a ride around the corner, you could truly count her in for the delight. Her last trip (Thanksgiving 2014) with Pat, Loyd, Lori, three of her great nieces, cousins and friends was an eight (8) day cruise from Miami, Florida to the islands of St. Maarten, St Thomas and Aruba. Although she might not have been at her best she participated in nearly every event and the side excursions. Odean thoroughly enjoyed herself and admired the scenery at all cost.

On the morning of September 18, 2015, Odean transitioned from this life at Promise Medical Center, in Vicksburg, MS. She was 65 years of age. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a nephew, Corey Walker, and a brother-in-law, Tommy Freeman.

Her memories are being treasured by her two sons, Michael Reed of Vicksburg, MS and Tyrone (Tammy) Reed of Charlotte, NC.; three brothers, Calvin (Dorothy) Reed of Russum, MS, Andrew (Mary) Reed and Willie Reed of Vicksburg; five sisters, Viola (Larry) Robinson, Vernesser Freeman, Christina (Leandrew) Baker of Vicksburg, MS: Guestina (David) Richardson of Long Beach, CA and Patricia Yelder of Anchorage, Alaska; one uncle, Ernest Reed of Gulfport, MS; three aunts, Rosie L. Lloyd of Greenville, MS, Mary Lee Walls of Ft. Riley, Kansas and Patsy Jean Duffin of Aurora, IL; five grandchildren; Deronte, Tyrone, Tyra, Malaysia and Tamelia; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including Brenda Scott of Jackson, Dale Harris and Adam Brown of Vicksburg, MS.
