Mary Louise (Lou) was born icon in Vicksburg, Mississippi on August 6th, 1951 to Mary and Leon Whitley. Her family included six loving siblings, of which she was the youngest girl. Mary Louise (Lou) spent her formative years in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Lou attended Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and was baptized at a young age. She was a proud member of the Rosa Temple High School class of 1969. In the fall of 1968 Mary Louise (Lou) moved to Chicago. In that same year she married icon Williams (Benny) Johnson (he proceeded her in death). Of that union she would conceive two beautiful daughters, Jaune’ and Danielle.

Ambitious and determined Lou attended Olive Harvey College. Her professional career was comprised of positions within the healthcare and finance industries. Lou will always be remembered as an extraordinary individual. In her home, she was a woman of impeccable hospitality. She had the uncanny ability to make anything taste good. When you got up from her dinner table, you were full, satisfied, and wondering when you could come back. She served her husband and family with fervor and great purpose. To all who had the opportunity to meet her, she made you feel like you were a part of her family.

Lou shared her uncompromising love and fervor for the Lord. Even through life’s most challenging situations praise and worship was INDEED her lifeline. As a true worshipper, she lived daily a spirit filled life, and was always excited to share the gospel with saved and unsaved alike. Mary Louise never felt that she was too good to get hands dirty and help the “least of these”. She was ecstatic about going to homeless shelters and onto dangerous streets to help feed the poor, both naturally and spiritually. Her love for the Lord allowed her to be able to minister to both the young as well as the old. As a bible scholar, she motivated others as her passion brought the word to life anytime she taught scripture. The fruit of her teaching was consistently reflected in the high numbers of people in attendance who LOVED how the Holy Ghost would use her to bring Biblical revelation.

In the Spring of 2006, Mary Louise answered the call to be a pastor’s wife when she was joined in holy matrimony to the late Pastor Jessie Wright. Alongside her new pastor and husband, she never skipped a beat in her quest to build God’s Kingdom and bring the gospel to those who were lost. She conducted many shut-ins, all night prayers, and fed many who needed spiritual and natural food. Over and over, she proved to be God’s definition of a Mother in Zion-she didn’t’ need a denominational title to affirm her or give her permission to do the work of the Lord. The evidence of the Holy Spirit at work in her life is reflected in the countless lives she touched in her sixty-three years on this Earth. Thankfully God knows, and on July 6th of 2015 called her to her just reward!

She was preceded in death by her husband Jessie B. Wright, parents Leon Whitley and Mary Whitley; three brothers, Dan Whitley, Lee James Williams, and Charles Williams.

To cherish her most precious memories are surviving siblings, Clara Pettis (Lovie) Memphis, TN, Bertha Mixon (Jimmy), Deloris (Rolando) Vicksburg, MS; her daughters Jaune’ Randle El (Antwaan) Leesburg, VA and Danielle Johnson Vicksburg, MS. Granddaughters Ciara, Aunna, Arynn, Alexa, Nichole, Lauren & Laiyah, Michaela, and 2 grandsons Eden (D.J) and Austen.
