FUQUAY-VARINA -- Miss Javela Lee Chavis, infant daughter of Chevala D. Davis, of 6509 Shining Creek Road died Sunday in Western Wake Medical Center in Cary.

Elder Thomas Washington will conduct the funeral at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Cutts Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Angier. Burial will be in Montlawn Cemetery in Raleigh. Arrangements are being handled by Dafford Funeral Home of Dunn.

In addition to her mother, Javela is survived by her maternal grandparents, Janet and Elbert Adams of Fuquay-Varina; her paternal grandparents, Linda and Herb Chavis of Clayton; and her maternal great-grandmother, Sarah Lee of Angier.

The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the church.

Evelyn S. Brown (Dated Thursday, October 28, 1999)

SANFORD -- Ms. Evelyn Simpson Brown, 66, of 2982 Pickard Road died Tuesday in her home.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home by Keith Miller and the Rev. Samuel Brackett. Burial will be in Ephesus Baptist Church cemetery.

Ms. Brown is survived by a daughter, Judy G. Martin of Sanford; three sons, Nathaniel H. Gladden of Garner, Tony H. Gladden of Sanford and Billy Gladden Jr. of Lillington; two brothers, Johnny Simpson of Carthage and Lonnie Simpson of Columbus, Ga.; five sisters, Faye Lindley of Kernersville, Maggie Yarborough and Betty Thomas, both of Sanford, Bonnie Denny of Carthage and Wilma Carter of Dublin; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

J. Othell Benson (Dated Thursday, October 28, 1999)

BENSON -- James Othell Benson, 81, of 1156 Stephenson Road died Wednesday.

Mr. Benson was a retired farmer and volunteer fireman.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Aubrey Williamson and Barry Barbour. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr. Benson is survived by his wife, Muriel B. Benson; a daughter, Teresa L. Benson of Benson; and four sisters, Leatrice Stephenson of Angier, Glenda Clifton of Lumberton, Shell Blanchard of Morehead City and Willa M. Stonerock of Leesburg, Fla.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert H. Beaty (Dated Thursday, October 28, 1999)

Robert Hovis Beaty, 84, of 620 Carroll Ave., Fayetteville, died Tuesday in N.C. State Veterans Nursing Home.

Mr. Beaty was veteran of World War II. He was a member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held at 8 tonight at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. John Tyson. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.

Mr. Beaty is survived by a son, Robert H. Beaty of Fayetteville; a sister, Ann B. Swain of Charlotte; a brother, Charles L. Beaty of Charlotte; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Muriel S. Graves (Dated Thursday, October 28, 1999)

LOS ANGELES -- Mrs. Muriel Evangelyn Swann Graves of Los Angeles, formerly of Sanford, N.C., died Oct. 21 in her home.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Love Grove AME Zion Church by the Revs. W.M. Gorham, M.N. Douglas and Chalmers McDougald. Burial was in the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Watson Mortuary.

Mrs. Graves is survived by a brother, William Swann of Sanford; and four sisters, Janie Swann of Durham, N.C., Gladys Swann and Tommie Lucas, both of Sanford, and Jeanette Hinton of Fayetteville, N.C.

The family will receive friends at 379 Doll House Road, Sanford.

Wilton Spell (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

AUTRYVILLE -- Wilton Spell, 74, of Vinson Avenue died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Mr. Spell was the owner and operator of Mickie and Terry Superette.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Autryville Baptist Church by the Revs. Richard Spell and Andy Pettigrew. Burial will be in Autryville Cemetery.

Mr. Spell is survived by his wife, Beatrice S. Spell of the home; two sons, Terry A. Spell and Mickie W. Spell, both of Autryville; a brother, R.B. Spell of Autryville; a sister, Marie Faircloth of Autryville; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Butler Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Terry Spell, 216 N. Gray St.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Autryville Town Hall Building Fund.

Mattie Smith (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

LAURINBURG -- Ms. Mattie Smith of 8900 Hasty Road died Friday in Hamlet Hospital in Hamlet.

Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Harry L. Pittman Jr., 50, of 5564 Butler Nursery Road, Fayetteville, died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Kathryne B. Murphy (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Mrs. Kathryne Burke Murphy of Buffalo, formerly of McCain, N.C., died Friday.

Thelma Hayes (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

GARLAND -- Mrs. Thelma Hayes, 78, of 1895 Harrells Highway died Tuesday in Rest Haven Nursing Home.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church by Dr. Samuel McDonald. Burial will be in Garland Community Cemetery.

Mrs. Hayes is survived by six daughters, Evelyn Lamb of New Haven, Conn., Gertrude Green of Durham, Edna Hayes, Creola Hayes and Patricia Lamb, all of Garland, and Linda Spearman of Irvington, N.J.; a son, Hosiey Lamb of Lake Waccamaw; a sister, Daisy Burns of Garland; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 3 to 7 p.m. at Summverville-Boykin Mortuary.

Ephriam P. Frizzell (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Ephriam P. Frizzell, 63, of 319 Glen Canyon Drive, Fayetteville, died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

LUMBERTON -- Waverly Edwards, 64, of 40 Marion St. died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Arthur Crawford (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

PHILADELPHIA -- Arthur Crawford, 67, of 5709 Hoffman St., formerly of Barnesville, N.C., died Saturday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Community Funeral Home chapel in Fairmont, N.C., by Bishop James Turner and Edward Turner. Burial will be in Marsh Branch Cemetery in Barnesville.

Mr. Crawford is survived by his wife, Janie Crawford of Philadelphia; five daughters, Doris Crawford, Joyce Crawford, Queen Crawford, Cynthia Crawford and Oneshia Crawford, all of Philadelphia; three sons, William Crawford, Benjamin Crawford and Alonzo Crawford, all of Philadelphia; two sisters, Louise Townsend and Alline Ray, both of Fairmont; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

John M. Cook (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

LUMBERTON -- John Murdock Cook, 60, of 3210 Popes Crossing Road died Friday in his home.

Mr. Cook was a self-employed welder.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Bear Swamp Baptist Church cemetery in Lake View, S.C., by the Rev. Doug Worley. Arrangements are being handled by Floyd Funeral Services of Fairmont.

Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, Ann R. Cook of the home; a son, Timothy Cook of the home; two daughters, Deanna Cook and Melinda C. Brayboy, both of Wilmington; his mother, Betty I. Cook of Marietta; and three sisters, Mary L. Curry, Olene Cook and Eleonor Wagner, all of Marietta.

Kelcey S. Carter (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

LUMBER BRIDGE -- Kelcey Shane Carter, 8, of 230 Michelle Road died Friday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in Hoke County Holiness Church in Red Springs by the Revs. Wallace Locklear, Eric Godwin, Truman Chavis and Elisha Dial. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Kelcey is survived by his parents, Abner and Kay Carter of Lumber Bridge; three brothers, Dakota Carter, Kendrick Carter and Dalton Carter, all of Lumber Bridge; a sister, Kenya Carter of Lumber Bridge; his paternal grandparents, Ray and Serena Carter of Red Springs; his maternal grandfather, Lacy Freeman of Lumberton; and his paternal great-grandparents, Mahoney and Susie Locklear of Raeford and Gertrude Carter of Red Springs.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Red Springs Funeral Home.

Kathleen C. Bush (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

Mrs. Kathleen Cagle Bush, 76, of 810 Executive Place, Fayetteville, died Saturday in Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Bush was a member of LaFayette Baptist Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in LaFayette Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Lee. Burial will be in LaFayette Memorial Park.

Mrs. Bush is survived by two sons, Joseph L. Bush of Williamson, Ga., and James S. Bush of Midwest City, Okla.; two daughters, Linda B. Floyd of Raleigh and Kathleen B. Genter of Fayetteville; a brother, Joseph W. Cagle of Southern Pines; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

Terrance Bradham II (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

Terrance Bradham II, infant son of Terrance and Eshanda Bradham, of 614 Brittany Place, Apt. C, Fayetteville, died Friday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Harris J. Bezner (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

PINEHURST -- Harris Junior Bezner, 73, of Pinehurst died Saturday in St. Joseph of the Pines Health Care Center.

Mr. Bezner was a member of the Masonic Temple. He was a Marine veteran of World War II.

A graveside service will be conducted at a later date in Adams Center, N.Y. Arrangements are being handled by Powell Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mr. Bezner is survived by his wife, Phyllis B. Bezner of Pinehurst; a son, Stephen Bezner of Sinking Springs, Pa.; three stepsons, Kurt Eitnier of New Providence, Pa., Keven Eitnier of Bainbridge, Pa., and Kent Eitnier of Plainfield, Pa.; a grandson; and three step-grandchildren.

Carlie W. Baxter (Dated Sunday, October 31, 1999)

ROBBINS -- Carlie Windol Baxter, 83, of 436 Emma Lane died Friday in Vencor Hospital in Greensboro.

Mr. Baxter was a member of First Baptist Church and Elise Lodge No. 555 AF & AM. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Baxter was a supervisor at Robbins Mills and a rural mail carrier before retiring.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest Ferrell. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Bennett Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Baxter is survived by his wife, Jewell W. Baxter; a daughter, Jan B. Bryson of Robbins; a son, Donnie Baxter of Asheboro; three sisters, Pauline Baxter of Greensboro and Mattie Navey and Anne Manley, both of Asheboro; three brothers, Winfred Baxter of Robbins, Billy Baxter of Ramseur and Henry Baxter of Bennett; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Kennedy Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
