Kannapolis, NC - Mrs. Ruby Wike Christenbury, 76, of 207 York Avenue, Kannapolis, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Susan German officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born November 5, 1925, in Alexander County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Rom Alexander Wike and the late Julie Munday Wike. Mrs. Christenbury retired several years ago from the Lab Department at Cannon Mills Company. She had lived in this area since 1940 and was a member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the auxiliary of Poston Perkins VFW Post 8989.
Survivors include her husband, Harold E. Christenbury; and two sisters, Mildred W. Brinkley of Kannapolis, and Mary W. Cole of Mooresville.

Ruth Montgomery Nolan

Born: June 5, 1932
Died: May 6, 2002

Rockwell, NC - Mrs. Ruth Montgomery Nolan, 69, of 5045 Phaniels Church Road, Rockwell, and formerly of 13320 SW 8th Street, Davie, Florida, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Susan Sifford, with whom she made her home.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Cabarrus Memorial Gardens in Concord. The Rev. John Sell will officiate.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 PM at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born June 5, 1932, in New Brittian, Connecticut, she was a daughter of the late Robert Montgomery and the late Anna Swanson Montgomery. Mrs. Nolan was a retired aircraft instrument technician.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Nolan; a daughter, Susan Sifford of Rimertown; a son, David Priester of Miami, FL; two step-sons, Gary Nolan and Kent Nolan; nine grandchildren, Sandy Deaton, Tim Deaton and his wife, Rhonda, Michael Deaton and his wife, Brandy, Richard Deaton, Ruthie Purcell, Susan Purcell, Priscilla Priester, David Priester and Donald Priester; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Deaton and Xavier Purcell.

Dorothy Jane Sides Vincent

Born: August 26, 1922
Died: May 14, 2002

Concord, NC - Mrs. Dorothy Jane Sides Vincent, 79, of 289 South Circle Drive, NW, Concord, NC, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord after one year of declining health and seven months of serious illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Friday, May 17, 2002, at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. Rev. Jim Bowen will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 PM Friday at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church.
Mrs. Vincent was born August 26, 1922 in Stanly County, NC. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Sides and Ada Stough Sides. She and her husband are the retired owners and operators of Fleetwood Dry Cleaners.
Mrs. Vincent is survived by her husband, Lawrence P. Vincent; three daughters, Kathy Richardson and her husband, Dale, of Winston Salem, Janie Halyburton and her husband, Joe, of Concord, Phyllis Vincent of Lexington; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Horace Roger Williams

Born: January 18, 1929
Died: May 18, 2002

China Grove, NC - Mr. Horace Roger Williams, 73, of 455 Eastside Drive, China Grove, and formerly of China Grove Road, Kannapolis, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, May 20, 2002, at Homestead Baptist Church in Kannapolis. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove. The Rev. Terry Brown will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 PM Sunday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born January 18, 1929, in Tallapoosa, Georgia, he was a son of the late Cleveland Williams and the late Jewel Ford Williams. He retired several years ago from the slasher room of Cannon Mills, Plant One in Kannapolis.
Survivors include his wife, Imogene Chandler Williams; three sons, Roger Williams of Landis, Douglas Williams of Kannapolis, Terry Williams of China Grove; five sisters, Billie Patten of Kannapolis, Edna Skinner, Geraldine Roach, and Dean Wright, all of Ohatchee, AL, Erlene Albright of Gaston, AL; a brother, Eugene Williams of Tallapoosa, GA; four grandchildren, Ashlyn Williams, Zach Williams, Jennifer Rymer and Mendi Shinn.

Ace "Ab" Albert Linker

Born: March 18, 1925
Died: May 21, 2002

Kannapolis, NC - Mr. Ace "Ab" Albert Linker, 77, of 2208 Lane Street, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at his residence after several weeks of declining health.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Friday, May 24, 2002, at Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church. Rev. David J. Duncan will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 PM Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of his son, Gary Linker, 4882 Concord-Salisbury Road, Kannapolis.
Mr. Linker was born March 18, 1925 in Cabarrus County, NC. He was a son of the late Norman Harley Linker and the late Annie Carter Linker.
Mr. Linker was associated with Akers Motor Lines and Central Motor Lines for 42 years. He was an active member of Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church. Mr. Linker delivered take-out meals from Lane Street Grill to Fieldcrest-Cannon Mills for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Aileen Long Linker, who died in 1991. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps having served in World War II.
Mr. Linker is survived by a daughter, Donna Annette Linker of Kannapolis; son, Gary Alan Linker, and his wife, Jackie, of Kannapolis; special friend, Betty Jordan of Enochville; sister, Maggie Keener of Kannapolis; two brothers, James Linker of Concord and Coy Linker of Kannapolis; three grandchildren, Meredith Linker Valentine, Phillip Bradley Linker, and Christian Aileen Goetzinger.

Rev. Billy Edwin Flinchum

Born: February 11, 1932
Died: May 22, 2002

Concord, NC - Rev. Billy Edwin Flinchum, 70, of 2167 Montford Drive, Concord, died Wednesday, May 19, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 22, 2002, at the First Wesleyan Church in Kannapolis. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Dr. Forbis Kivett and the Rev. Henry Williams will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 PM Friday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Born February 11, 1932, in Rockingham County, NC, he was a son of the late James Morehead Flinchum and the late Eunice Hopkins Flinchum. Rev. Flinchum was a minister in the Wesleyan Church and was a member of the First Wesleyan Church in Kannapolis. He graduated from Summerfield High School in 1950 and attended Southern Wesleyan University before graduating from Southern Pilgrim College in Kernersville with a Th. B in Religion. In 1960 he received an A.B. in Social Studies from Guilford College. Bill was in the U.S. Army from 1956-58 and was stationed in Oklahoma. In his early years as a minister, he also taught junior high school and acted as a counselor /coordinator in the Guilford County School System. He began his ministry in the NC West District of the Wesleyan Church in 1958, acting as a beloved pastor of nine congregations over the next thirty-seven years. After retiring in 1996 from the pastorate, he continued ministry as a teacher of the Wesleyan Class at First Wesleyan Church in Kannapolis and shared his interest in biblical prophecy in classes on the book of Revelation. Special interest included Carolina basketball, coin collecting, assembling puzzles, gardening and reading books of all varieties, particularly mysteries.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jathina McPeak Flinchum, who died in 1967; and three brothers, Walter Flinchum, Frank Flinchum and Sidney Flinchum.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Hartsell Flinchum; a daughter, Tamara Flinchum of Central, SC; a son, Phillip Flinchum and his wife, Marsha, of Kernersville; two brothers, Eddie Flinchum of Stokesdale, John Flinchum of Kernersville; and two grandchildren, Christian Flinchum and Morgan Flinchum, both of Kernersville.
Memorials may be sent to First Wesleyan Church, 301 Bethpage Road, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Wesley J. "Wes" Hathaway

Born: August 19, 1925
Died: May 26, 2002

Kannapolis, NC - His mansion was finished, and Wesley James "The Sign Doctor" Hathaway, 76, of 1802 Valwood Street, Kannapolis, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 26, 2002, at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Concord.
Come and help us celebrate his life at 8:00 PM Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Curtis Parker will officiate. Entombment with Masonic Rites conducted by Allen Graham Masonic Lodge #695 will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the church. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born August 19, 1925, in Chester, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Harvey Hathaway and the late Anna Simcox Hathaway. Mr. Hathaway was the founder of Wesco Signs in Kannapolis. He was known by many of his friends and associates as "The Sign Doctor" He was a member of Central Baptist Church where he was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School class. He was a member of the first Kenya Mission Trip in 1991 with Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Concord where he was an active member for 25 years.
He was a member of Allen Graham Masonic Lodge #695, the Scottish Rites, York Rites, and the Oasis Shrine in Charlotte. He served on the Oasis Shrine Directors Staff for over 25 years and was an honorary lifetime member of the Directors Staff. His first wife, Margaret McLemore Hathaway, preceded him in death on April 28, 1994.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Northam Hathaway; a son, Edward "Eddie" Hathaway and his wife, Linda, of Concord; a step-daughter, Susan Key and her husband, Dennis, of Enochville; a step-son, Richard W. Stevens of Salisbury; three brothers, Claude Hathaway of Claymont, DE, Albert Hathaway and Robert Hathaway, both of Rehobeth Beach, DE; three sisters, Betty Hathaway of Kannapolis, Ida Mae Hathaway of Rehobeth Beach, DE, Patty Stoterau of Huntingtown, MD; five grandchildren, Michael "Chris" Hathaway and his wife Susan, Amanda Key, Thomas Joshua Stevens, Candice Lee Stevens and Kimberly Paige Stevens; and two great-grandchildren, Christian Hathaway and Jeremy Hathaway.

Carol Ann Bunn

Born: April 8, 1977
Died: May 30, 2002

Rockwell, NC - Carol Ann Bunn, 25, of 3311 Gregory Road, Rockwell, NC, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, after a recent illness.
Carol Ann was born in Cabarrus County on April 8, 1977. She was a 1995 graduate of Concord High School and a 2001 graduate of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College with an associate degree in Business and Marketing and a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Society. She was employed by Kannapolis City Schools as a secretary at Kannapolis Middle School. She attended Friendship Baptist Church in Salisbury. She shared her creativity in church activities and fellowships.
Diagnosed early in life with Cystic Fibrosis, she endured it's complications until a lung transplant in 1997. After successfully surviving the transplant, she became a strong advocate for organ donations. She spoke numerous times on behalf of Lifeshare of the Carolinas. In addition, she was director of The Transplant Miracle Club of NorthEast Medical Center, which is a local support group for transplant recipients and future donors. She participated, as an athlete, in the Transplant Olympics in Ohio and Florida. Carol Ann also volunteered as a counselor for the National Kidney Foundation Camp in North Carolina.
Surviving are Carol Ann's parents, Franklin Wayne Bunn and Julia Wise Bunn of Rockwell; her maternal grandmother, Mary Frances Barrier Wise of Concord, her uncle and aunt, Perry and Crystal Wise of Concord; her cousin, Samuel Franklin "Sam" Wise, of Concord; and a maternal great-grandmother, Ida Weant Wise of Morganton, NC. In addition to her immediate family, Carol Ann will be missed by Chris Kinder, who gave caring support to her and her family.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Frank and Florence Bunn; and her maternal grandfather, Franklin Monroe "Sam" Wise.
The family will receive friends at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis on Sunday, June 2, 2002, from 6 to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be Monday, June 3, 2002, at 4:00 PM at Friendship Baptist Church in Salisbury with the burial following at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery in Concord.
In lieu of flowers, memorials and contributions may be made in Carol Ann's name to Ronald McDonald House, 506 Alexander Avenue; Durham, NC 27705 where she spent time recovering from her lung transplant.

Elaine Yarborough Shafer

Born: April 3, 1949
Died: June 4, 2002

Concord, NC - Mrs. Elaine Yarborough Shafer, 53, of 8845 Brandon Circle, Concord, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in Burke County, NC.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Back Creek Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. The Rev. Matt Merrill will officiate.
The family will greet friends following the service at the church.
Born April 3, 1949, in Monroe, NC, she was a daughter of he late Ralph Yarborough and the late Virginia Rutledge Yarborough. Mrs. Shafer was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Douglas Stuart Shafer; three sons, Paul R. Shafer of Boston, MA, James E. Shafer and John D. Shafer, both of the home; a daughter, Mary Jane Shafer of the home; a sister, Karen Nealey of Monroe; and a brother, Eric P. Yarborough of Matthews.

Mae Heintz Sherrill

Born: February 18, 1910
Died: June 10, 2002

Kannapolis, NC - Mrs. Mae Heintz Sherrill, 92, formerly of Walker Street, Kannapolis, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Brian Center in Mooresville after two years of declining health.
Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Rev. Sarah Weaver will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:00 PM Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Sherrill was born February 18, 1910 in Cabarrus County. She was a daughter of the late Zeb Vance Heintz and Margaret Bost Heintz. She retired from the sewing room of Cannon Mills after 45 years of service. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1927, and a life member of United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the St. James Sunday School Class, and the Crafty Ladies of Trinity.
Mrs. Sherrill is preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred H. Gaddy and Arlene Heintz, and a brother, Norman "Gabe" Heintz.
Mrs. Sherrill is survived by her son, Troy Sherrill, and his wife, Cindy, of Concord; sister, Frances H. Richardson of Kannapolis; three brothers, Gene Heintz of Concord, Max Heintz of Charlotte, and Everette Heintz of Kannapolis.
Memorials may be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church, 416 East 1st Street, Kannapolis, NC 28083.
