EMMA FEDDER GREEN

Emma Fedder Green died November 9, 2005 at the Health Center of the Carolina Meadows retirement community in Chapel Hill, after a prolonged illness.

Emma was born November 17, 1910 in Berwick, Pennsylvania, a small town on the Susquehanna River. She was the daughter of Julia Whitmire and Norman Fedder. Emma’s stories of growing up in Berwick became legends to her family. Her hikes over Berwick’s Jonestown Mountain always began with finding just the right walking stick, and as a parent she would instruct her children to do the same before their own hikes. Emma was an avid basketball player at Berwick High School. She would often smile and tell the story of one particular basketball game where she caused a foul, resulting in the crowd booing her. Hearing Emma talk of this always made her family laugh - that moment of teenage brazenness was so incongruous with the kind and generous Emma they all knew.

After graduating from Berwick High in 1928, Emma became active at the Berwick YMCA. There she continued to play basketball and earned a lifesaving swimming certificate. Emma always told her family, "Good things happen on Thursdays," and this stemmed from Thursdays being "Ladies Day" at the Berwick Y in the late 1920’s. Emma would return to Berwick throughout her life, visiting her Whitmire and Fedder families, and bringing her grandchildren to her brother Bob’s newsstand, her brother Don’s mill, and to see her brother Willie’s woodcarvings.

Early in her life, Emma Green had three wishes: to be a nurse, to have a family, and to travel. She achieved all three wishes.

In 1934, Emma graduated from Nursing School at Geissinger Hospital in Danville, Pennsylvania. Emma then studied radiology at Geissinger and became the first licensed x-ray technician in the hospital’s history.

Emma moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1936. She had no trouble finding a nursing position - upon hearing that Emma was both a registered nurse and a licensed X-ray technician, the Atlantic City Hospital hired her on the spot. In 1939, Emma married Martin Green, an intern at the hospital. Martin and Emma soon moved to New York City, where Martin did his residency and Emma worked for Dr. Philip Wilson, a well-known orthopedic surgeon. Emma’s children remember her telling stories of the many famous people who came through Dr. Wilson’s office, including Robert Kennedy and Marlene Dietrich.

After World War II, Emma and Martin settled back in Atlantic City, where Martin set up his pediatrics practice. It was here that they raised their two children, Frannie and Samuel. Emma returned to nursing part-time in her husband’s office after her children were grown.

Emma created a home full of love and energy, reflecting her zest for life. It was a beautiful and thoughtful home, but no space was ever off-limits to children. Emma had a passion for cooking and entertaining - family and friends remember her gourmet dishes and lovely Passover Seders. She and Martin were longtime members of Beth Judah Synagogue of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Emma loved to travel. She spent many summers abroad in Europe, immersing herself in the culture and language of each country she visited. Two of her most memorable journeys were traveling to Israel in 1958 on her own, and taking part in an archaeological dig at the ancient Spannocchia Castle outside of Florence, Italy.

Emma kept in close touch with her family and friends by writing postcards. Beginning early on with "penny postcards," Emma kept writing throughout her life, even as her health declined. She wrote with grace, detail, and wit, and her family will always treasure these beloved cards from Emma.

In 1986, Emma and Martin retired to Chapel Hill, moving to the Carolina Meadows retirement center in 1991. Emma made many good friends in Chapel Hill. Her family has wonderful memories of being together in Emma and Martin’s North Carolina home and later having family meals in the Carolina Meadows dining room. Emma was a member of a continuing watercolor class at Carolina Meadows. Old barns were her favorite subject to paint. Her work was displayed at the residents’ art gallery, and now many of her paintings hang in the homes of her dearly loved family.

Emma’s beloved husband Martin died in February of 2005. Emma and Martin’s daughter, Frannie Norma Green Lyon and her husband Martin Lyon, live in Chatham County, North Carolina. They have two sons: Adam Lyon, his wife Caryn Poll, and their daughter Pauline live in La Grange, Illinois; and Jason Lyon lives in Boston, Massachusetts. Martin and Emma have a son, Samuel Green who has three daughters: Juliet Green of Lawrence, Kansas; Sarah Green and her husband Ben Hadley of Shawnee, Kansas; and Leah Green of Phoenix, Arizona. Samuel and his wife Marilyn Thompson live in Phoenix, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Emma’s memory to "Through the Flower", 107 Becker Avenue, Belen, New Mexico, 87002. This is a foundation created by the artist Judy Chicago to preserve women’s art and history.

Condolence cards sent to Emma Green’s address at Carolina Meadows will be forwarded to the family.

Howerton & Bryan Funerl Home assisted the Green Family.
