CONROE BOYD “BUCK” BAKER, JR.
Conroe Boyd “Buck” Baker Jr., 88, of Bear Creek. died Wednesday (08-01-2012) at his home.

Funeral services were held Saturday (08-04-2012) at 11 a.m. at Tyson’s Creek Baptist Church where he was a member with Rev. Bob Wachs officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard and with graveside Masonic Rites.

A Union County native and an Army and Navy Veteran, he was the son of Conroe Boyd Baker, Sr. and Rachel Hill Baker. He was a supervisor at Western Electric and a member of Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge #0143 where he had served as a Past Master. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lucy Waldrop Baker, brother, Ira Baker, and sisters, Peggy Hester, Bobbie Turner, and Anna Belle Baker.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl B. English of Burlington; sons, Lonnie Baker of High Point, Michael Baker of Raleigh, Steven Baker of Reidsville; brother, Perry Baker of Reidsville; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two 2 step-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Tyson’s Creek Family Life Center Fund, 10891 Siler City – Glendon Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

MARY KATHERINE PAYNE
Mary Katherine Johnson Payne, 52, of Sanford died Tuesday (07-31-2012) at her home.

Funeral services were held Saturday (08-04-2012) at 3 p.m. at Meroney United Methodist Church with Pastor James Whitaker, Pastor David Kimbrell and Terry Scott officiating.

Mrs. Payne was born September 26, 1959 in Chatham County, the daughter of Mary Hazel Castevens Johnson and the late Elbert Johnson. She was preceded in death by her father and brothers, Jesse Johnson and Danny Johnson.

Survivors in addition to her mother are her husband, Robert Elbert Payne, Jr. of the home; son, Allen N. Payne of Sanford; sisters, Judy George of Pittsboro and Janice White of Salisbury.

LESLIE SAMUEL RAINEY
Mr. Leslie Samuel Rainey of Pittsboro Christian Village passed away Saturday (08-04-2012) .

A memorial service will be held at Pittsboro Christian Village Assembly on Saturday, (08-11-2012) at 2:30 p.m.

Mr. Les was born January 24, 1914 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada to the late William and Mary Rainey. He trained at Dallas Theological Seminary, The King’s College of London and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He was a missionary to Bermuda, Israel and Africa for over 50 years. In Zambia and Zimbabwe, Les wrote digests of the Scriptures which were used as texts for religious instruction classes in these countries. He was the author of a dozen books.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Margaret, John, George, Mary, David and Jean, his first wife, Audrey Butler Rainey and second wife, Anna Grace McLaren.

Surviving are sons, Jonathan David, and Daniel; daughters Sharon Scott, Karen Howell; and eleven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Pittsboro Christian Village, 1825 East St., Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation in Pittsboro.

REV. HAROLD DEAN NORRIS
Rev. Harold Dean Norris, 66, of Asheboro, died Sunday, (08-05-2012) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, (08-08-2012) at Pentecostal Victory Temple Church with Rev. Reggie Rakes officiating. Burial followed at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro.

Rev. Norris was a native of Robeson County, employed with Randolph Mills in Franklinville and a member of Pentecostal Victory Temple Church where he served as one of the ministers.

Survivors include his wife, Maggie Dowdy Norris, of the home; daughters, Teresa Johnson of Ramseur, Mary Price of Biscoe, Elizabeth Dowdy of Roanoke, Va.; son, John Dowdy of Graham; sisters, Shelby McPhail of Burlington, Frances Stewart of Asheboro, Judy Cobb of Burlington, Brenda Moody of Siler City; brothers, Charles Norris, Roger Norris, both of Asheboro, Tony Norris of Franklinville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Pentecostal Victory Temple Church Building Fund, PO Box 691, Siler City, NC 27344-0691.

RICHARD CLARK BOWERS
Richard Clark Bowers, 53, of Pittsboro, died Monday, (08-06-2012) at his residence.

The services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, (08-10-2012) from the graveside at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church cemetery with Pastor Ray Gooch presiding.

Born March 27, 1959 in Chatham County, Mr. Bowers was the son of John C. Bowers and Jane Clark Bowers. A member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, he was employed for 32 years with Buckner Steel Erection of Graham.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Jean Bradford Bowers of the home; mother, Jane C. Burke of Siler City; father, John C. Bowers of Siler City; and a half-sister, Cindy Bray of Siler City.

Friends may visit with the family in the fellowship hall following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation.

MARIAN GANOE CAMERON
Marian Ganoe Cameron, 93, died peacefully on July 21, 2012, with family at her side at Settlers’ Ridge Care Center in Celina, TX, where she had moved 2 years ago, to be near her daughter Marilyn.

Prior to moving to Texas, she and her husband Charles had lived in Pittsboro, NC since his retirement in 1981. Charles passed away in July, 2008.

Born November 26, 1918 in Turtle Creek, PA to parents Josephine (Rhule) Ganoe and Rex George Ganoe. She grew up in Johnstown, PA. A brother Rex preceded her in death in November, 1981.

Marian and Charles and their children lived for many years in Alfred Station, NY. Charles’ work then took her to Ghana, West Africa for seven years and Ethiopia for two years, then several years in Norwich and Delhi, NY. The retirement years were in Pittsboro, NC with time out for two years in Taiwan and several service trips back to Ghana – the last when she was 83 years old.

Wherever she lived, Marian was an active leader in her church and in service projects.

Surviving are a son, Charles, Jr; a daughter, Marianne; a daughter Marilyn (Maritt); a daughter Nancy; a son David; four grandsons, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cameron Gift Trust at Pittsboro Presbyterian Church, PO Box 713 Pittsboro, NC 27312 to support Marian’s favorite ministries, or to a charity of your choice.

Plans are incomplete for a simple family service with disposition of ashes.

SHELBY LEWIS “PORKY” CULBERSON
Shelby Lewis “Porky” Culberson, age 67, of 486 Jack Culberson Road, Siler City went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, August 4, 2012 in Cambridge, MD.

He was born March 13, 1945, the son of Colon Gray and Dorothy Mildred (Terry) Culberson. Porky was a native of Chatham County, an avid horseman and retired from Estes Trucking Company. Porky was a veteran of the US Navy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Faye Culberson of the home; children, Jimmy Culberson and wife Jennifer of Liberty, Tammy Culberson Nifong and husband, Todd of Winston Salem, Vickie Lynn Dunlap and husband, Tim of Carthage, Robin Tyree Peace and husband, James of Pittsboro, Kelley Tyree of Bennett, Michael Tyree of Silk Hope; siblings, Ed Culberson and wife, Linda of Siler City, Wanda Culberson Welch and husband, Mike of Carlsbad, NM.; eight precious grandchildren, Colby Shue, Carson Culberson, Codi and Cori Nifong, Christopher Johnston, Rebekah and Shelby Peace and Korbin Louie.

A memorial graveside service will be held Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 5 p.m. at the family home. Visit with the family Saturday afternoon at the home.

Memorial donations may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Building Fund, 7019 Pleasant Hill Church Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

Arrangement are being handled by Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City.

HENRY E. TURLINGTON, JR.
Henry E. Turlington, Jr., died at his home in Pittsboro on Wednesday, August 2, 2012 of pancreatic cancer. He was 67 years old.

Henry came to Chapel Hill when he was in high school, and attended the University of North Carolina. He moved to Chatham County in 1976, living on Bynum Ridge Road for many years – where he was affectionately called “the king of Bynum” by his children’s friends – and then in Pittsboro. For most of his life, Henry worked as a antiquarian bookseller. A talented writer and an avid reader, he passed on his love of books, as well as cooking and gardening, to his children.

Henry is survived by his life partner, Denise Larson; his children, Shannon and Richard Turlington; his step-children, Graylyn and Trevyn Larson; his grandchildren, Sean Molloy and Lucinda Turlington; and his siblings, John Turlington, Lynn Gardam and Carol Peters.

“How surely are the dead beyond death. Death is what the living carry with them.”

The family asks that memorial donations be made to Heads Up! Therapeutic Riding Program, PO Box 190, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

EVELYN BLACKMON OLDHAM
Evelyn Blackmon Oldham, 69, of Goldston died Wednesday, (07-25-2012) at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, (07-28-2012) at 4 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church in Gulf.

Mrs. Oldham was born in Cumberland County on August 28, 1942, the daughter of Edward and Stella (Ammons) Blackmon. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and had been employed at Kayser Roth. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas J. Oldham.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Adcock of Bear Creek, Teresa Mashburn of Goldston; son, Ricky Douglas Oldham of Bear Creek; sisters, Mary Stone of Cameron, Mae Jamerson of Sanford, Beulah Stone of Cameron; brothers, Bobby Blackmon of Siler City, Jimmy Blackmon of Cameron, Johnny Blackmon of Bear Creek, Kenny Blackmon of Tramway; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

REV. LEVIAN MARIE COBLE SILER
Levian Marie Coble Siler, 83, of Siler City died Friday (07-20-2012) .

Rev. Siler was born December 18, 1929 in Asheboro to Connie and Sally (Walker) Coble. She was a graduate of Randolph County Business School. She was called to the ministry in the Church of God of Prophecy. She served as pastor of churches in Siler City, the Price Community, Bryson City and Liberty. She also helped organize about 20 churches. She worked along side of and with her late husband, Bishop Billy Jordan Siler, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Corrina Crisco and brothers, Everett, Archibald, Connie, and Weldon Coble.

Survivors include sons, Billy Siler, Jr., Ronald Louis Siler, both of Siler City; daughter, Levian Paulette Broome of Sandy Ridge; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren

ARTHUR EUGENE (BOSE) STALEY
Arthur Eugene (Bose) Staley, 74, of Siler City, died Saturday, (07-28-2012) at the home of his daughter.

A graveside service with military rites by the Randolph Honor Guard was held Monday, (07-30-2012) at 4 p.m. at Gilmore Memorial Park, Julian.

Mr. Staley was born September 26, 1937 in Randolph County, the son of Eugene Monroe and Julia Willis Staley. Bose was a Marine veteran. He was a supervisor for Liberty Chair and retired from March Furniture in Ramseur. Arthur was preceded in death by sons, Dale and Larry Staley.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Haithcox Staley; daughter, Tammy Staley of Siler City; sisters, Irene Staley Jones of Lumber Bridge, Betty Staley Mahoney of St. Pauls; brothers, Thomas Steven Staley of East Bend, Charles Staley of Ramseur; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312

SWANNIE MASHBURN SNYDER
Swannie Mashburn Snyder, 93, of Siler City died Saturday, (07-28-2012) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, (07-30-2012) at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Snyder was born in Moore County on August 20, 1918, the daughter of John Thomas and Lula (Smith) Mashburn. She attended the First Baptist Church, Siler City and was employed as a seamstress for thirty years at A. J. Schneierson & Sons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil T. Snyder, son, Roger Snyder, daughter, Nadine Brady, and six brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her children, Earl Snyder of Greensboro, Tommy Snyder of Snow Camp, Jerry M. Snyder of Charlotte, Linda Marsh of Siler City; sister, Lucille Meggs; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
