WILLIE C. AUSTIN
Mr. Willie C. Austin, 80, of Pittsboro died Sunday (04-29-2012) at his home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday (05-02-2012) at St. Andrews Christian Church with Rev. Mary Jo Gilmore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Austin served in the U.S. Army. He was a founder of the First Baptist Missionary Church where he was a member of the deacon board, a Sunday school teacher and church treasurer.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Joe Austin of the home; children, Leon Austin, Mary Gilmore, William Austin, Curtis Austin, Laura McClamb, all of Pittsboro, Martin Austin of Smithfield, VA; and 13 grandchildren.

PHILLIP LEROY HILL
Phillip Leroy Hill, 71, of Siler City died Friday, (05-04-2012) at his home.

A memorial graveside service will be held Friday, (05-11-2012) at 11 a.m. at Hickory Mountain United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Bob Wachs officiating.

Mr. Hill was born in Chatham County, July 24, 1940, the son of Coy and Clara Lee Stout Hill Sheperd. He retired from Ramtex after 32 years of service, and was a member of Community Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Shirley O’Connor Hill.

He is survived by one daughter, Sherri Hill Ferguson of Big Spring, TX; brother, Jerry Reid Hill; and two grandsons.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home of Siler City is assisting the Hill family.

DORIS LUCILLE STUBBS
Mrs. Doris Lucille Stubbs, 98, died Saturday (05-05-2012) at Crescent Green Assisted Living Facility in Carrboro.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (05-11-2012) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. A private burial will follow at Hanks Chapel UCC Cemetery.

A native of Alamance County, Mrs. Stubbs was born September 18, 1913 to the late William Tickle and Cora Alberta Little. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Donnie Rufus Stubbs, a son, Donald Rufus Stubbs, three sisters and a brother.

Survivors include sons, William V. Stubbs of Tennessee, Allen R. Stubbs, Donald W. Stubbs, both of Pittsboro, Joseph C. Stubbs, Thomas J. Stubbs, both of Durham, Robert L. Stubbs of Lexington; 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM HUGH THORNBURG
William Hugh Thornburg, 92, of Siler City died Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.

Mr. Thornburg was born November 17, 1919, the son of Grady Lee and Lydia (Lassiter) Thornburg. He was a graduate of N.C. State University with a B. S. in Animal Husbandry, and a B. S. in Agricultural Education and completed graduate studies in Agricultural Marketing. After graduation from college, Hugh taught at Biscoe High School in Montgomery County. He then joined Allied Mill of Illinois and was affiliated with the poultry industry until his retirement from Cargill of Minnesota. He served in the Army during World War II serving combat duty in the South Pacific area. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. Hugh was a former director of the North Carolina Poultry Federation and a former director of Riverside Golf Club. Mr. Thornburg was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Tillie (Paul) Thornburg; three daughters, Cynthia T. Hughes of Siler City, Terri T. Leith and husband, Stan Fritts of Raleigh, Lois E. Thornburg and husband, Richard Chapman of Wilmington; one brother, Hoyt L. Thornburg of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two nephews.

A memorial service was held Friday, May 4, 2012 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. The family received friends Friday, May 4, 2012 following the memorial service at First United Methodist Church.

LOIS BROOKS BURKHALTER
Columbia SC – A memorial service celebrating the life of Lois Brooks Burkhalter, 89, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2012 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 4600 Daniel Drive, Columbia. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Mrs. Burkhalter died April 21, 2012 and will be remembered as a woman of great faith who possessed a creative and encouraging nature and a lively wit. She was the daughter of the late Robert Alston and Ava Edwards Brooks of Siler City, NC. She was a graduate of Pfeiffer College in NC and was a legal secretary for much of her professional career.

Lois moved to Columbia in 1960 and became very active in civic and charitable organizations, serving on numerous boards and agencies for many years. She was a published author and poet and her writing skills aided many causes. Lois was the Executive Director of the Columbia Free Medical Clinic during the critical early years of its development. She was an effective administrator and a gifted speaker who was able to raise public awareness and support for this program.

A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, she served in a variety of ways and at every level of the organizational structure from local church to S.C. and Jurisdictional Conferences. She was elected to General Conference twice. From 1977-80, she was President of S.C. Conference United Methodist Women. This was an exciting and challenging period of change for the church and this organization. Her leadership style encouraged inclusiveness among women of faith across the state. She was selected Woman of the Year at Bethel U.M.C. in 1995 and received the Herbert Hucks Award for Outstanding Service in Historical Preservation and Interpretation during the S.C. annual Conference in 2002. Her involvement in and support of U.M.W. and Church Women United continued until her death.

Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Nancy A. Burkhalter of Augusta, Ga.; son, Dr. John Brooks Burkhalter of Long Beach, Calif.; and numerous others who were nieces, nephews, “like family” and “kin of kin.” In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Reverend Clyde Brooks of S.C., Ernest Brooks of Siler City, N.C.; sister, Bettye Beeker of Greensboro and Greenville, N.C. and her former husband, Roy G. Burkhalter, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 4600 Daniel Drive, Columbia SC 29206 or a Gift in Memory given through United Methodist Women.

CHRISTOPHER DANIEL HASBROUCK
Christopher Daniel Hasbrouck died at the age of 19 on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 after a short illness in Knoxville, Tennessee.

He is survived by Amanda Hasbrouck, his younger sister, Jim Hasbrouck and Trish Hasbrouck, his parents.

Chris was a sophomore at Appalachian State University studying Computer Science. He was enrolled in the Army ROTC program and was a member of the Army National Guard based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was a graduate of Woods Charter School in Chapel Hill, NC, Class of 2010. He was a 4-year starter on the Woods Charter basketball team and later became an assistant coach. Chris had a kind heart and was well known as a leader and good friend. He will be remembered as a hero, a man that represented honor, integrity, and dignity in all that he did.

Services include a viewing on Friday May 11, 2012, 7-9 p.m. at Walker’s Funeral Home, Chapel Hill, NC. The funeral for Chris is on May 12, 2012 12 noon at New Hope Church, Durham, NC.

ALICE RIDDLE CONNER

Alice Riddle Conner, 59, of Pittsboro at the Hock Family Pavilion in Durham on Wednesday (04-25-2012) .

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday (04-28-2012) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home. Interment followed at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Conner was the daughter of the late John Dossett Riddle and Emily Bullock Riddle. She was a nurse by profession. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Chase David Hall.

Survivors include a son, Joshua Riley Dunn of Greenville; daughter, Cara Hall of Raleigh; sisters, Edna R. McNeill of Pittsboro and Jeannie R. Moody of Siler City.

CLAUDIA “RENEE” JONES MAY
Claudia “ Renee” Jones May, 54, of Ramseur passed away Saturday, (04-28-2012) .

Funeral services were held Wednesday (05-02-2012) at 3 p.m. at Bennett Baptist Church where she was a member with Rev. Tim Strider and John Wayne Phillips officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery

Ms. May was a Chatham County native and a hostess at Captain Tom’s. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Eldon Jones.

Ms. May is survived by a son, Christopher Lee Wallace of Ramseur; daughter, Jennifer May of Sanford; mother, Lena Craven Jones of Bennett; brothers, Rick Jones of New Orleans, LA, Jeff Jones of Sanford, and Buddy Jones of Greensboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Bennett Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 91, Bennett, NC 27208.

Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett is serving the May family.

CLYDE REID PERRY, SR.
Clyde Reid Perry, Sr., died Thursday, April 26, 2012 at his home, surrounded by family members.

He was born October 31, 1925 in the Silk Hope Community and spent his entire life there except the two years he served in Europe during World War II. He attended Silk Hope High School and Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, and after his marriage, he attended The Siler City Chapel.

He owned and operated C. R. Perry Poultry Co., Inc. and had business interests in a hatchery, feed mill and processing plant. He was one of the founders of the Silk Hope Volunteer Fire Department and served as the first Fire Chief for many years. He was a member of the Silk Hope Ruritans and was active in the Old Fashion Farmers Day Celebration each Labor Day weekend, where he could always be seen serving homemade ice cream and chatting with friends as they stopped by.

He enjoyed time at Badin Lake, boating, skiing and in later life, watching his beloved grandchildren enjoy the water.

Mr. Perry was predeceased by his parents, Aycock and Annie Smith Perry; and sisters, Marlene P. Davis and Ruth P. Minor.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elaine Hancock Perry; one son, Clyde Reid Perry, Jr. (Chip) and wife, Diane; grandchildren, Clyde Reid Perry, III (Chip), Casey Perry, Jamie Smith and husband, Joey; sister, Joyce P. Clark of Greensboro, brother-in-law, H. A. Davis and a special friend, Mary Lee Moore.

The family received friends Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Sunday, April 29 at 3 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Those conducting the service were Dr. Tommy Steele, Rev. Brian Wellborn and Rev. Steve Stutts. Serving as pallbearers were nephews and neighbors.

FRANCES ELKINS LANGLEY
Mrs. Frances Elkins Langley, 83, of Pittsboro died Sunday, April 29, 2012 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Born in Chatham County September 9, 1928, Mrs. Langley was the daughter of Tatum and Alma Joy Lambert Elkins. She was retired from management in the hotel business. She loved her family, her dogs, cats, fish, and enjoyed flowers and gardening as well as fishing at the Outer Banks. She was a very good cook, often preparing fried chicken, country style steak or French fries – a treat that her children would often bring their friends over to enjoy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Langley was preceded in death by a brother, Ted Elkins.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Allen Langley; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Ken Green of Pittsboro; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Robin Langley of Knightdale, Greg and Janet Langley of Sanford, Timmy and Lisa Langley of Pittsboro; grandchildren, John Langley, Raven Langley and Kenley Green; brothers, Jack Elkins of Siler City, Jim Elkins of Virginia; sisters, Margaret Vadersen of Virginia, Mary Cheek of Greensboro, and Flo Turner of Siler City.

The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Langley will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ, where she was member, with Rev. Bob Wachs presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends visited with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hall – Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro, and other times at the home.

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be sent to Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ, PO Box 366, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Arrangements for Mrs. Langley are under the care of Hall – Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

RAYMOND JOHN BALDAUF
Raymond John Baldauf, age 70, died on Saturday, April 28, 2012, in the home he and his wife Nan built together. Ray died after several years of living with prostate cancer.

Ray was born on December 8, 1941, in Painesville, OH, to the late Clarence and Mary Baldauf. He was predeceased by his brothers Clarence and Richard.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Nanette: his brothers, William, Benjamin, Bruce, and Stephen; his sisters, Esther Underwood, Mary Prise, Rose Moore, and Ruth Ann Yokie; his 15 nieces and nephews; and his 13 great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the home on Saturday, May 5, at noon. Flowers will be graciously accepted. Contributions may be sent to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Many thanks to all of Ray’s friends and family for their support, with special thanks to Ben, Lisa, Ken, Bronwyn, Anne and The Knitters.

Ray ran a good race.

KENNETH B. MASON, JR.
Kenneth B. Mason, Jr., 78, of Fearrington Village, passed away Thursday, (04-19-2012) at his home.

A celebration of Ken’s life was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, (04-24-2012), at The Chapel of the Cross.

Survivors include his wife, Mimsy; son, Kenneth Mason III of Valrico, FL; daughter, Marteena Mason, of Marlborough, MA; and two grandchildren. Ken was predeceased by his first wife, Carol Adelaide Smith.

A celebration of Ken’s life was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, (04-24-2012), at The Chapel of the Cross.
