GERTRUDE JOHNSON SEYMOUR
Mrs. Gertrude Johnson Seymour, 89, of Pittsboro passed away Friday (04-20-2012), at The Laurels of Chatham.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday (03-24-2012) at Pittsboro Baptist Church with Dr. Tripp Harmon officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

A Chatham County native, Gertrude was born to the late Allie A. Johnson and Ada Horton Johnson on January 16, 1923. She was a member of the Jubilee Choir, and a regular member of the church choir for over 50 years. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Milton Seymour and her brother, Percy Johnson.

Survivors include a son, Andy Seymour of Sanford; daughter, Cindy Haynes of Pittsboro; sister, Betty Lou Ferrell, of Morrisville; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to The Willing Workers Sunday School Class or the music ministry of Pittsboro Baptist Church, PO Box 696, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

MELVIN RAY ROGERS
Mr. Melvin Ray Rogers, 64, of Raleigh died Monday (04-16-2012) at his home.

Memorial services were held Monday (04-23-2012) at 12 p.m. at Christian Faith Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. David C. Forbes Sr. officiating.

Mr. Rogers was a member of Christian Faith Baptist Church where he was a member of the men’s ministry and usher board. He had worked at Chatham Mills.

Surviving is one son, Melvin Ray Rogers, Jr. of Raleigh.

JOSEPH L. REAVES
Mr. Joseph L. Reaves, 85, of Bear Creek died Monday (04-09-2012) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, (04-14-2012) at Alston Chapel Church with Elder Jerry Powell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

A member of Alston Chapel Church, he retired from UNC Hospital, and was a member of St. Mark Community Lodge #829 DHA.

Survivors include daughters, Jo Ann Alston of Pittsboro, Judy Reaves of Bear Creek; son, Haywood Reaves of Siler City; brothers, Johnnie Peoples of Bear Creek, Nathaniel Reaves, George Reaves, Walter Reaves, all of Pittsboro; sisters, Mozelle Brim, Lillie Blue, both of Pittsboro, Hattie Wadell of Teaneck, NJ; and four grandchildren.

MERRITT YOUNG WILSON, JR.
Merritt Y. Wilson, Jr. of Pittsboro, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on April 18, 2012. He was born August 17, 1922 in Orange County, NC to the late Merritt Y. Wilson, Sr. and Macy Suggs Wilson. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Doris Browning Wilson.

He leaves behind a loving family. His three children are Johnny Wilson and wife Brenda of Pittsboro, Maycie W. Lloyd and husband Lynn of Graham and Tonya W. Thompson and husband Lee of Pittsboro. He will be fondly remembered by his six grandchildren, Tiffany W. Hancock and husband Bill, John L. Wilson and wife Heather, Wilson C. Lloyd and wife Adrienne of Phoenix, AZ, Clint Lloyd and his wife Lina of New York, NY, Justus Thompson and Joshua Thompson.

He enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren, Robert Wheeler, Andrew Wheeler, John L Wilson Jr., Kelly Wilson, Eve Lloyd and he anticipated the May arrivals of two new great-granddaughters, Addison Lloyd and Lora Wilson.

Merritt Wilson was a WW II veteran spending five years in the navy with the last three years in the Pacific arena. In the fall of 2011 he went on the 100th Flight of Honor for WW II vets to the WW II Memorial in Washington, DC.

He graduated from High Point College and then earned his Masters Degree in Education Administration from Peabody College (Vanderbilt) in Tennessee. He later earned an Advanced Superintendent Degree from U.N.C. at Chapel Hill. He worked in the following schools systems: Greensboro City, Burlington City, Greene County, Alamance County and Chatham County.

He retired in 1983 from Chatham County Schools as an Associate Superintendent where he was in charge of personnel and vocational education. He was proud of his efforts to bring quality vocational programs to the Chatham county schools. His efforts helped Chatham Central High School become a leader in the country in horticulture education.

Merritt was active in his church and community serving as a Sunday school teacher at Pittsboro United Methodist Church and enjoyed his work with the Pittsboro Lions Club. He was a forty-year member of the Masons. He was a member of the First United Church of Graham from 1962-67. He was recently residing at Twin Rivers Independent Living Facility in Pittsboro.

The service to celebrate the life of Mr. Merritt Wilson was held at 4 o’clock Monday afternoon, April 23, 2012, at Pittsboro United Methodist Church, with Pastor Ben Alexander presiding. Interment followed at 6:30 p.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in McLeansville. Friends visited with the family on Friday evening, April 20, 2012 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

Memorials may be made to the Wilson Educational Scholarship Fund or to the church, Wilson Scholarship Fund, Maycie W. Lloyd, 535 Moores Chapel Cem. Rd., Graham, NC 27312.

Arrangements for Mr. Wilson were under the care of Hall – Wynne funeral service of Pittsboro.

SARA FOUST SMITH
Sara Foust Smith, 83, of 155 S. S. Edwards Road, Siler City and for the past two years at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation Center, died Friday, April 20, 2012.

Mrs. Smith was born in Chatham County on May 10, 1928 the daughter of Eugene H. and Arabella Stroud Foust. Sara was a nurse assistant at Chatham Hospital and Brian Center and did home duty for the elderly. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Church. Sara loved her family and was an avid reader. She is preceded in death by her husband, Max B. Smith, Sr., brothers, Charles, Jack and Ben Foust.

She is survived by a daughter, Jean Harris Smith Carroll and Bob Robinson of Raleigh, NC; a son, Max B. Smith, Jr. and wife, Diane of Bear Creek; brother, Gene H. Foust, Jr. of Asheboro; granddaughters, Emily S. Moran and husband, John of Davidson; Maggie Beth Smith of Bear Creek; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Riley, and Tilly Moran, and Parker Everhart.

The family received friends Sunday, April 22, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City and other times at the home of Max and Diane Smith, 648 Jim Paige Road, Bear Creek, NC.

A memorial service was held Monday, April 23, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Church, 1225 Mt. Vernon Springs Road, Siler City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P O Box 752, Siler City, NC 27344; Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 East Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344 or to West Chatham County Food Pantry, 126 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Siler City Care and Rehabilitation Center, Community Home Care and Hospice, Siler City Dialysis Center, and Dr. Hoffman and Peggy Brewer.

COLON LEE BROWN
Colon Lee Brown, 85, of Siler City passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at his home.

He was a retired Chief Petty Officer with the US Navy with 22 years of service, a member of the “Fighting SeaBees”, a veteran of WW II, the Korean War and Vietnam.

A memorial service with full military honors was held Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Loflin Funeral Home Chapel. The family received friends following the service at the home.

He was the son of the late Edward and Ethel Rickman Brown. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary “Sue” Williams Brown, three sisters and one brother.

Surviving is his wife, Barbara Brown; one son, three daughters, two step-sons, four sisters, six brothers and many grandchildren.

At the family’s request, please do not send flowers. Instead, please make a donation to Presbyterian Homes and Family Services, Memo: Zuni-Camp House, 5279 Homegrown Lane, Zuni, VA 23898.

GEORGE LEROY HUEY
George Leroy Huey, 75, formerly of Siler City passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012 in Lynchburg, TN.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Huey of Lynch-burg, TN; two daughters, Gloria Lambeth of Pleasant Garden, Vicky Spiller of Richmond, VA; two granddaughters, Katie Oglesby of Richmond, VA, Janice Robbins of Ramseur; one great-granddaughter, Madison Robbins; three stepchildren of Lynchburg, TN; two brothers, Howard and Fred Huey; four sisters, Florence Platt, Donna Shumaker, Mariam Henry, and Judy Hollopeters of Pennsylvania.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 20. 2012 in Tullahomo, TN.

HAZEL BROOKS DIXON
Mrs. Hazel Brooks Dixon, 84, of Sanford, died Tuesday, (04-10-2012) at the home of her son.

A graveside service was held Thursday, (04-12-2012) at 2 p.m. at Lee Memory Gardens with Ray Parish officiating.

Hazel was born in Chatham County on October 10, 1928. She was a member of Jonesboro Methodist Church, and was employed for several years with the Lee County School System. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. J. Dixon; parents, Charlie and Pearl Brooks; and a sister, Jo Ann Kirkman.

She is survived by her son, David Brooks Dixon; daughter, Martha Clark; sister, Frances Williams; brother, Charles Brooks; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice of Erwin, NC.

MILTON NANCE, JR.
Milton Nance, Jr., 62, of Liberty passed away Friday (04-13-2012) at his home.

A graveside funeral service was held Wednesday (04-18-2012) at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Bob Wachs officiating.

Mr. Nance was a Randolph County native and owned and operated Nance Automotive Inc. in Siler City. He also taught small engine repair at Randolph Community College in Asheboro. Mr. Nance was preceded in death by his parents, Milton Nance, Sr. and Delphie Bowman Nance, and his wife, Diane Hefner Nance.

Survivors include sisters, Jean Weil of Lanesville, Ind., Joan Marie Harris of Siler City, and Jan Laurel Nance of Leland.

EVA JEAN McINTOSH
Eva Jean McIntosh, 77, of Pittsboro died Thursday (03-29-2012).

Funeral services were held Tuesday (04-03-2012) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home with burial in Pittsboro Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Bulloch County, GA, she retired from UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, and was a member of Pittsboro Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee McIntosh, Sr.

Survivors include sons, Harry McIntosh, Jr. of Naalehu, Hawaii, Alan McIntosh of Apex; daughters, Ellen Hamm and Lisa Perry, both of Pittsboro, Joni Williams of Moncure, sister, Virginia Dow of Spokane, WA; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

MICHAEL RAY HARTSELL
Michael Ray Hartsell 49, of Seagrove, passed away Friday (04-13-2012) at Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.

Funeral services were held Sunday (04-15-2012) at 3 pm at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Cooper, Rev. David Davis, and Dr. Neal Jackson. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hartsell was a Moore County native and had worked at Burlington Industries. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Buie Hartsell.

Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Hartsell Hussey of Robbins; son, Collin Ray Hartsell of the home; father and step-mother, Albert and Mary Hartsell of Robbins; mother, Georgia Ritter Layne of Carthage; sisters, Debbie Hartsell of Carthage, Tina Spivey of Robbins; and one granddaughter.

LOUISE OWENS ROBERSON
Mrs. Louise Owens Roberson, 84, formerly of Pittsboro, died Saturday, (04-14-2012) at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, (04-17-2012) at Chatham United Methodist Church with Reverends Patrick Sinclair, Ray Gooch and Bob Wachs presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Roberson was born in Randolph County on March 12, 1928, the daughter of Jonah Franklin Owens and Myrtis Williamson Owens. She worked for Siler City Manufacturing Company. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett M. Roberson, and five brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Roberson of the home; sons, James Roberson of Pittsboro, David Roberson of New Hill; brother, Paul Owen of Allentown, PA; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

MARTHA STONE LILLY
Martha Lee Stone Lilly, 66, of Siler City died Sunday, (04-15-2012) at Wesley Long Community Hospital in Greensboro.

A graveside service was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Larry Henderson officiating.

Mrs. Lilly was born in Chatham County on May 16, 1945, the daughter of Hubert “Sug” R. and Wanda (Chriscoe) Stone. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and had been a nursing supervisor at Siler City Care & Rehab. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lilly.

Survivors include sons, Stephen L. Lilly, David R. Lilly, both of Siler City; brother, Gary Stone of Altamonte Springs, FL; one granddaughter; three step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.

The family requests no flowers but memorials may be made to West Chatham Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.
