MARGIE YATES McGHEE

Margie Yates McGhee, 90, formerly of Graham, died Thursday (06-30-2011) at Careview Rest Home in Snow Camp.

Survivors include her daughter, Wanda Kimball; son, Ronald McGhee; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.D. McGhee, parents, Tom and Lillie Yates and a granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday at McClure Funeral Home in Graham. Funeral services will begin at 2 in the McClure Chapel. Burial will follow in Graham Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Careview Rest Home, 2701 Moon Lindley Road, Snow Camp NC 27349; or Community Hospice, 1414 East 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

PAUL E. MARTIN

Paul Edward Martin, 59, of Liberty, died Tuesday, (06-28-2011), at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, (06-30-2011) at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jeff Looney officiating.

A native of Chatham County, Mr. Martin was born October 29, 1951. He was the son of the late Elmer White Martin and Maudie Brower Martin. He was a dairy farmer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lando Castevens.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Martin, of the home; daughters, Julie Martin, Jennifer Martinez, Kathy Carlton, Sandra Carlton; brother, Morgan Castevens; sisters, Jenny Hayes, Hazel Johnson, Kathelene White; Maria Martin, Ethelene DiGregorio; nine grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.

MARY HARDIN EUBANKS

Mrs. Mary Hardin Eubanks, 83, died Saturday (07-02-2011) at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hall – Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro, with interment to follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 10 – 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born November 21, 1927 in Greenville, SC, Mrs. Eubanks was the daughter of Leroy and Pearl Hartsell Hardin. She worked for a number of years at Christian Print Company in Durham before retiring. She attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church as well as Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by a son, Charles Reese.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Wimberly Clark of Pittsboro; sons, Jim Rochelle of Durham, Paul Wimberly of Pittsboro; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Eubanks of Morehead City.

BARRY RHODES

Barry Jordan Rhodes, 59, of Siler City, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on June 28, 2011 after a long, brave struggle with cancer. He was at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Barry was born July 10, 1951 in Washington, Georgia. When he was seven years old, his parents and baby brother were killed in a plane crash. He then went to live with his grandparents in Denton, Maryland, graduating from North Caroline High School in June of 1969.

He moved to Siler City in 1971 after he returned home from the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from the United States Army. He owned and operated Barry Rhodes Plumbing for over 31 years.

Barry was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church where he was current Lay Leader, a member of the choir, former worship leader, former chairman of the Council, Fellowship Class Sunday School teacher, served on various committees and always had lead roles in musical programs and drama productions of the church. He also headed up the annual Piney Grove Harvest Festival each year in November.

Barry was a beloved husband, Daddy, Papa, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle and father-in-law. He will be so missed.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, Clem and Evelyn Rhodes and brother, Jeff, grandparents, T. J. and Florrie Bonner and Joe and Marie Rhodes.

He is survived by his loving wife, Geraldine; his precious son and daughter, Dustin Rhodes and wife, Stacey, Kami Long and husband, Robbie and the lights of his life, his grandchildren, Eve Long and Davis Rhodes. Also surviving are his sister, Bonnie Ferguson of Newman, Georgia; niece, Kim Johnson and husband, Kevin of Raleigh; nephews, Kevin Williams and wife, Nikki of South Carolina, and Chris Williams serving in Afghanistan, three great-nephews, Christopher, Cameron and Nolan Williams; two aunts, Wilma Jones of Crawfordville, Georgia and Martha Passwaters of Denton, Maryland.

Survivors also include his loving mother and father-in-law, Joe and Mildred Culberson of Siler City; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Jimmy Marsh; nephews, Charlie Marsh and wife, Kim, Brad Marsh and girlfriend, Kristy Young; special great-nephews, Bryce and Blake Marsh.

The family received friends and family Thursday evening, June 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the sanctuary of Piney Grove United Methodist Church and other times at his home at 4606 Siler City-Snow Camp Road.

The funeral was held Friday, July 1 at 2:30 p.m. at Piney Grove with Rev. Hank Sanders and Rev. Herbert Lowry officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

He loved flowers but donations may also be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or an account has been set up in trust for his precious grandchildren at Fidelity Bank, 1426 East 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home assisted the family.

BETTY LOUIN THOMAS JONES

Betty Louin Thomas Jones, 77, of Pittsboro, died June 29, 2011 at her residence.

Betty Lou was born in Chatham County, NC on December 25, 1934 to Louin Edward and Clara Taylor Thomas. She attended school here and graduated from Pittsboro High School in 1953. She later attended the Watts School of Nursing. Mrs. Jones was employed by Central Carolina Bank for 34 years.

Betty Lou enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and her four girls, often delegating gardening responsibilities. She also liked gathering with her classmates from the PHS Class of 1953, dining out, and watching Carolina games. She enjoyed traveling and had spent time in destinations such as Paris, Hawaii, London, and Canada. As a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Betty Lou enjoyed serving in the choir, as a Sunday School teacher, treasurer, and various other capacities.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her daughters Joan Nipper and husband Rusty, Lisa Hudson and husband, TC, Beth McLaurin and husband, David, Debbie Morris and husband, Randy, all of Pittsboro; a brother, Charles Thomas of Pittsboro; two sisters, Clarine Thomas of Pittsboro, Anne Pitts of Elon; seven grandchildren, Tiffany and Derrick Nipper, Bethany, Cole, and Katie Hudson, and Stephen and Thomas Gerringer.

Friends visited with the family from 6-8 p.m. Friday night at the funeral home. The funeral service for Mrs. Jones was held at 11 a.m.Saturday, July 2 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Robinson, Rev. Wesley Thomas, and Rev. Fred Senter officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were under. the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service, Pittsboro.

ANNE GREGORY BUNCE

Anne Gregory Bunce, 93, died at home at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill, Saturday (06-18-2011).

A memorial service was held Friday, (06-24-2011) at 2 p.m. in the Carolina Meadows Auditorium.

She was born in Syracuse, NY in July 1917 to George Groot Gregory and Clara Hale Gregory, M.D. A graduate of Fayetteville High School, she attended Radcliffe (Harvard University) and graduated from Syracuse University.

She is survived by her husband, Paul L. Bunce, M.D., brother, David Hale Gregory; son, Gregory P. Bunce; daughter, Leslie A. Bunce, M.D. and six grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina or a charity of one’s choice.

RICHARD WALLS, SR.

Richard Walls, Sr, died Tuesday, (06-20-2011) in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Funeral services were held on Friday, (06-24-2011) at 11 a.m. at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home in Florida. A graveside committal service was held Sunday, (06-26-2011) at 2:30 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church in Bear Creek.

Mr. Walls was born February 15, 1927 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He worked in the aerospace industry for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Iola Pilkington Walls; children, Richard Walls, Jr., Deniese Billings, Debbie Dowds; and one grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Florida.

JANET MARIE WILSON

Mrs. Janet Marie Wilson, 56, of Moncure died Monday (06-20-2011) at U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held Friday (06-24-2011) at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. George Headen officiating. Burial followed at Liberty Chapel Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Chatham County and was a member of Liberty Chapel Church. She graduated from Horton High School and was employed with Allied Signal and U.N.C. Hospital.

Survivors include a daughter, Semorie Headen of the home; sisters, Bertha Seymore of Sanford, Ann T. Trapp of the home; brother, Johnny Wilson, of the home; and two granddaughters.

HELEN “COOKIE” BAKER

Mrs. Helen Mae Ihle “Cookie” Baker, 66, of Moncure, died Saturday (06-25-2011) at her home.

The funeral and burial will be held at a later date in Centreville, MD.

Born in Baltimore, MD May 16, 1945, Cookie was the daughter of Albert F. Ihle and Henrietta Schafer Ihle. She was employed by Lowe’s Foods and later owned and operated Cookie’s Business Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters.

Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband, William D. “Bill” Baker; brother, Robert Ihle of Grasonville, MD; sister, Ethel Collier of Chestertown, MD.

Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

ETTORE ANTHONY “Tony” DeVITO

Ettore Anthony (Tony) DeVito died Sunday, (06-26-2011).

Graveside service will be held at Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City, at 10 a.m. Thursday (06-30-2011)).

Mr. DeVito was born November 14, 1934 in Brooklyn NY. He served in the U.S. Army. He had been a carpenter, owner of an art gallery, a New York City cab driver, a professional photographer, and the head caretaker of Surprise Lake Camp..

Survivors include his children, Torre and Laura DeVito; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Madeline DeVito, brother Nicholas DeVito, and his wife, Marjorie DeVito.

In lieu of flowers, consider donations to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Foundation.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall - Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

BERTHA W. COBLE

Bertha W. Coble, 90, of Bennett died Wednesday (06-22-2011) at her home.

Funeral services were held Saturday (06-26-2011) at 4 p.m. at Glovers United Church of Christ, with Pastor Larry Smith and Rev. Julie McLean officiating.

Mrs. Coble was a native of Randolph County, a member of Glovers United Church of Christ and a former employee of Mid-State Farms.

Survivors include daughters, Helen Walden Spinks of the home, Bessie McMillian of Asheboro, Ethel W. Foxx of Siler City; son, Joseph Herman Walden of the home; sister, Mary Caviness Eubanks of Greensboro; step-daughter, Sandra Coble Green of Coleridge; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grand-children.
