LARRY GUNTER
Larry Gunter, formerly of Sanford, died Sunday (10-27-2013) in Wilmington.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

GERTHA LANE JOYCE
Gertha Lane Joyce, 87 of Bonlee-Bennett Road, Siler City died Monday, October 28, 2013 at Manor Care Health Services, Pinehurst.

Mrs. Joyce was born on December 22, 1925 in Lee County, the daughter of William Henry and Blanche (Hilliard) Lane. Gertha was a homemaker and member of Edward Hill Friends Meeting, the Senior Sunday School class and sang in the choir. She enjoyed reading, cooking, listening to music, dancing, shopping and volunteering at Bonlee School. She loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Walter Odell Joyce, son, Jerry Mack Joyce, sister, Eunice White and son-in-law, Benny Craven.

She is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Joyce Craven of Sumter, SC, Sandy Joyce Merritt and husband, Robert of Elizabethtown; two sons, Rodger Joyce and wife, Jill of Greensboro, Ronald O. Joyce and wife, Shelly of Bear Creek; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, October 30, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. At other times the family will be at the home of Ronnie Joyce, 145 CC Routh Road, Bear Creek, NC. The funeral followed Wednesday at 12 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home with Josh Conrad officiating. Burial was in Edward Hill Friends Meeting Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Edward Hill Friends Meeting Cemetery Fund, 92 Ed Leonard Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the Joyce Family.

THOMAS “TOMMY” WAYNE SMITH
Thomas “Tommy” Wayne Smith, 69, of Siler City died Wednesday, (10-16-2013).

A graveside service was held Saturday, (10-19-2013) at 3 p.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, with Rev. Jim Whittaker officiating.

Mr. Smith was born in Randolph County on August 12, 1944, the son of Glenn Thomas and Hazel (Black) Smith. He retired from Mountaire Farms. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Brenda (Bell) Smith; and sisters, Brenda Albright and Glenda Smith, both of Liberty.

Memorials may be made to West End United Methodist Church, P O Box 1017, Siler City, NC 27344 or to a church of your choice.

JOLENE COOK BRAY
Jolene “Jo” Cook Bray of Elon, died Tuesday, (10-15-2013 at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.

Funeral services were held at First Christian United Church of Christ, Saturday, (10-19-2013) at 1 p.m. by the Reverend Mark Pickett. The entombment followed at the Union Ridge Church Cemetery in the Bray Family Mausoleum.

WILLIE EUGENE ELLIS
Mr. Willie Eugene Ellis, 87, formerly of Sanford died Wednesday, (10-16-2013) at The Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, (10-19-2013) from Hickory Mountain United Methodist Church with Reverend Mary Ellen Bender and Reverend Ray Gooch presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ellis was born in Chatham County on April 9, 1926, to John and Edna Johnson Ellis. He retired from Federal Paperboard Company (now International Paper). He than worked part-time for Hardees. He was a member of Hickory Mountain United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ozzie Jones Ellis, a son, James Eugene Ellis, and five sisters and brothers.

Survivors include his daughter, Brenda Beal of Sanford; sons, Thomas Ellis of Bear Creek, Luke Ellis of Siler City; sisters, Fay Tisdale of Siler City, Ann Ring of Greensboro; brothers, James Ellis and Grady Ellis, both of Sanford, Burnice Ellis of Bynum; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

EDNA MAE CRUMP
Edna Mae Crump, 77, of Siler City died Monday, (10-14-2013) at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

Funeral services were held Saturday (10-19-2013) at 2 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Gray and Rev. David Scott on officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mrs. Crump was a native of Alamance County and a retired employee of Townsend Poultry. She was a member of Harris Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir, Deep River Association and the Prayer Warriors. She was preceded in death by sisters, Ruby Alston and Emma Alston.

Survivors include her husband, Russell Crump; sons, Robert Alston of Augusta, GA, David McSwain of Pittsboro, Richard McSwain, Earl McSwain, both of Siler City; daughters, Jeanette Alston, Geraldine Davis, both of Siler City, Faydene McSwain of Chapel Hill; sisters, Annie Lee Alston of Jamaica, NY; brothers, Jesse L. Alston of Asheboro, Gradie Alston, Otis Alston, both of NY; 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

STEPHEN CLIFFORD “STEVE” WHITE, JR.
Stephen Clifford “Steve” White, Jr., 67, passed away Monday (10-21-2013) at the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be held Friday (10-25-2013) at 11 a.m. at Culpeper U.M.C., 1233 Oak Lawn Drive, Culpeper, VA27701. Burial will follow Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Reva, VA, 6262 Hover Road, Reva, VA

Steve was born in Warrenton, Virginia on March 14, 1946 to Stephen Clifford White, Sr. and Lillian Hixson White Dixon. Both his parents and his sister, Marie White Tinsley, preceded him in death. He attended Culpeper County High School. Steve’s career included managing plant floors and job sites and later, he was a bridge inspector with the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Broyles White; son, Stephen Craig Broyles White of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughter, Wendy White Lybrand of Chapel Hill; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, (10-24-2013) at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA from 5 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the NC Jaycee Burn Center.

MARGARET ANNA GEOGHEGAN
Margaret Anna Geoghegan, age 92, passed away at her home in Pittsboro, North Carolina after a brief illness on October 12.

Born April 26, 1921 to John and Margaret Chittick, of Philadelphia, PA, Marge was the last surviving member of the Chittick household, her brother John and sister Jean, having passed away before her.

Marge spent many of her happiest years at her Weston, Connecticut home where she lived for more than three decades. A graduate of Columbia University in New York City, she received a Masters of Social Work degree at the age of 56 and was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Bridgeport. Marge worked at Hall-Brooke Hospital in Westport, CT and the Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT before establishing her own successful family therapy practice. She retired in 1995 to Fearrington Village in Pittsboro, NC where she made many deep and lasting friendships and was known for being a passionate bridge and tennis player, beach lover, knitter, excellent hostess and gardener, and an inveterate New York Times crossword puzzle enthusiast.

Marge leaves behind four children: Michael of Chocowinity, NC; Peter of Bridgeport, CT; Maggie of Woodside, CA; and John of San Francisco, CA; and six grandchildren. Her former husband, John J. Geoghegan, Jr., to whom she was married for 32 years, predeceased her.

Marge was attended in her final hours by her loving daughter, Maggie, her granddaughter Kate, and her close friend, Neil Flynt.

Memorial service arrangements will be announced at a later date.

JEWEL ELIZABETH HARRIS
Jewel Elizabeth Harris, 95, of Siler City, died Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Siler City Center. She was formerly of3 68 Clyde Underwood Road, Siler City.

Miss Harris was born in Chatham County on December 3, 1917, the daughter of Dewitt and Letita (Woody) Harris. Jewel was the oldest lifetime member of Plainfield Friends Meeting and was a poultry grower for Gold Kist. She had a love for being outdoors, gardening and yard work. She was an expert seamstress and dress maker, making clothes for her family and friends.

Jewel was preceded in death by sisters, Daisy Smith, Maude Kimrey, Ollie Pike, Hilda Staley; brothers, John Wesley, Dewey, Jack, and Hughes Harris.

She is survived by one sister, Mary Gertrude Ray of Siler City; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral followed at 2 p.m. with Lee Lane and Larry MacIntrye officiating. Burial was in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Cemetery, Silk Hope.

KATHLEEN HARRIS BROWER
Kathleen Harris Brower was born March 30, 1919, in Chatham County, North Carolina, to the late Nanie Harris. She departed this life on October 19, 2013 at Genesis Rehabilitation Center, Siler City.

Kathleen was the widow of the late Henry Oscar Brower. She worked for many years at Brewers Laundry until her retirement. In 1982, Kathleen moved from Bonlee to Siler City, where she remained until her passing. She was a devoted member of Harris Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She is remembered for her devotion to family and friends, consistent even temperament, delightful sense of humor, kindness to others and her faith in God. Kathleen was preceded in death by two sisters, Nanie Williams, Cassie Jackson; one brother, Charlie Harris; and one niece, Johnsie Jackson Lowrance.

She leaves to cherish her memory a great-niece, Frances Jean Guertin (Terry); three great-nephews, James Edward Jackson, Sr. (Anita), Henry Grady Jackson (Deborah), William Reid Jackson; two dear friends, Martha Peoples, Lillie Mae Siler; and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be held Saturday, October 26, 2013, with viewing at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m., at Harris Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Highway 64 East, Siler City. Interment will follow at Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

Arrangements by Knotts and Son, 1501 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Siler City.

ALICE GRAY MOLONY
Alice Gray Molony, 81, of Chatham County passed away peacefully in her home on October 18, 2013.

She was born in Chapel Hill on November 20, 1932. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Francis Molony; her parents, Marree Sumerland Hicks, Clifton Stroud; sister, Annie Blue; and son, Korey Dennis Arnold.

She is survived by her two children, Merwin Arnold and Marla Montoya; six sisters and one brother; two grandchildren, four great grandchildren. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

HELEN SHEPHERD WEBSTER
Helen Shepherd Webster, 87, of Siler City died Monday, October 21, 2013 at Siler City Care.

Mrs. Webster was born in Randolph County on November 15, 1925, the daughter of James and Bessie (Coble) Shepherd. She retired from Glendale Hosiery as a seamstress. Helen was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Esther Sunday School Class, Joy In The Morning Senior Citizens Group and the Highfill Circle. She enjoyed sewing in her free time. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Reid Webster.

She is survived by one daughter, Judy W. York and husband Ritchie of Liberty; son, Jerry R. Webster of Burlington; grandchildren, Tammy, Kelli, Blake and Jay; great-grandchildren, Khloe and Skyler; best friends, Gladys Fesmire, Mary Lois Clark and Bonnie Davis.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

A graveside service will follow Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Hickory Mountain Baptist Church, 1094 Mt. Vernon-Hickory Mountain Road, Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Ave., Siler City, NC 27344or Community Home Care & Hospice, 108 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

AILEEN GREESON JONES
Aileen Greeson Jones of Siler City died Friday, (10-11-2013) at Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell.

The funeral was held Sunday, (10-10-2013) at 4 p.m.at Coble Lutheran Church with Rev. Clyde Denny, Rev. David Neff and Rev. Joseph Miller officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Aileen was born in Guilford County on April 15, 1924, the daughter of James and Minnie Holt Greeson. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Siler City where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and served on the bereavement committee. During WWII she was a telephone operator. Aileen was a member of the Siler City Squares and had been a supervisor for J. P. Stevens. Aileen was preceded in death by her husband, J. Samuel Jones; her parents; sisters and brothers, Frances Sharpe, Jeanette Ingle, Ceola Elliott, James Wade and Kirby Greeson.
Survivors include sisters, Betty G. Keck of Julian, and Hilda G. Humble of Kimesville.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P O Box 212, Siler City, NC 27344; Coble Lutheran Church; or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

KENT WILSON COOPER
Kent Wilson Cooper, 61, died Wednesday, (10-09-2013) at his residence in Pittsboro.

The Celebration of Life services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, (10-13-2013) from Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Pastors Dan Robinson, Ray Gooch and Wesley Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Bynum Cemetery.

Kent was born in Durham County, October 4, 1952, the son of Kenneth Wilson Cooper and Wynell Stout Cooper. A lifelong resident of Chatham County, Kent graduated from Pittsboro High School and Catawba College. Kent worked in the family business, the Ford Dealership in Pittsboro, where he was in sales.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Allred Cooper; son, Michael Cooper; sisters, Jennifer Bouldin and Penny Boone, all of Pittsboro.

Memorials may be directed to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

BETTY PERRY LUXTON
Betty Perry Luxton, 80, of Sanford, died Monday (10-14-2013) at her home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday (10-17-2013) at 2 p.m. at Lee’s Chapel Christian Church with Rev. Bruce Parsons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Luxton was born September 30, 1933, the daughter of the late Frank Perry and Columba Carter Perry. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hayden Leo Luxton; and siblings Velma Edmonds, Rosco Alford, Teat Alford, H.B. Alford, Herbert Alford, Nallie Alford, Brodie Perry and Bobby Perry.

Survivors include daughters, Alicia “Lisa” Martin, Renee L. Cotton, both of Sanford; son, Hayden Perry Luxton of Sanford; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Lee’s Chapel Church, and immediately following in the church fellowship hall.
