LEOLA MOON

Leola Marie Moon, 95, of 9054 Devils Tramping Ground Road, Bear Creek, died Saturday, November 20, 2010 at Oak Haven Rest Home in Sanford.

Miss Moon was born December 31, 1914, the daughter of Fred and Estie (Phillips) Moon. She was a native of Chatham County, retired from Hadley-Peoples Manufacturing Company and worked at Moon's Store for many years. She was the oldest living member of Tyson's Creek Baptist Church and was a member of the Philathia Sunday School Class and the Young at Hearts. Leola lived her whole life at the Harpers Crossroads community.

She is survived by one sister, Lillian Moon Kirkman of Dalton, GA; brother-in-law, Jack Reynolds of Norcross, GA; three nieces and seven nephews.

The family received friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. The funeral was held Friday, November 26, 2010 at 4 p.m. at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church, 10891 Siler City-Glendon Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Scott Walker and Rev. Bob Wachs officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

DORIS MOFFITT BROOKS

Doris Moffitt Brooks, 83, of Chesterfield, Virginia, a native of Siler City and widow of Lyndon Brooks, passed away November 23, 2010.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorcas Brooks Cecil and husband Michael; three grandchildren, Andrew, Kara and Jonathan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Brooks was a member of Gospel Baptist Church.

Her family received friends from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Monday, followed by the funeral services at 12 noon at Blileys-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road, Richmond, Virginia. The interment was private.

THELMA ANN HOLT PICKARD

Thelma Ann Holt Pickard, 81, of Asheboro, died Sunday, (11-21-2010) at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

funeral service was held Tuesday (11-23-2010) at 2 p.m. at Rives Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Tripp Foltz and Rev. Boyd Byerly officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Pickard was born August 16, 1929, the daughter of Newby H. and Carrie Lee (Johnson) Holt. She was a native of Chatham County and a member of Rives Chapel Baptist Church. She retired from Energizer in Asheboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry W. Pickard.

She is survived by two daughters, Gloria S. Terry of Asheboro, Brenda S. Brady of Jamestown; son, Mark Pickard of Raleigh; sisters, Eugenia H. Lanier of Emerald Isle, Margaret H. Dowd of Siler City, Carol H. Burke and Elenanor Hawkins, both of Asheboro; brothers, Bryce Holt, Carl Holt, both of Siler City, Mack Holt of Bear Creek, Jack Holt of Ramseur, Robert Holt of Bonlee; six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Rives Chapel Baptist Church, 4338 Rives Chapel Church Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

VERA WRIGHT MARLEY

Vera Magdalene Wright Marley, 86, of Siler City, died Sunday, (11-21-2010) at Cambridge Hills in Pittsboro.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, (11-24-2010) at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Moore and Tim Gessner officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mrs. Marley was born April 19, 1924. She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker, a member of Siler City Gospel Hall and a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include her husband, John Calvin Marley; daughter, Judy M. Hill of Snow Camp; son, James "Jimmy" L. Marley of Siler City; brother, James Wright of Leaksville, MS; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

BOBBY L. BURGESS

Bobby Lee Burgess, 80, of Ramseur, died Sunday, (11-21-2010) at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington.

Graveside memorial services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, (11-24-2010) at Sunset Knoll Cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Rev. Charles Carter officiated.

Mr. Burgess was a native of Randolph County, and a mobile home set-up contractor who worked with FEMA, helping in disaster areas. He was a Navy Veteran having served on the aircraft carrier USS Midway.

Survivors include a son, Bobby B. Burgess of Ramseur; and brother, Bill Burgess of Asheboro.

ANNE LANE SARTWELL

Anne Lane Sartwell, 73, of 120 John Lane Road, Bear Creek, died Saturday, November 20, 2010 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Sartwell was born December 27, 1936, the daughter of Jack and Myrtle Johnson Lane. A native of Chatham County, Anne was a 1955 graduate of Siler City High School and a 1959 graduate of East Carolina College. She retired as an elementary school teacher with 36 years. Anne was a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church, the Ollie Dixon Sunday school class and did the church bulletin board. She loved to read, going to the beach and sitting on her front porch. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Sartwell, and her parents, Jack and Myrtle Johnson Lane.

She is survived by two sons, Randall Sartwell and wife, Donna of Bear Creek, Todd Sartwell and wife, Brenda of Bear Creek; one sister, Jackanette Lane Teague and husband, Ritchie of Siler City; two step- grandsons, Will and Jordan Phillips; and her beloved dog, Suzie.

The family received friends Sunday, November 21, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Monday, November 22, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Al Martin and Randall Sartwell. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Judy Lane, 45 John Lane Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207; or to West Chatham Food Pantry, 126 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

BRENDA B. STALEY

Brenda Lee Brinkley Staley, 68, of Staley died Thursday (11-11-2010) at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, (11-13-2010) at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel in Ramseur with Rev. Danny Wallace officiating. Burial followed at Staley Cemetery.

A native of Randolph County, she was of the Baptist Faith and retired as a food services manager.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Marie Staley York of Staley; son, Jody Turner; and 18 grandchildren.

Memorials made be made to the Casey Staley College Fund and mailed to Emerson Turner, 1400 Pecan Lane, Libery, NC 27298.

MRS. MAZELLE PHILLIPS CLARK

Mrs. Mazelle Phillips Clark, 96, died Thursday, (11-11-2010) at the home of her daughter in Siler City.

A memorial service was held Saturday, (11-13-2010) at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Smith & Buckner Funeral Home with her cousin, Rev. G. Paul Phillips, Jr. of Graham, officiating. Internment will be at a later date.

Mrs. Clark was born July 2, 1914 to the late Bunn T. Phillips, Sr. and Maud H.Phillips. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, Fort Mill, SC. She was a graduate of Siler City High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wade H. Clark; sister, Pauline P. Stone and brothers, Jennings, Bernard and Jesse Lynn Phillips.

Survivors include daughters, Linda Clark Jeffords of Rock Hill, SC, Janet Clark Clippard of Tega Cay, SC, Rebeckah “Becky” Clark Dark of Siler City; brother, B.T. Phillips, Jr. of Rockingham; four grandchildren, one step-grandchild and five great-grandchildren.

KENNETH EDWIN NORWOOD

Kenneth Edwin Norwood, 62, of Pittsboro, died Thursday, (11-11-2010) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m Sunday, (11-14-2010) at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Robinson presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Norwood was born May 3, 1948 in Durham County, the son of Edwin A. and Evelyn O’Neal Norwood. He was a US Army veteran and retired from Martin-Marietta. A member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, he currently served as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Perkins Norwood; daughters, Cindy Marshall of Chapel Hill, Debbie Tripp, Janie Dail, both of Pittsboro; sister, Gail Felton of Montevideo, MN; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the Mt. Gilead Cemetery Fund, or the Mt. Gilead Grounds Maintenance Fund, % Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 1785 Mt. Gilead Rd., Pittsboro, NC 27312; or to UNC Hospice PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

BETTY D. COLTRANE

Betty Jo Coltrane, 70, of Liberty, died Saturday, (11-13-2010) at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, (11-15-2010) at Whites Chapel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Marion Smith officiating.

A native of Guilford County, she retired from Chatham Hospital in Siler City. She was a member of the Whites Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mamie Burris Duncan, sister Evelyn York, brothers Bill Duncan, John Duncan, Jimmy Duncan, and Richard Ingram.

Surviving is her husband, Larry Coltrane of the home; daughter, Lawanda Coltrane, of the home; sisters, Helen Langley of Liberty, Florence Smith of Climax, Louise Kivett of Ramseur; brothers, Kenneth Duncan of Bolivia, George Duncan, Clifton Duncan, both of Greensboro, and Jerry Duncan of Climax.

Memorials may be made to Whites Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Russell Hoyle, 2298 Ramseur, Julian Road, Liberty, NC 27298.

J. D. HOLLEMAN, JR.

J. D. (Julius Dwight) Holleman, Jr., 79, of Moncure, died Monday, (11-15-2010) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, (11-18-2010) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at New Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery in Knightdale.

Born in Durham County June 6, 1931, Mr. Holleman was a son of J. D. Holleman, Sr. and Zada Howard Holleman. A member of Bible Baptist Church, he was a mechanic with the Chevrolet dealership before opening his own garage. He later was an operator at the Chatham County recycling center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E. Holleman.

Survivors include sons, Roland Holleman of the Asbury Community, John Holleman of Pittsboro; step-daughter, Jane Lamb of Charlotte; sisters, Doris Tant and Madeline Hudson, both of Pittsboro, Inez Sessoms of Fuquay; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Friends visited with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service of Pittsboro.

JOHN SIDNEY LANDIN, JR.

John Sidney Landin, Jr. 62, of the Silk Hope Community died Monday, (11-15-2010) at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, (11-19-2010) at Chatham United Methodist Church with Rev. Patrick Sinclair and Rev. Ann Ritter presiding. Friends may visit with the family following the service.

Born in Edgecombe County on April 1, 1948, Mr. Landin was a son of John Sidney Landin (deceased) and Edith Elizabeth Brake Landin. He attended NC State University, receiving an Associate Degree in Livestock Management and Technology. A self-employed farmer, he worked for Townsend, Inc. for 15 years.

Survivors include his wife Anne; step-son, Scott Mooneyham; mother, Elizabeth Brake Landin; brother, Bruce of Nash County; and two step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to either Chatham United Methodist Church or to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro
