DOROTHY ANN TYSON ROPER

Dorothy Ann Tyson Roper, 63, of Pittsboro, died Friday morning, September 10, 2010, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Roper was born December 12, 1946 in Murray, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Margaret Tyson and Mercer E. Tyson.

She is survived by sons Michael Roper of London, England and Heath Roper; daughter-in-law Sherri, and granddaughter Kinsey of Pittsboro; a sister, Margaret Lynn Webb of Gaffney, SC; and a brother, Richard Tyson of Elizabeth City.

EUNICE HUNT BOGGS

Chapel Hill - Eunice Hunt Boggs, 86, a lifetime resident of Chatham County, died Thursday, September 9, 2010, at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation and Convalescent Center.

Mrs. Boggs was the daughter of the late Earlie Samuel and Emma Horton Hunt. Eunice was the widow of Dennis Boggs who passed away in 1985. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Bell’s Baptist Church (Chatham Co.). Her hobbies included birdwatching, cooking, sewing, and gardening.

Mrs. Boggs is survived by a son, Gil Boggs and companion Tony Armento of Chapel Hill; a daughter, Vickie B. Cecil and husband Robert of Chapel Hill; a sister, Alene Powell of Long Beach, CA; two grandchildren, Sherry C. Webster (Keith) and Jeff Cecil (Ryan); four great-grandchildren, Arielle Webster, Hayley and Kameron Earp, and Natalie Cecil.

Memorial services will be held, Saturday, September 25, 2010, at 11 a.m., at Bell’s Baptist Church with Reverend Rick Washington officiating. Visitation will be immediately following the service, also at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bell’s Baptist Church, c/o The Cemetery Fund, 1274 Farrington Road, Apex, NC 27523.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Chapel Hill Rehabilitation and Liberty Hospice for their fine care of Eunice during her stay with them.

Walker’s Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is handling the arrangements for the Boggs family.

LOUISE LAWRENCE RIGGSBEE

Mrs. Louise Lawrence Riggsbee, 94, died Friday (09-03-2010) at her residence.

Services were held Monday (09-06-2010) at Bynum United Methodist Church withn pastors Gina Barrow, Ray Gooch and Robert Elmore officiating. Interment follwing in the church cemetery.

Born in Wake County September 5, 1915, Mrs. Riggsbee was a daughter of Cicero and Nonie Lawrence. She was retired from Odell Manufacturing and a member of Bynum United Methodist Church where she had served as president of the UMW.

Mrs. Riggsbee is survived by her daughters, Cornelia “Neil” Elmore of Pittsboro, Sue Starnes of Durham; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Hospice, 401 East Third Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

JIMMY DARYL COLLINS

Mr. Jimmy Daryl Collins, 76, Pittsboro, died Monday, (09-06-2010) at WFU - Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

The services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, (09-10-2010) at Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ, with Pastors Bob Wachs, George Akers and Jan Hill officiating. Interment, with Masonic Rites, will follow in the church cemetery.

An Onslow County native, Mr. Collins was born August 15, 1934 to Jackson Z. and Flossie Ellis Collins. During high school he was a member of the US Naval Reserve and continued his service with the US Navy during the Korean conflict. A graduate of Atlantic Christian College, Campbell College, he served the citizens of Chatham County for 43 years, retiring as Health Supervisor. Mr. Collins also served on the Pittsboro Planning Board, was a member of the Lions Club, and was a Master Mason, with membership in Columbus Lodge # 102. He was a member of Pittsboro First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife Joyce Ray Collins; son David Collins of Pittsboro; daughter, Debbie Collins of Pittsboro; brother, Jack Collins of Burlington; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held from 6–8:30 p.m Thursday at Hall – Wynne Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. David Collins.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.

WILLA EILEEN ROMINE

Willa Eileen Romine, age 91, of Springfield, Oh., formerly of Huntington, W.Va., went home to be with her Savior on Wednesday, September 1, 2010.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Grace Gospel Church, Huntington with Pastor Jerry Matt officiating. Burial followed in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Barboursville, W.Va.

Eileen was born on December 6, 1918 in Oklahoma City, OK, the fifth of eight children to parents Theodore Franklin and Carrie (Ferguson) Hatfield. When Eileen was a young girl, the family returned to their roots in West Virginia where Eileen lived out most of her life. Eileen was a godly woman, wife, and mother. During her life she was a well-known children's Sunday School, VBS, and Pioneer Girls teacher. She was also an excellent gardener, creative problem-solver and, perhaps due to having five brothers, very good at sports. Eileen had many interests, and excelled in sewing, cooking, canning, crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader. All who remember Eileen cannot help but think of her loving husband, Cecil, who preceded her in death in 2003. Together Eileen and Cecil served the Lord faithfully in their local church, Grace Gospel Church, Huntington and were a godly testimony to all who knew them. They are well remembered for their generosity and hospitality, as well as the visitation ministry with which they both served. Their happy and loving marriage spanned 56 years. Cecil affectionately called Eileen “my Valentine, ” referring to their anniversary of February 13, 1947.

Eileen was preceded in death by parents Theodore and Carrie Hatfield, husband Cecil Romine, and siblings Sterling, Marshall, Russell, Erskine, Sidney Ivan, and Wanda Hatfield. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children Cecilia (Romine) Swindler of Springfield, Ohio, Van Romine of Siler City, North Carolina, and her brother Ted Hatfield of Huntington, West Virginia, as well as their spouses, five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren, who all knew her as “Mamaw.”

Friends called from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2010 at Henson Mortuary in Barboursville. A memorial service will also be held at Oakwood Village in Springfield, Ohio on Saturday, September 18 at 2:00 pm.

A memorial gift may be given to Bible Centered Ministries, International, Attn: Memorial for Eileen Romine, P.O. Box 249, Akron, PA 17501.

LANE CECIL FESMIRE

Lane Cecil Fesmire, 84, of 214 East Elk Street, Siler City died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mr. Fesmire was born January 8, 1926, the son of Emmett A. and Myrtle (Phillips) Fesmire. He was born in Guilford County. He had worked with Southland Life Insurance, the Town of Ramseur Water Department and retired from the Siler City Water Department. He was a member of Edward Hill Friends Meeting where he had served as church treasurer and was a member of the Young Adult Sunday School Class. Lane was a NASCAR fan and a Navy veteran of WW II.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joyce (McDaniel) Fesmire; two daughters, Lana F. Collins of Durham, Ellen F. Seagroves and husband, David of Siler City; one brother: Paul Fesmire of Siler City, and a granddaughter, Jessica Seagroves of Siler City.
The family received friends Thursday, September 2, 2010 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The memorial service was held Friday, September 3, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Edward Hill Friends Meeting with Josh Conrad officiating.

Memorials may be made to Edward Hill Friends Meeting, 92 Ed Leonard Road, Siler City, NC 27344; American Cancer Society, W. THELMA RUTH WOOD POE

Thelma Ruth Wood Poe, 82, of Bear Creek died Thursday, September 2, 2010 at UNC Hospital.

She was born May 6, 1928 in Randolph County, the daughter of the late Walter and Vergie Coe Wood.
She is predeceased by her husband, Russell D. Poe; her sisters, Pansy Brooks, Bertha Yow, Delcie Underwood and Dorothy Hughes; her brothers, Lonnie Wood and Connie Wood.

She is survived by her son, Darrell Poe and wife Shawn of Bear Creek; stepson, Glenn Poe and wife Roberta of Frisco, TX; stepdaughter, Sandi Ruttman and husband Bob of Baton Rouge, LA.; grandchildren, Jennifer Holder and husband Chris of Bear Creek, Christin Poe of Huntersville, NC, Brittany Poe of Bear Creek, Lynette Wilks and husband Mark of Baton Rouge, LA, Jimmy Padgett of Glendale, AZ; great-grandchildren, Shelby and Preston Holder of Bear Creek, Jessica and Maddy Wilks of Baton Rouge, LA, Brenan and Taylor Padgett of Baton Rouge, LA.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and most of all a loving friend known to all as "MeMaw". Mrs. Poe worked most of her life in textiles and was store manager of CATO in Siler City in the 1960's before retiring due to her health. She loved gardening, cooking, and canning and passed down her many secrets of the kitchen to her grandchildren.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City and other times at the home of Darrell and Shawn Poe in Bear Creek.

A celebration of her life was held on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church in Bear Creek. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were by Smith & Buckner Funeral Home of Siler City.

AYLEEN CHEEK BRADY

Ayleen Cheek Brady, 90, of Siler City, died Thursday, (08-26-2010) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday (08-29-2010) at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel in Ramseur with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Ed Carter officiating. Interment followed at Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery in Bennett.

Mrs. Brady was a native of Randolph County, retired from Klopman Mills and a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olen W. Brady.

Survivors include a son, Donald Brady of Coleridge; one grandson and three great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Christian Church, 5946 Pleasant Grove Church Road, Bennett, NC 27208.

BILLY FARRINGTON

Mr. Billy Farrington, 63, of Chapel Hill died Monday (08-16-2010) at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation Care Center.

Funeral services were held Monday (08-23-2010) at 2 p.m. at Terrell’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Sharon M. Mitchell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Farrington was a graduate of Horton High School, Southern College in Connecticut and was employed with AT&T Telemarketing.

Survivors include a son, Diyancy Seabrook, Sr. of Hamden, CT; sisters, Ada Thomas of Brooklyn, NY, Erma Farrington, Pittsboro, Carol Garrington of Durham; brother, Arthur Farrington of Pittsboro and two grandchildren.

MARGIE L. CHAVIS

Mrs. Margie L. Chavis, 87, of Sanford died Friday (08-13-2010) at her home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday (08-17-2010) at 2 p.m. at Taylor’s Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Eugene Staton and Rev. Quentin Chavis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Chavis was educated in the Chatham County School System and attended Central Community College. She was a member of the pastor aid society of Taylor’s Chapel Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Alexander of Atlanta, GA; son, Rev. Quentin Chavis of Blythewood, SC; brother, William H. Perry of Sanford; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

BOBBY LEE WILLIAMS

Bobby Lee Williams, 53, of Pittsboro, died Saturday, (08-28-2010) from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery, with Pastors Dan Robinson and John Singletary presiding.

Mr. Williams was born September 18, 1955 in Orange County. A former employee of the Town of Pittsboro, he was employed by UNC at Chapel Hill Grounds Department. He attended Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Jeff Williams of Durham, Eric Williams of Chapel Hill; brother, Curtis Williams of Pittsboro; sister, Sheila Eddings of Franklinville. His mother, Effie Williams, preceded him in death.

DR. MAXINE HAFFNER COX, OD

Dr. Maxine Haffner Cox, age 88, of 100 Carolina Meadows Drive, Chapel Hill died Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Cox was born July 2, 1922 in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late C. O. and the late Bessie Fisher Haffner.

Dr. Cox was a native of Crawfordsville, IN and a retired Optometrist. She was a graduate of Purdue University and the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. Maxine was an artist and member of the PI BETA PHI Sorority. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son, James R. Cox, II of Pittsboro, NC; granddaughter, Darcy Cox of Washington, DC; and one sister: Phyllis H. Furrer of Reynolds, IN.

A memorial graveside service will be Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating.
