DUNCAN SINCLAIR CRUICKSHANK II

Duncan Sinclair Cruickshank III, of Siler City, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill.

The son of the late Duncan Sinclair, Jr., and Esther Cruickshank, Duncan was born in Niagara Falls, New York. As a young man, he made a name for himself by rescuing people in boats who had become stranded above Niagara Falls. A graduate of LaSalle High School, he attended Marquette University and then proudly served his country in the National Guard. Working at Airco Speer in Niagara Falls as a Superintendent for more than 25 years, Duncan met and married the love of his life, Judith Arlene Webb Cruickshank.

Duncan is survived by his wife Judith of 48 years and his sister Jean Haseley of Lantana, Florida. He leaves behind a legacy of four surviving children, Duncan Sinclair Cruickshank IV of Siler City, North Carolina, Bruce Cruickshank and his wife Elizabeth of Chesapeake, Virginia, Sharon Guariglia and her husband Richard of Silk Hope, North Carolina, and Brenda Stecher and her husband Joe of Siler City, North Carolina. Duncan also leaves his mark on this world with eight beautiful grandchildren, including Duncan Sinclair Cruickshank V.

RICHARD LEE HEDGECOCK, SR.

Richard Lee Hedgecock, Sr., 75, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday, (08-18-2010) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, (08-20-2010) at Joy Baptist Church.

Mr. Hedgecock was born in Forsyth County to Clyde and Wanda Hedgecock. A graduate of Asheboro High School, he served in the US Marine Corp and then earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from N.C. State University. He owned and operated Richard Hedgecock Construction.

Survivors include his wife Ann; daughters Jennipher, Sawyer and Ashlee; son, Richard, Jr.; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 8300 Health Park #10, Raleigh, NC 27615-4731.

WILLIE EARL FARRAR

Mr. Willie Earl Farrar, 64, of Pittsboro died Thursday (08-19-2010) at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (08-24-2010) at Staunton Memorial CME Church, with burial following in Pittsboro Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Stephanie Green Farrar; sons, Willie Earl Farrar, Jr., Scottie Green; daughter, Elizabeth Farrar; sister, Josephine Marsh; and brother, Lacy Alston.

LEE NORRIS MANN

Mr. Lee Norris Mann of Pittsboro died Friday (08-20-2010) at his home.

Mr. Mann was born April 4, 1927 in Chatham County. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and retired as a designer – draftsman from Bell Telephone Labs, Rockwell International and Combustion Engineering, Inc. He was predeceased by his wife, Elsie; his parents, Ruth H. Mann and W.K. Mann; brothers, Tom and Glenn; and grandson, Curt.

Survivors include a son, Mitchel E. Mann, daughter Melissa L. Mann, and two grandchildren.

The funeral service was held at Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church on Tuesday (08-24-2010) at 3 p.m. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Brown’s Chapel Cemetery Fund, c/o Teresa Farrell, P.O. Box 1048, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

PAUL VERNON CARROLL

Mr. Paul Vernon Carroll, 74, of Pittsboro, died Saturday (08-21-2010) at his home.

Services were conducted by Pastors Patrick Sinclair and Ray Gooch at 11 a.m Tuesday, (08-24-2010) at Chatham United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Born October 10, 1935 in Chatham County, he was the son of James Clifford Carroll and Julia Roberson Carroll. He was a member of Chatham United Methodist Church, where he had taught Sunday School, served as Superintendant, and was a member of the cemetery committee. A previous distributor with Sealtest Dairy, he was a retired route supervisor from Coca-Cola Bottling Company with over 30 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Trema Spaulding Carroll; daughters, Teresa Clark of Siler City, Paula Oldham of Charlotte; a sister, Sarah Frances Post of Pittsboro; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chatham UMC Cemetery Fund, c/o Rev. Patrick Sinclair, 103 Woodberry Forest, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

JOANN BROOKSKIRKMAN

JoAnn Brooks Kirkman, 78, of Goldston died Saturday, (08-21-2010) at the family home.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (08-24-2010) at Goldston Cemetery, with Rev. David Hicks officiating.

Mrs. Kirkman was born July 5, 1932, the daughter of Charlie and Pearl Mason Brooks. A native of Chatham County, she was a member of Goldston Baptist Church. She retired from the Clerk of Courts Office in Pittsboro and UNC Chapel Hill as a travel auditor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyman R. Kirkman.

Survivors include sons, Robert Neil Kirkman of Goldston, John Mark Kirkman of Sanford, Joel Brooks Kirkman and Paul Jason Kirkman, both of Goldston; brother, Charles Brooks of Pittsboro; sisters, Hazel Dixon of Sanford, Francis Williams of Pittsboro; and three grandchildren.

DANIEL CLYDE HICKS

Daniel Clyde Hicks, 83, of Siler City died Tuesday August 17, 2010 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday August 20, 2010 at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett with Rev. Wayne Whitener and Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial was in Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Hicks was a Chatham County native, an Army Veteran of WW II and a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Jean Hicks of the home; son, Danny Hicks and wife Wanda of Siler City; grandchildren, Rachel Esch of Spring Lake, David Hicks of the home; great-grandchild, Dawton Moore and step-great-grandchildren, Jada and Cory Esch.

The Hicks family received friends Thursday August 19, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett and other times at the home of Danny and Wanda Hicks, 7126 Bonlee-Bennett Road, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

MARGARET WILSON PHILLIPS

Siler City – Margaret Wilson Phillips finally got to see her heavenly home Friday, August 20, 2010 after several years of deteriorating health. A memorial service was held at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel in Siler City Monday, August 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Johnson, and Rev. Tom Hallberg officiating. Burial followed at Bear Creek Baptist Church. Visitation was held Sunday, August 22, 2010 from 6- 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner in Siler City.

She was a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, and most of all, a friend. Mrs. Phillips worked many years at Kellwood Manufacturing in Siler City before she became unable. She was a good Christian woman, who faithfully attended First Wesleyan Church most of her life and Hickory Grove Methodist the past two years. She was loved and gave love. Her church, family and friends were what she loved most. She also loved to grow things in her garden and share them with the people she loved.

She was born July 8, 1928 to the late Madge Abbott Wilson and James Wilson. She is preceded in death by her husband, Talmage Phillips; two sons, Thomas Lee Phillips, Barry Phillips; one daughter, Madge Phillips Smith; one brother, Buck Wilson; and one sister, Peggy Trogdon.

She is survived by one daughter, Joann Glass and husband, Joe of Liberty; one son-in-law, Kerney Smith, Jr. of Siler City. She leaves behind two granddaughters, Amy Darcus (Zac) of Raleigh, Kari Karlo (Sizza) of Las Mesa, CA; two grandsons, Randy Glass (Noelle) of Charlotte, Jason Glass (Rebekkah) of Liberty; two great-granddaughters, Holly Glass and Ameria Karlo; five great-grandsons, Phillips Glass, Brackett Glass, Kindle Darcus, Kaydin Darcus, Tayshaun Karlo and a special brother-in-law and wife, Loumis and Barbara Phillips of Bear Creek.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bear Creek Baptist Church, 1278 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207; or First Wesleyan Church, 608 N. 3rd Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

LOUISE GUTHRIE JOHNSON

Louise Guthrie Johnson, 88, of Siler City died Monday, (08-16-2010) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

funeral service will be held Friday, (08-20-2010) at 2 p.m. at South Fork Friends Meeting, with Ricky Sessoms officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson was born August 29, 1921, the daughter of Thomas Earl and Exie Lindley Guthrie. She was a native of Chatham County, a nursing aide and member of South Fork Friends Meeting. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, J. T. Johnson; son, Robert Lee Johnson; daughter, Jean Ellington and a great-grandchild, Preston Capps.

She is survived by a son, Jessie Earl Johnson of Burnsville; ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, (08-19-2010) from 7-9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home and other times at the home of Carson Ellington, 1220 Van Thomas Road, Pittsboro.

MARIE PELL BRAY

Sonia Marie Pell Bray (Marie), 86, of 1346 Sunset Drive, Siler City, died Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the Cancer Center of High Point Regional Hospital.

A native of Randolph County, she was born July 31, 1924 to the late John Herman and Bertie Mae Faulkner Pell. She was founder of The Friendly Florist and retired as office supervisor of Carolina Power and Light after 33 1/2 years service.

Mrs. Bray was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City. She sang in the choir, served as a Sunday school teacher, was a member of the Esther Sunday School Class, and chaired the flower committee for many years. Marie had a lifelong love of flowers and was a member of the Dig'n Dream Garden Club. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #9 and past Worthy Matron.

Mrs. Bray is survived by her husband of 66 years, J. C. Bray, her "special Emerson children", Grace Terrell, High Point, Jack Emerson, Fancy Gap, Virginia, Pam Zich, Springfield, Virginia, Melody Emerson of Siler City; and a very special niece, Linda Hough Mitchell, of Durham. Also surviving are sister, Golda Joyce of Ramseur; brother, Sybrant Pell of Elkhart, Indiana, and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Saturday, August 14, from six until eight.
A memorial service was held Sunday, August 15 at 3 o'clock at First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart and Rev. Jim Wall officiating. Burial followed at Brush Creek Church cemetery.

LOIS DICKENS

Mary Lois Kindley Dickens, age 81, of Asheboro went to be with her Savior Thursday, August 12, 2010 at her home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 4 p.m. at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Tim Gessner, Dale Kennedy, and Charles Carter officiating. Burial was in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lois' first love was Christ, her Lord. She fellowshipped at Grace & Truth Assembly. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker. She loved her garden and shared its bounty.

She is survived by her daughters, Josephine Gessner and husband Tim of Pittsboro, Frances Kennedy and husband Dale of Asheboro, Brenda Arnold and husband Dan of Franklinville, Doris Carter and husband Charles of Franklinville, Angie Staley and husband Tim of Franklinville; son, Charles Dickens and his fiancée, Maggie of Palmer, AK; sisters, Edith McElreath of Asheboro, Stella Edwards of Asheboro; half-brother, William Kindley of Florida; half-sister, Juanita Hollifield of Asheboro; 20 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Friday, August 13, 2010 from 7-9 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro.

MICHAEL RALPH “MIKE” FIELDS

Michael Ralph “Mike” Fields, 58, of 445 NC Hwy 22/42, Bennett, died Saturday, August 14, 2010 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Bennett Baptist Church, where he attended, with Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Fields was a Chatham County native, a mechanic at Siler City Automotive and past Governor of Siler City Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Baxter Fields of the home; daughter, Carmen M. Fields of Apex; sons, Chad Fields and wife Lauren of Cary, Michael Alex “Chuck” Fields and wife Ashlea of Raleigh;grandchildren, Tyler and Claire Fields of Cary, Brooke Fields of Raleigh;mother, Marjorie Buckner of Siler City; sister, Nanette Buckner of Siler City;father-in-law, Henry Baxter of Asheboro; sister-in-law, Sherree Menius and husband Ed of Asheboro; also his K-9 pals Riggs and Chunk.
