ALEX GLENN DUNN

Alex Glenn Dunn, Sr., 93, postmaster, merchant, farmer, of 1705 Elmer Moore Road, Bonlee died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at his residence.
Mr. Dunn was born May 13, 1916, the son of Willis L. and Ila Womble Dunn. Mr. Dunn was a native of Chatham County, grew up in the Sandy Branch Community, where he joined Sandy Branch Baptist Church and attended until his marriage to Nancy Womble of Siler City on June 28, 1940. They moved to Bonlee where he joined Bonlee Baptist Church where he was a faithful member serving as Sunday School teacher and a Deacon. Mr. Dunn owned and operated Bonlee Hardware Store for over 40 years and served as Bonlee Postmaster for over 30 years. The hardware store was the center of the local community. One of his greatest satisfactions was helping people get running water during the 1940's and 50's, some for the first time.

He was a cattle farmer on his NC Century Farm that had been in his family for four generations and a former member of the Chatham County Cattleman's Association. Alex was a member of Mt. Vernon Lodge #143 A.F. & A.M. for over 60 years, where a square and compass pin is presented in his honor to any master Mason the first time he attends Mt. Vernon Lodge. He was a charter member of Amran Shrine Temple of Raleigh and a 32nd Degree Mason. He served on the Chatham County Planning Board and the local school board. In 1990 Alex received the Chatham Central High School Distinguished Citizen Service Award. During the school's early years he worked to bring facilities and advantages to that rural high school. He was on the founding board of directors for Central Carolina Community College.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Nancy Womble Dunn; two sons, Alex Glenn Dunn, Jr. and wife, Nancy Tyson Dunn of Bear Creek, Alvis Eugene Dunn and wife, Leah McGinnis Dunn of Greensboro; granddaughter, Deliah Jane Dunn of Greensboro; one sister, Ethel D. Gaines of Bear Creek; sisters-in-laws, Lila Brewer, Irma Beal, Emma Rue Yanchurak, Nadine Short; brother-in-law, Lynton Womble; and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Friday, October 16, 2009 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Darrell Williams and Rev. Jim Wall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites.

HAZEL LEWIS McLAURIN

Hazel Lewis McLaurin, 88, of Robbins, died Saturday, October 17, 2009 at her home.

Hazel was born January 5, 1921, in Moore County, the eldest daughter of the late Coy S. and Elma Lewis. She graduated from Elise Academy and attended Peace College in Raleigh. Hazel was married to the late H. L. (Bill) McLaurin in 1941.

A native of Robbins, Mrs. McLaurin was owner and operator of S&M Café for more than twenty years. Later she worked for H. J. Baker Company in a chemical lab. Hazel was very active in her church and community. As a life long member of Elise Presbyterian Church, she served faithfully as a deacon, president and secretary of the Women of the Church, circle chairman, and flower committee leader. She also served as president of the Robbins Women’s Club. In addition, Hazel was known as an avid bridge player, a talented seamstress, a creative flower arranger, and a wonderful cook.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents and husband, was her brother, Coy Lewis, Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Ann M. Douglas and husband Bob of Pinnacle; son, Hugh L. McLaurin and wife Sharon of Greensboro; daughter, Jane M. Maness and husband Donald of Siler City; sisters, Margaret Cleetwood of Carthage, Betty Garner of Robbins, Patricia Stephens of Winston Salem; two grandsons, Sean Douglas and Scott McLaurin; two granddaughters Heather King and Laurin Councilman; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 19, at Kennedy Funeral Home in Robbins.

A celebration of Hazel’s life was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20 at Elise Presbyterian Church in Robbins.

FAYE PATTISHALL CARTER

Faye Pattishall Carter, 69, of 659 J.C. Teague Road, Staley died Sunday, October 18, 2009 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City..

Mrs. Carter was born May 22, 1940, the daughter of Carlton Moody and Corinne (Carroll) Pattishall. Mrs. Carter was a native of Chatham County. Faye was the valedictorian of the last graduating class of Staley High School. She was employed with the Randolph County Health Department for 35 years and also worked at Randolph Hospital. She was a Sunday School teacher and the treasurer with the Staley Baptist Church. Faye was an organ donor.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Gail Carter and one son, Neil Carter and wife Sherri of Staley; granddaughter, Brynn Carter of Staley; cousins, Patty Hunt of Randleman, Janie Nance of Liberty, and Baxter Burke of Georgia.

The family received friends Tuesday, October 20, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the home, 659 J.C. Teague Road, Staley. The graveside service was held Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Staley Cemetery, Main Street, Staley with Rev. Jack Livingston and Rev. Tommy Smith officiating.

Memorials may be made to Staley Volunteer Fire Department, 410 Railroad Street, Staley, NC 27355.

MR. WILLIAM “BILL” ALLEN BRINKLEY

Mr. William “Bill” Allen Brinkley, 75, of Siler City passed away on Monday, October 19, 2009 at his home.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, October 21 at 2 p.m. at The Loflin Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Staley Cemetery. The family received friends on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was the son of the late Hue and Ruby Hamilton Brinkley and was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Surviving is his wife of 23 years, Dorothy McVay Brinkley; one daughter, Vickie Spivey (Brian) of Greensboro; one son, Allen Brinkley of Salisbury; two step-sons, Jeff Eanes (Allison) of Greensboro and Gary Eanes of Summerfield; one granddaughter, Gabrielle Spivey; two step-grandsons, Ethan and Wes Eanes; one sister, Brenda Staley of Staley and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1414 East Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

GURNEY E. “BOOSIE” SMITH

Gurney E. " Boosie" Smith, 91, of Siler City died Tuesday, (10-06-09) at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

The graveside service, with military rites, was held Friday, (10-09-09) at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev Jim Whittaker officiating.

Mr. Smith was the son of Coley M. and Lula Moore Smith and a native of Chatham County. He retired from Hadley Peoples Mfg., was an Army veteran of WWII, and attended West End United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Wicker Smith and a granddaughter, Holly Kiser.

Survivors include son, Jack E. Smith; daughters, Jill S. Kiser, Ginger S. Moore all of Siler City; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

JUNIUS HAROLD TEAGUE

Junius Harold Teague, 88, of Siler City died Wednesday, (10-07-09).

A graveside service was held Friday, (10-09-09) at 4 p.m. at Flint Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Teague was the son of the late William and Ada Whitehead Teague. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Juanita O’Briant Teague; sister Martha Stout and brother, Ernest Teague.

Survivors include a daughter, Reva Gail Cranford of Siler City; sons, Michael Harold Teague of Burlington, Jeffrey Brian Teague of Siler City; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

PAULINE BRADY MORRIS

Pauline Brady Morris, 81, of Mooresville, died Wednesday, (10-07-09) at Levine Dickson Hospice in Huntersville.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m., Saturday, (10-10-09) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Bennett, with Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was a Chatham County native, retired from Kellwood Mfg. and a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elijah B. Morris.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Patterson, of Raleigh; Beverly Davis, of Mooresville; son, David Morris, of Little River, SC; sister, Viola Saunders, of Ramseur; brother, John Brady, of Burlington; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

CLARENCE EDWARD HACKNEY

Mr. Clarence Edward Hackney, 68, of Moncure died Wednesday (10-06-09) at Chapel Hill Rehab/Health care.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday (10-10-09) at C.E. Willie Funeral Chapel in Pittsboro.

Survivors include sons, Clarence Edward Hackney, Jr., Kenneth M. Hackney, Raiford Smith, all of Siler City, Walter G. Hackney of Moncure; daughters, Gloria Rogers of Pittsboro, Laverne Burnett of Moncure; brothers, James Hackney, Tom Hackney, Carl Hackney, all of Moncure; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

VERNELL M. KIDD

Vernell Maness Kidd, 75, of Bennett, died Saturday, (10-10-09) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, (10-13-09) at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Curtis Barbery and Jamie Brown, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Kidd was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and member of the Beulah Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Eulos Kidd; daughters, Annette Williams, Carol O'Neal, both of High Falls, Wanda Jones of Ramseur, Vonda Purvis of Robbins; son, Farrell Kidd of High Falls; sisters, Thelma Garner of Seagrove, Shirley Kidd of Bennett, Myrtis Brady of Carthage; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 8454 Howard Mill Road, Bennett, NC 27208.

LAVON MORETZ SPAULDING

Mrs. Lavon Moretz Spaulding, 93, of Pittsboro died Sunday, (10-11-09) at the Laurels of Chatham.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, (10-13-09) at Chatham United Methodist Church with Rev. Patrick Sinclair officiating. Graveside rites were held at 12 noon Wednesday, (10-14-09) at Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery in Fleetwood.

The daughter of John and Cora Luther Moretz, Mrs. Spaulding was born in Ashe County. She was a homemaker, a member of Chatham United Methodist Church and the widow of Austin M. Spaulding.

Survivors include sons, Conrad Spaulding of CoCo, FL, Edwin Spaulding of Foxfire Village; daughters, Esta Smith of Greensboro, Trema Carroll of Pittsboro, Dara Eddins of Moncure; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

OLA TYSOR NEAL

Ola Tysor Neal, 93, of Silk Hope died Tuesday (10-06-09) at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, (10-16-09) at Pleasant Hill UMC, with Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial was held at 2 p.m. Thursday (10-08-09) at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church.

Mrs. Neal, a native of Pittsboro was a self-employed business owner.

Survivors include a son, Carson V. Neal; two grandchildren, Patric and Megan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Neal and a son, Richardo Neal.

VIRGINIA LASSITER JEFFRESS

Clarksville, Virginia – Mrs. Virginia Lassiter Jeffress, 86, daughter of the late Joseph and Jemmie Lassiter, died Thursday afternoon in Pittsboro.

Virginia was native to Vance County, NC; graduated from Henderson High School and attended Elon College. As a young woman she served in the USO and became a US Army wife. She traveled the world with their careers. Upon her husband's retirement they moved to Finchley, Va and she later moved to Boydton. While living in Boydton she loved and was known by her job at the Boydton Library. As her health declined she moved to North Carolina to be near her daughter. She attended First Methodist Church and enjoyed her friends from Braxton Manor and Coventry House.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church of which she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her daughters Victoria Hutchins of Gambrills, MD, Jane Wrenn and her husband, Robert, of Siler City; a sister Evelyn Woodie of Henderson, NC; four grandchildren Adam Wrenn, Karen Jeffress, Elizabeth Wrenn, Kim Oliver; and one great granddaughter, Chelsea Simon. She was pre-deceased by a son, William Jethro Jeffress, Jr.

The family received friends at Liberty Baptist Church Tuesday from 1 until 2 p.m.
