ALFRED JUSTICE HACKNEY
Mr. Alfred Justice Hackney, 98, formerly of Siler City, recently residing at Carillon Assisted Living, died Tuesday, October 12, 2009, at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.
Mr. Hackney was born October 22, 1910 in Chatham County, the son of William Joseph Hackney and Minnie Justice Hackney, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jones Hackney and by brothers, Harold, George, Robert and Charlie Hackney.
Mr. Hackney is survived by sons, Alfred Justice Hackney, Jr. and wife, Betty of Whiteville, William Spencer Hackney of Mooresville; daughter, Jane Hackney Colquitt and husband, David of Raleigh. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Alfred attended High Point Business College and later worked with the US Postal Service as assistant Postmaster for 34 years. "Pop", as he was affectionately known to his friends and family, loved to fish and hunt and was an avid golfer until his 90's. He also was a very successful gardener. His family was a very important part of his life as well as his caregivers at Carillon, where he had resided for the last six years.
Funeral services will be Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Siler City, where he was a member, with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

ARVIE LEE STOUT
Mr. Arvie Lee Stout, 88, of Pittsboro died Tuesday (09-29-09) at The Laurels of Chatham.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday (10-02-09) at Hall–Wynne Funeral Home, Griffin Chapel. Interment followed in Rives Chapel Church Cemetery.
Mr. Stout was a native of Chatham County, the son of Arthur Monroe Stout and Ada Johnson Stout. He was the co-owner/operator of Baldwin-Stout Clothing and was preceded in death by his wife Ethelene Presnell Stout.
Survivors include a son, Claude Louis Stout of Germanton, MD; sister, Lois Shaw of Pittsboro; and two grandchildren.

CASEY HERBERT JONES
Casey Herbert Jones, 20, of Bennett died Sunday (10-04-09) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City from injuries received in a motor biking accident.
Funeral services were held Tuesday (10-06-09) at 2 p.m. from Beulah Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. Curtis Barbery and Rev. Gene Booker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Casey was a graduate of Chatham Central High School and Central Carolina Community College with a degree in motorcycle mechanics. He worked at Flatwood Dog Supply and Jones and Ritter Sawmil, both of Bennett.
Survivors include his parents, Herbie and Lisa Cox Jones of the home; brothers, Chase and Cory Jones of the home, grandmothers, Peggy Kelly Jones and Janice Hussey Cox, both of Bennett.
LELA CLARK EVANS
Lela Clark Evans, 84, of Ramseur died Friday, (10-02-09) at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Monday (10-05-09) at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church, with Rev. Scott Faw officiating. Burial followed in the Antioch Christian Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Evans was the daughter of Jourdan T. and Leslie Dowdy Evans. She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of Baptist Gulf House of Prayer. She was preceded in death by husband, Charles Lee Evans, Jr. and a son, William Ray Evans.
Survivors include daughters, Brenda Fore of Ramseur, Gayle Chambers, Lois Smith both of Sanford: sons, Reid Evans, Scott Evans, John Evans all of Sanford; sisters, Janie Moore of Gulf, Virginia Beal of Bear Creek; fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great- grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
MARGIE H. ELLISON
Mrs. Margie H. Ellison, 59, of Bear Creek died FRiday (10-02-09) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Alston Chapel Holiness Church in Pittsboro.
Mrs. Ellison is the daughter of the late Charlie Horton and Ruth Wadell Horton.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph B. Ellison; mother, Ruth Horton; son, Khalid-Amin; sister, Stella Jean Knight; and one grandson.
CLARENCE EDWARD
Mr. Clarence Edward, 61, of Burlington died Friday (09-25-09) at Hospice Care.
Funeral services were held Wednesday (09-30-09) at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chapel Hill with Rev. Maxthel Clemons officiating. Burial followed in Chapel Hill Memorial Garden.
Mr. Edward was a graduate of Horton High School.
Survivors include daughters, Tonya E. Thomas of Burlington, Sharon E. DeGraffenreid of Charlotte; brother, Wilbert Edwards of Durham; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
ELLA RONE PARRISH
Mrs. Ella Rone Parrish, 61, of Chapel Hill died Friday (09-25-09) at her residence.
Funeral services were held Thursday (10-01-09) at Mt. Sinai AME Church in Pittsboro, with Rev. Phillip Lynch officiating. Burial followed in Pittsboro Cemetery.
Mrs. Parrish was a graduate of Horton High School and attended Durham Technical Scool. She retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Survivors include her husband, George Parrish of the home; sisters, Mary, Rose, Rosa, all of Pittsboro, Pearl; brothers, Lonnie, Walter, Whiley, and Mel, all of Pittsboro.
RALPH CALVIN DARK
Ralph Calvin Dark, 68, of Siler City died Saturday (10-03-09) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Burial will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday (10-08-09) at First Missionary Baptist Church in Siler City. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.
Mr. Dark was the son of the late Olivia M. Dark and the late Garland Womble. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John H. Dark, Jimmy G. Dark, Jerry L. Dark; and sisters, Bettye M. Headen, Janice Dark and Sarah Twitty.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Bowden Dark of Siler City; son, R. Calvin Dark II of Washington, DC; brother, George M. Dark of Siler City; sisters, Gwendolyn Siler, Zylphia A. Dark, Susan Alston, all of Siler City, and Helen McLaughlin of Greensboro.

BENJAMIN PAUL COUCH
Benjamin Paul Couch, 93, of 303 South Main Street and formerly of Bennett died Tuesday Sept. 29, 2009 at Hillside Nursing Home.
A Memorial Graveside service was held at 2 p.m.Sat.Oct. 3, 2009 at Bennett Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by Randolph County Honor Guard.
Mr. Couch was a Lancaster, S.C. native and was a Veteran of WW11 and the Korean Conflict. After retirement from military service he was a poultry farmer for many years. Ben loved to tell a good story, golf with his buddies and build bird houses.
Survivors: wife, Lucille Brady Couch of Walterboro, S.C.; daughter, Debra B. Ludas of Wake Forest; son, Wayman B. Couch of Walterboro, S.C.; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
The Couch family received friends in the church fellowship hall from noon until service time.
Old golfing buddies were encouraged to wear casual golf attire for the service.

MARY SUE HERNDON LAWSON
Mrs. Mary Sue Herndon Lawson, age 87, of Siler City, died Thursday, October 1, 2009, at The Tapestry House Assisted Living in Alpharetta, Georgia.
The funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, October 4 at Siler City Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sue Flippin officiating. Burial followed at Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Russell Lawson.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Chuck Bussey of Hampton, GA, Sherri and Mark Noftsinger of Acworth, GA; four grandchildren, Parker, Dylan and Malachi Bussey, Adam Noftsinger; sister, Vera Helms; many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thanks to everyone at The Tapestry House for all the love and care they gave to Sue.
The family received friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, October 3 at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City.

LEE GORDON GUNTER
Lee Gordon Gunter, 88, of 2315 Walter Bright Road, Sanford, died Friday, October 2, 2009 at Central Carolina Hospital.
Mr. Gunter was born in Chatham County on September 28, 1921 to the late Offie Green Gunter and Luna Richardson Gunter. He was a long-time employee of General Timber. He was a retired logger for Harris Lumber Company. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, a graduate of Pittsboro High School and was considered a community resource to the Asbury Community. His first wife, Mabel Dowdy Gunter preceded him in death in 1991.
Surviving him are his wife, Maxine Burns Gunter of Pittsboro; a son, Doug Gunter and wife Diane of Sanford; daughters, Reba Gunter Thomas and husband Ronald of Sanford, Martha Gunter Thompson and husband Joe of Wilkesboro; sister, Mary Hilda Stout of Sanford; four grandchildren, Richard Gunter and wife Amy of Sanford, Patrick Gunter and wife Beverly of Sanford, Amber Pilkington and husband Bryan of Deep River, Adam Thompson of Lausanne, Switzerland; three great-grandchildren, Lindsay Gunter of Sanford, Andrew Gunter of Sanford, Anna Mabel Pilkington of Deep River; step-daughter, Kay Clawson and husband Randy of Marion, VA and her daughters, Susan and Brittany.
The family received friends on Sunday, October 4, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The funeral was held Monday, October 5, 2009 at Asbury United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Burns presiding. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
