PATRICIA GAIL FERGUSON BREWER

Patricia Gail Ferguson Brewer, 51, of Siler City died Monday (10-27-2008) at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (12-13-2008) at the Church of God in Siler City.

Survivors include a daughter, Mandolyn Brewer of Bear Creek; mother, Helen McClintock of Siler City; father, R.D. Ferguson of Liberty; brothers, Dewey Ferguson, Kenneth Ferguson, both of Siler City, Eddie Ferguson of Liberty; sisters, Angie Ferguson of Asheboro, and Lisa Ferguson of Liberty.

GEORGE THOMAS SMINK, JR.

George Thomas Smink, Jr., age 72, Siler City died Saturday, December 6, 2008 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mr. Smink was a native of Elfinwild, PA and a retired engineer consultant for the State of NC Department of Public Instruction. Mr. Smink was a graduate of California State University in PA, Duke University and Appalachian State University. Additionally, he attended the University of Pittsburgh and Dukane. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and with the Durham Corale Community Musical Society. He was a charter member of the Neuse River Valley Model Railroad Club in Raleigh. Mr. Smink served his community and his country as an Occoneechee Council Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America and an Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife: Dr. Jane (Moore) Smink and two sons: George Thomas Smink, III of Durham, NC, Karl F. Smink and wife, Teah of Thomasville, NC; one sister: Carol S. Willcox of Asheville, NC;granddaughter, Jordan A. Smink; grandson, Karl A. Smink; and his beloved nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 11, 2008 from 9:45-11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City, NC. The funeral will be Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Sykes officiating. A graveside service and burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.

C. SHELLIE GAINES, JR.

Corbett Shellie Gaines, Jr., age 80, of 256 Bellevue Street, Goldston, died Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City. Mr.

Gaines was born July 24, 1928, the son of Corbett S. and Clara Belle (Phillips) Gaines, Sr.

Shellie was a native of Goldston and retired from Pomona Pipe. He was a member of Goldston Baptist Church, the Men's Sunday school class and served as an usher. He was a member of the Goldston Lion's Club and Goldston Fire Department. Shellie was involved in the family lumber business and ran an Esso service station. He attended Campbell College and was a good Samaritan who met the needs of many people. He had a servant's heart and loved “The Farm”. Shellie’s greatest love was his wife (Angel), as he always referred to her, his children and grandchildren, whom he treated each one equally and loved seeing each and every one of them. He also loved boating and fishing. Mr. Gaines was preceded in death by a son, Corbett Shellie Gaines, III.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie (Ore) Gaines; two daughters, Shelia G.Walters and husband, Cecil of Siler City, Linda G. Mashburn and husband, Lou of Sanford; one son, Steven Warner Gaines and wife, Jan of Goldston; one sister, Delores G. Register of Sanford; three brothers, Phil S. Gaines, Sr. of Siler City, John Gaines of Goldston, Max Gaines of Washington; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two step-daughters, Jackie Lowe of Siler City, Dale Brewer of North Myrtle Beach, SC; six step-grandchildren and 13 step-great grandchildren.

The family received friends Monday, December 8, 2008 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Goldston Baptist Church, 190 North Church Street, Goldston with Rev. Mitch Roginsky and the Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial was in Goldston Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the BLIST: Business Leaders Inspired to Serve, Missions Fund, 501C Nonprofit, P O Box 338, Goldston, NC 27252 based on Romans 10, verses 14-15. " How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things.”

WORTH RODGERS

Worth Rodgers, 83, of Siler City died Sunday (11-02-2008) at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Evans Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth Swann officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Rodgers was a native of Chatham County, retired from Selig Manufacturing Company, and a member of Evans Chapel Church.

Survivors include sisters, Pauline Rodgers, Vadie Siler, Marie McClain, all of Siler City, Hannah Alston of Snow Camp; brothers, Roland Rogers of Snow Camp, Marcellus Rodgers of Siler City; step-daughters, Annie Lois Miller of Siler City, Gwenda Moore of Pittsboro; 26 step-grandchildren and 39 step- great-grandchildren.

ELLIS LEE BROOKS

Ellis Lee Brooks, 60, or Siler City died Saturday (11-15-2008) at U.N.C. Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Olivers Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Thedelmon Cromartie officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Books was a native of Randolph County and a retired security officer.

Survivors include his wife Patricia; children, Quinton Brooks, Myra Brooks, both of Washington, DC, Gregory Thomas, Shanika Brooks, Sharonda Daniels, all of Hartford, CT; brothers, Jamie Brooks, Sterling Brewer; and eight grandchildren.

ELDON LEE “BUTCH” PHILLIPS

Eldon Lee “Butch” Phillips, 58, of Charlotte died at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (11-26-2008) at Highfalls United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Herndon officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Phillips was a native of Moore County, the son of the late Ralph Lee and Vada Verline Teague Phillips. He was a US Army veteran serving in the Vietnam conflict, and currently pursued a career in accounting.

Survivors include sisters, Catherine P. Graham of Carthage, Marie Webster of Pittsboro and a brother, Donald Phillips of Harrisburg.

MRS. JOSSIE LEE GODFREY

Mrs. Jossie Lee Godfrey, 79, died Sunday, November 30, 2008 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at New Life Fellowship Church, with Dr. Gail Dickens, Rev. Tony Capehart and Rev. Pearl Castleberry officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Godfrey was preceded in death by her sisters, Janice Stone, Edna Rogers, Mae Taylor, Alma McGehee; brothers, Luther Jackson, Jimmy Jackson; and a great grandchild, Jamie Andrew Godfrey.

Surviving is a daughter, Shirley G. Holder of Siler City; sons, Jessie William Godfrey, Leon C. Godfrey Michael G. Godfrey, Eddie L. Godfrey, all of Sanford, Danny E. Godfrey of Cameron, Tony W. Godfrey of Lemon Springs; brother, Frank Johnson of Sanford; sisters, Ola McGehee and Alice Holder, both of Sanford; 22 grandchildren, and 37 great- grandchildren.

BOBBY HICKS

Robert Scott “Bobby” Hicks, 70, of Staley, died Sunday (11-30-2008) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday (12-03-2008) at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Holyfield. Burial followed at Pine Rest Cemetery in Robbins.

Mr. Hicks was a native of Randolph County, retired from Ramtex, and a farmer. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Kennedy Hicks of the home; son, Dale Kennedy of Robbins; daughters, Deborah Cockman of Bennett, Sharon Nichols of Carthage; brother, Billy Hicks of Staley; and five grandchildren.

VIRGINIA MARSH RIVES

Virginia Marsh Rives, 96, of Pittsboro died Saturday (11-22-2008) at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation in Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (11-26-2008) at Union Grove AME Zion Church, Bear Creek with Rev. Gaylyn Wilson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Rives was a member of Union Grove AME Zion Church.

Survivors include four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

DOCK ERVIN BAINES

Dock Ervin Baines, 80 of Siler City died Tuesday (11-25-2008) at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (11-29-2008) at First Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Gray officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Baines was a native of Johnston county and a member of First Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Maggie Baines; daughter, Brenda Blade of Terra-Haute, Indiana; sons, Ervine L. Baines of Burlington, Ellis B. Baines of the home, and Eric L. Baines of Charlotte.

ARTHUR ANTHONY COLUCCI

Mr. Arthur Anthony Colucci, 86, of Pittsboro died Wednesday (11-26-2008) at his home.

Memorial services were held Sunday (11-30-2008) at 2:30 p.m. at Saint Bartholomews Episcopal Church with Rev. Dr. Carl Edwards officiating. A committal service followed in the church gardens.

Mr. Colucci was a native of Brooklyn, NY, and the son of the late Anthony Colucci and Helen Sochacka. He served in the army in WW II as a Tech (5) Sergeant with the 101st Signal Batallion in the Pacific. Prior to retirement, he worked as a chemical operator with Reichold Corporation.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; sons, Anthony Colucci of Old Bridge, NJ, Carl Colucci of Margate, NJ; daughter, Helen C. Hill of Pittsboro; brother, Edward Colucci of Toms River, NJ; sisters, Florence Burden, Josephine Rogine, Toms River, NJ; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Liberty Hospice, 336 South Main Street, Raeford, NC 28376; or to the American Heart Association Triad Area of NC, 202 Centerport Drive, Suite 100, Greensboro, NC 27409.

HELEN ELIZABETH McLERAN

Helen McLeran passed away on November 11, 2008, after a brave battle with lung disease at Carolina Meadows where she resided for 20 years. She was born in Caldwell, N.J., February 26, 1914, and was the daughter of Anna Bergman, and Willard Jessie Terry of Doswell, Va.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Allan McLane McLeran of Katonah, N.Y., where they lived for 55 years, and Floyd D. Frost III of Durham. Helen is survived by a son, John E. McLeran and wife, Penny, of West Redding, Conn.; and Nancy M. Fore, and husband, Thomas, of Pittsboro. She is survived by four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Helen was a volunteer of the American Red Cross for many years. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of St. Matthews Episcopal Church of Bedford, N.Y., and handmade many of the beautiful alter linens. Helen was a concert pianist in her early years in Virginia. She was an avid flower gardener, and won a number of awards for her exquisite flower arrangements. Those who knew her marveled at her endless generosity, kindness and ever cheerful spirit.

A memorial service is planned for January 17, 2009, at 3 p.m. in the chapel at Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church, Chapel Hill.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross in her name.

DAVE WILEY ROBERTS

Dave Wiley Roberts, 84, of Pittsboro, passed away peacefully on Sunday November 30, 2008 at UNC Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Dave was born in Birmingham, Alabama on July 4, 1924; his family moved to North Carolina in 1928. He served in the Navy during WW II in the South Pacific as a tail gunner on a B-24 bomber. He flew 33 combat missions in enemy territory and received the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross.

Upon separation from the Navy, Dave attended watch-making school and became a certified watchmaker. He was the owner of Roberts’ Jewelry and Drug Sundries for 25 years. He worked on many commercial construction projects as a building supervisor for Triad Construction Co. He retired from a position as maintenance supervisor at Lenox Baker Children’s Hospital in Durham in 1986. Dave’s hobbies included creating beautiful pieces of

furniture from his woodworking shop. He made a variety of different

tables, always giving them to family and friends. He also enjoyed many years on the golf course with his friends. He and his wife were fortunate to travel to Europe and Canada as well as many places in the US with friends and family.

Dave was a charter member of the VFW Post 7313. He served on the Chatham

County Board of Education from 1971-1976. For many years he was very active in the Pittsboro Baptist Church, where he was a lifelong member.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Sara Corbitt Roberts; daughters Emily Foushee and husband Frank of Pittsboro, Martha Morse and husband Matthew of Glen Ellyn, IL; Susie Phelps and husband Chris of Weddington, NC; grandchildren Marcia Foushee, Matthew Foushee and wife Kristy, Martin, Lizzy and Sydney Morse, and Ben Phelps; great-grandson Wiley Foushee; and half brother, Jim Haynes.

He was preceded in death by his mother Almerdine Haynes and father Archie Dan Roberts, Sr. and step-father Fred Haynes and his brothers Archie and Bob Roberts.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Griffin Funeral Home, Pittsboro. A funeral service and celebration of Dave’

s life was held at 2 p.m. on December 3, 2008 at the Pittsboro Baptist Church.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions may elect to send donations to Chatham County Council on Aging or to the charity of their choice.
