WILLIE DUNCAN

Willie Anderson Duncan, age 95, of Siler City died Thursday (11-13-2008) at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation.

Funeral services were held Saturday (11-15-2008) at 2 p.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church with Rev. Gregg W. Burris and Rev. Gene Booker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites.

Mr. Duncan, a native of Piggott, AR, was the son of John Anderson and Alma Keller Duncan. He was a retired night watchman with Kellwood, a farmer, and operated Duncan’s Store at Crutchfield’s Crossroads. He was a member of Rocky River Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He served in the Army in WW II. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; two sons, Tommy Duncan, Truman Duncan, Sr.; four brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtice Cooper Duncan; daughter, Joyce D. Tally of Bear Creek; son, John B. Duncan of Siler City; sister, Katie Harrell of Archdale; nine grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Rocky River Baptist Church Building Fund, 4436 Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

KAREN ANNETTE YATES

Karen Annette Yates, 67, of Pittsboro, formerly of Durham, died Wednesday, (11-12-2008) at the Laurels of Chatham.

A reception for family and friends was held from 6:30 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, (11-19-2008) at Griffin funeral service in Pittsboro.

Mrs. Yates was a native of Geraldine, AL, the daughter of Ernest Emory Yates and Dicie Ellen Cates Yates. She graduated from Shorter College, and retired from Acurex Corp. in Durham. She then taught Adult Education/GED prep for Harralson Co., GA.

Survivors include a daughter, Heather Hadley of Graham; son, Elliot Caldwell of Atlanta, GA; one granddaughter; sisters, Ola Wilson, Naomi Benefield, both of Bowdon, GA, and Linda Thompson of Tallapoosa, GA.

Memorial contributions may be directed to either the National Geographic Society, 1145 17th Street NW, Washington, DC 20036; or to Alzheimer’s Research, Eastern NC Chapter, 400 Oberlin Rd, Ste 220, Raleigh, NC 27605.

MICHAEL ANTHONY HICKS

Michael Anthony Hicks, age 39, of Carthage died Monday (11-17-2008).

funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (11-20-2008) at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation was held Wednesday (11-19-2008) from 6- 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

Mr. Hicks, was a native of Chatham County, a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and was employed by Townsends.

Survivors include his wife, Dana Tucker Hicks; daughters, Ashley Ellis, Hannah Ellis, Austin Hicks; sons, Cody Ellis, Logan Hicks, of the home; father, Bobby G. Hicks of Staley; mother, Carol Smith Hicks of Staley; sisters, Lori Hicks of Bear Creek, Jean H. Whitt of Staley, Tara Reynolds of Robbins; bother, Greg Hicks of Siler City; step-brother, Michael Mabe of Pittsboro; step-sisters, Lori Mabe of High Point and Debbie Lewis of Silk Hope.

DOROTHY ANN FUSSELMAN

Dorothy A. Fusselman, 61, died peacefully Friday, November 14, 2008 at her home in Pittsboro.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, November 21, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St Julia Catholic Church, 210 Harold Hart Road, Siler City. The family will receive friends at the church at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to UNC Hospice, P. O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312 or St Julia Catholic Church. Burial will be private.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Dorothy Fusselman.

She is survived by a brother Laurence Fusselman of Tucson, AZ; a sister Donna Hardy and her husband Curt of Pittsboro; nephews Brian Fusselman of Foothill Ranch, CA and Richard Hardy of Chapel Hill; niece Susan Hardy of Carrboro; and great nephew Kevin Fusselman of Foothill Ranch, CA.

GLENDA LETTERMAN KINDLEY

Mrs. Glenda Letterman Kindley, 63, of Liberty, passed away Friday, November 14, 2008. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 16,

2008 with the Rev. Mark Agan officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at the church and other times, at the home.

Mrs. Kindley was a native of Randolph County. She was a kind and loving mother and grandmother.

Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Ruby Letterman and her husband, Billy Joe Kindley. She is survived by her daughters, Chrystal Staley and husband Gene of Liberty, Cherry Tasista and husband Michael of Winston-Salem; and two grandchildren.

Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty is assisting the Kindley family.

GLENNA HUSSEY MANESS

Glenna Hussey Maness, 93, formerly of Bennett, died Tuesday (11-04-2008) at Carolina House of Asheboro.

Mrs. Maness was the daughter of Charles and Hattie (Maness) Hussey. She was a native of Chatham County, a member of Beulah Baptist and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Burgoyne Maness.

The funeral was held Friday (11-07-2008) at 11:00 am at Beulah Baptist Church in Bennett with the Rev. Curtis Barbery officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She is survived by three sons: Clifton Maness and Ronnie Maness of Bennett, and Donald Maness of Bear Creek; seven grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, and two great-great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beulah Baptist Church, 8454 Howard Mills Road, Bennett, NC 27208.

LILLIE MAE ROGERS

Lillie Mae Rogers, 81, of Sanford, died Tuesday (11-04-2008) at The Laurels of Chatham Nursing Home in Pittsboro.

Funeral services were held Saturday (11-08-2008) at 3:00 pm at Mitchell’s Chapel AME Zion Church, Pittsboro.

BARBARA ANN POSCHEN SHEAN

Mrs. Barbara Ann Poschen Shean, 63, of Pittsboro, died Saturday (11-08-2008) at UNC Hospitals.

Memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday (11-11-2008) at Griffin funeral service in Pittsboro.

Mrs. Shean was a native of Orange County.

Survivors include her husband, Danny L. Shean, and a sister, Shirley P. Sieber of Pittsboro.

RONNIE HACKNEY

Mr. Ronnie Hackney, 57, of Moncure died Friday (10-31-2008) at his residence.

Funeral services were held Friday (11-07-2008) at Christ Church of Deliverance in Moncure with Rev. Zenobia Crump officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include children, Rhonnie M. Hackney, Javier Smith, Xavier Smith, all of Moncure, Yolanda Lassiter Autry of Sanford, Rodney Hackney, Ashley Hackney, both of Fuquay-Varina, Jasmine Crump of Pittsboro; brothers, Carl Hackney, Tony Hackney, James Hackney, Clarence Hackney, all of Moncure, Henry L. Hill of Charlotte; and sisters, Phyllis White, Helen Hill, both of Buffalo, NY; and Mary F. Battle of Sanford.

BETTY SUE GATHINGS GRIFFIN

Betty Sue Gathings Griffin, age 71, of Siler City died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at her residence.

Mrs. Griffin was born May 14, 1937 the daughter of Roy B. and Fannie Mae (Eddins) Gathings. She was a native of Anson County, a 1955 graduate of Lilesville High School, and a retired sales associate. Mrs. Griffin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City. She was preceded in death by her brothers, R. B. Gathing, Lee Gathings; and sisters, Fannie Gathings Goodwin, Margaret Gathings Dutton and Rosa Mae Gathings.

She is survived by her husband: DeWitt Griffin, one daughter: Nancy Griffin of Asheboro, NC and one son: David Griffin of Chapel Hill, NC.; four

sisters: Emma Goodwin of Lilesville, NC, Sara Frances Jones of Lilesville, NC, Mary Virginia Dinkins of Yadkinville, NC, Helen Miller of Greenville, NC and two brothers: Merle Gathings of Lilesville, NC, Barney Gathings of Lilesville, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Friday, November 7, 2008 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC.

The funeral was held Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Ave., Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart and Rev. Jim Wall officiating. Burial followed in Anson Memorial Park, Wadesboro.

LORETTA AUSTIN RUSSELL

Loretta Austin Russell, age 73, of Staley died Tuesday, November 4, 2008.

Mrs. Russell was born November 24, 1934 the daughter of Clarence and Vena (Mauldin) Austin.

Mrs. Russell was a native of Stanley County and retired from Glendale Hosiery. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband: Bob Russell two daughters: Bonita Russell of the home, Pam R. Hayes and husband, Robert of Siler City, NC; grandchildren, Jennifer Hayes of Siler City, NC, Courtney Hayes of Siler City, Christopher Hayes and wife, Toni of Camp Lejeune, NC; great-grandchildren, Alexis Hayes of Siler City and Tariq Siler of Camp Lejeune, NC; one brother: Craig Austin and wife, Ann of Oakboro; sister-in-law, Betty Burleson of Albemarle, NC and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Thursday, November 6, 2008 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC.

The funeral was held Friday, November 7, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Community Baptist Church, 2575 Hamp Stone Road, Siler City with Rev. Johnny Lewis and Rev. Mark Agan officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

RAYMOND McCOY BUTLER, SR.

Raymond McCoy Butler, Sr., age 74, of Bear Creek died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Butler was born September 8, 1934 the son of Reuben R. and Mildred (Dew) Butler.

Mr. Butler was a native of Columbia, South Carolina, a retired truck driver from Pomona Pipe of Gulf and a veteran of the US Air Force. Raymond was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Reuben R. Butler, his mother, Mildred Dew Butler, and a brother, Jimmy Butler.

He is survived by his wife: JoAnn L. Butler, three daughters: Lisa B.

Andrews of Bear Creek, NC, Jan B. Phillips and husband, Richard P. of Bear Creek, NC, Kimberly B. Bishop of Siler City, NC and one son: Raymond McCoy Butler, Jr. and wife, Aune of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters: Earlene Cutter of Columbia, SC, Jane Kinzer of Mineral, VA; step mother, Maeola Butler of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Brandon Butler, Jeremy Diven, Megan Andrews, Derek Andrews, Jason Matthews, Nicholas Bishop; and a special caregiver, Rose Maness.

The family received friends Friday, November 7, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the home of the daughter, Jan and Rick Phillips of Bear Creek. The funeral was held Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Faith Baptist Church, 303 Hillbrook Blvd., Siler City with Rev. Bobby Shutt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
