LEE MONROE SAFRIT

Lee Monroe Safrit, 85, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008. A lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, he was born on March 26, 1923, the son of the late Lollie Emiline Powell and Henderson Monroe Safrit.

He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and Lenoir Rhyne College.

Mr. Safrit served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Mississippi. After a lifelong career in cost accounting, he retired from Western Electric where he worked at Lexington Road and the Guilford Center.

He was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church where he was bass soloist in the Sanctuary Choir as well as a member of the Christian Fellowship Class. He also spent many years as a member of the United Methodist Men.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Julia Ross Brower. Mr. Safrit is survived by a son, Charles Safrit and his wife Bonnie of Siler City; two daughters, Julie Gadd and her husband David of Raleigh, and Dr.

Janice Safrit and her husband Mark Chambers of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Chuck, Amanda, Megan, Adam and Brittany; and two great granddaughters, Caitlyn and Neveah.

The funeral was conducted on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Ardmore United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Funderburk and the Rev. Kari Howard officiating. Interment was at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 South Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 for the benefit of the Sanctuary Choir.

LINDA DOWD GROCE

Linda Dowd Groce, age 67, of 201 E. Olympia Street, Siler City died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at her residence. Mrs. Groce was born July 6, 1941 the daughter of the late William Frank and Carrie (Beal) Dowd.

Mrs. Groce was a native of Chatham County and a retired waitress from Brownie Lou Restaurant. Linda was a member of Rives Chapel Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband: Charles Groce; one daughter, Carman Groce of Siler City, NC; one grandson, Elijah Everwine; two sisters: Alice D. Fox of Siler City, NC, Gail D. Henderson of Ramseur, NC; nieces, Legina Emerson of Bonlee, NC and Kathy Fowler of Siler City, NC; and nephew, Kenny Elixson of Ramseur, NC.

The family received friends Tuesday, November 4, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Rives Chapel Baptist Church, 4338 Rives Chapel Church Road, Siler City with Rev. Larry Soblotne, Rev. Luther Lemon and Rev. J. L. Shoun officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of UNC, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

ROBERT CHARLES E. CARLSON

Robert Charles E. Carlson, 88, of Pittsboro died Tuesday (10-21-2008) at his home.

The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

Mr. Carlson was a native of Jamaica Queens, NY, and served as director of planning in Smithton and Huntington. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Sergeant in the Cavalry.

Surviving are his wife, Muriel E. Carlson; one son, Leif E. Carlson of Pineville; one daughter, Elaine J. Henle of Pittsboro; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Oscar and Mary C. Carlson, and daughter, Arlene McKillop, of Pittsboro.

RICHARD LEE CUNNINGHAM

Richard Lee “Rich” Cunningham, 64, of Siler City, died Wednesday (10-22-2008) at Chatham Hospital, Inc.

A memorial service was held Saturday (10-25-2008) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

Mr. Cunningham was a native of Laredo, TX and worked as a carpenter. He served with the US Marines in Vietnam.

He is survived by his wife, Nora (Bynum) Cunningham; two daughters, Jessica Medlin of Aberdeen, and Amy Brooks Cunningham of Mont-pelier, VT; one brother, Michael Ray Cunningham of Las Vegas, NV; step-daughters, Stephanie Cook of Siler City and Victoria Keck of Granite Falls; step-son, Darryl Lee of San Antonio, TX; and eleven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen Lee Cunningham.

Memorials may be made to DAV Charitable Service Trust, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076.

JOHNSIE LOWRANCE

Johnsie Jackson Lowrance, 79, of Siler City, died Tuesday (10-21-2008) at Sunbridge Nursing Home in Siler City.

The funeral service was conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday (10-25-2008) at Harris Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Siler City. Burial was held at 12 p.m. Wednesday (10-29-2008) at Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico, VA.

She is survived by her children, James Edward Jackson, Sr., Frances Jean Guertin, Henry Grady Jackson and William Reid Jackson; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM HOSAFLOOK

William Gene “Bill” Hosa-flook, 68, of Goldston died Tuesday (10-21-2008) at VA Medical Center in Durham.

The memorial graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday (11-01-2008), at Pleasant Dale Cemetery, Shelbyville, WV.

Mr. Hosaflook, the son of James Bennett and Oneita Hosaflook, was a native of Alexander, WV. He was an Army Veteran and retired from Weyerhauser of Moncure.

Surviving are his wife: Virginia (Hoyumpa) Hosaflook; six daughters, Darlene Gregory of Buckhannon WV, Victoria Rubio of Azusa, CA, Pam Stockfish of Glendora, CA, Charlotte Gadsby of Clarmont, VA, Sonya Dean of French Creek, WV, Billie “Gina” Hosaflook of Glendora, VA; mother, Oneida H. Collins; three sisters, Nora Sayre of French Creek, WV, Sue Sears of Buckhannon, WV, Jackie Bennett of Morgantown, WV; five brothers, Charles Hanline of Goldston, Mike Bennett of WA, James Bennett of French Creek, WV, David Bennett of Buckhannon, WV, Mark Bennett of Morganton, WV; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ALICE WALTERS JOHNSON

Mrs. Alice Walters Johnson, 88, formally of Siler City, NC, went to be with her Lord and her husband, Truman, of 65 years on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Carolina Medical Center Northeast, Concord, NC.

Mrs. Johnson was born July 2, 1920, the daughter of Benjimin and Orpha (Faulkner) Walters. She was a native of Alamance County and a retired homemaker. Alice was a member of Brown's Chapel United Methodist Church.

Aunt Alice had numerous nieces and nephews, all very special to her including Connie Christie, her constant companion and caregiver.

She is survived by one son: Steve Johnson, and wife, Terry of Heath, TX; grandsons, Mark Johnson of Dallas, TX, Stephen Caffey and wife, Jennifer of Marlin, TX; great-granddaughter, Emma and one brother, Joe Walters of Liberty, NC.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 29, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC.

The funeral will be Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 1:30 PM at Brown's Chapel United Methodist Church, 255 Chicken Bridge Road, Pittsboro with Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial will follow in Rocky River Friends Meeting Cemetery, Siler City.

ARLEAN REINHART HALE

Arlean Reinhart Hale, age 46, of Siler City died Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC.

Mrs. Hale was born December 11, 1961, the daughter of Francis J. and Linda (Teufel) Reinhart. Mrs. Hale was a native of Philadelphia, PA and worked as a CNA. She was preceded in death by her mother, Linda Teufel Reinhart, her mother-in-law, Joan Hale and grandmothers, Lillian Reinhart and Charlotte Lucas.

She is survived by her husband: Thomas Richard Hale, Jr. of Siler City; one

daughter: Joanie Davis and husband, Johnnie of Bonlee, NC; grandsons, Justin and Jacob; parents, Frank and Connie Reinhart of Siler City; father-in-law, Thomas Richard Hale, Sr. of Philadelphia, PA; one sister: Karen Beckham and husband, Johnny of Ramseur, NC and one brother: Frank Reinhart, Jr. of Siler City, NC; sisters-in-law, Mary Rose and husband, John of Maryland, Lisa Hale and husband, David of Philadelphia, PA; brother-in-law, Larry Hale and wife, Madeline of Philadelphia, PA; aunt, Sister Rose Christine, S.S.J.; step sister, Julie Reneau and husband, Chris; nephews, Joshua Meeks, Brian Reinhart, Ryan Beckham, Logan Reneau, Johnny Jr. Capozzi, Connor Hale; Nieces, Christy Meeks, Jamie Beckham, Jessica Reinhart, Taylor Reneau, Colleen Capozzi, Rose Marie Crow, Christina Hale, Melissa Hale; aunt, Ida Mae Kursetter of Siler City, NC.

The family received friends Friday, October 24, 2008 from 7:00-9:00 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Saturday, October 25, 2008, 10:30 am, at St. Julia Catholic Parish, 210 Harold Hart Road, Siler City with Father James. Burial will follow in Loves Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

ELLEN COOKE MOORE WILLIAMS

Ellen Cooke “Cookie” Moore Williams, 55, formerly of Centreville and Alexandria, VA, died at her home in Moncure, NC on Sunday October 26, 2008.

In addition to her parents, Pete and Mary Moore of Moncure, “Cookie” is survived by two sons, Andrew Lee Williams of Denver, CO, and Matthew David Williams of Alexandria, VA; two stepchildren, Trisha and Chet Williams of Fountain Inn, SC; a special niece, Jessica Moore of Moncure; two sisters, Jean Sullivan of Raleigh, NC and Mary Davis of Centreville, VA; two brothers, Wayne Moore of Sanford, NC and Ernest Moore of Greensboro, NC. She was preceded in death by a brother, Scott Moore and her special friend and aunt, Janie Rowell.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2008 in the historic Haywood Independent Bible Church in Moncure, NC. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service in the adjacent Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Liver Foundation, 75 Maid-en Lane, New York, NY 10038.

Arrangements are under the care of Griffin funeral service & Cremation of Pittsboro, NC.

LILLIAN EUGENIA BOULDIN VAUGHAN

Lillian Eugenia Bouldin Vaughan, 87, of Hickory, died Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Carolina Rehab Center.

Born February 18, 1921 in Randolph County, she was the daughter of James Frank Bouldin and Elizabeth Creed Bouldin. Lillian was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Vale, and her home church was Emmaus Baptist in Pittsboro.

She retired from Singer Furniture; and was the widow of the Rev. Walter Benson Vaughan, to whom she was married for 52 years.

Survivors include a son, Eugene "Gene" Vaughan and wife Kay of Hudson; daughters, Deborah Smith and Susan Williams, both of Hickory, LaMyra Pearson and husband David of Granite Falls; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Elmer Bouldin, Arthur Bouldin, Raymond Bouldin and Rev. Robert Bouldin, all of Pittsboro.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Lillian was predeceased by her brothers, Edgar, Wilbur, and Charlie Bouldin.

The funeral service was held at 2:00 pm, Monday, October 27 at Emmaus Baptist Church in Pittsboro, with Rev. Steve Moore, Rev. William Kanupp, and Rev. Robert Bouldin presiding. Interment followed in Antioch Baptist Church cemetery in the White Cross community of Chapel Hill. Friends visited with the family from 1:00 - 2:00 pm Monday at Emmaus Baptist Church in Pittsboro.

Visitation was also held from 7:00 - 8:30 pm Sunday at Hickory Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care,

1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.

Arrangements for Mrs. Vaughan are under the Griffin funeral service of Pittsboro and Hickory Funeral Home of Hickory.
