SARAH RACHEL JOYE MARTIN

Sarah Rachel Joye Martin, 89, of Gulf died Wednesday (06-04-2008) at Carolina Beach.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday (06-08-2008) at Loves Creek Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Martin was a native of Robinson County, retired from A. J. Schneierson & Sons as a seamstress, and a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters, Betty Jean Elkins of the home, Ann Rives of Goldston; sons, Alex Clark of Ramseur, Roger Clark of Winston-Salem, Clyde Clark of Siler City; step-son, Tommy Martin of Gulf; brother, H. V. Joye, Sr. of Gadsden, AL; twelve grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Pall bearers were Billy Clark, Adrian Clark, Lee Clark, Dalton Clark, Ethan Clark and Bud Elkins.

Contributions may be sent to N.C. Baptist Assembly, 100 Caswell Beach Road, Oak Island, NC 28465 in her memory.

GEORGE EMZLEY SCOTT

George Emzley Scott, 61 of Staley died Friday (06-13-2008) at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Siler City.

Graveside services and burial were held at 3 p.m. Sunday (06-15-2008) at Tyson’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Gyles Saunders officiating.

Mr. Scott was a native of Chatham County, a self-employed house painter, and attended Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary John Scott of Staley; sons, Glenn T. Scott of Canton, Elvis Moser of Bear Creek; sister, Delena S. Hilliard of Siler City; and four grandchildren.

TRAVIS LAMAR FOXX

Travis Lamar Foxx, 25, of Siler City died Monday (06-09-2008) at Blue Ridge Health Care of Raleigh.

Funeral services were held Saturday (06-14-2008) at First Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Gray officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Foxx was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Chatham Central High School, and a member of First Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Sandra Kay Foxx of Siler City; maternal grandmother, Bernice Scurlock of Pittsboro; and paternal grandparents, Charlie and Jean Foxx of Siler City.

CLARENCE THOMAS “TOMMY” FREEMAN

Mr. Clarence Thomas “Tommy” Freeman, 78, died Friday (06-13-2008) at his home.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (06-17-2008) at Guilford Memorial Park with Rev. Dallas George officiating.

Mr. Freeman was a native of Chatham County, a U.S. Army veteran, a barber, and

a little league baseball coach in Franklinville for several years. He grew up in the Melanchton and Liberty areas and graduated from Grays Chapel High School.

Survivors include his wife, Vallie Cox Freeman of Greensboro; son Rick Freeman of Cedar Falls; sisters, Bertha Lineberry, Gertha Ellington, and Dorothy “Dot” Perry, all of Siler City, Beulah Freeman of Asheboro; and brother, Billy Freeman of Staley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Testament Baptist Church, 1404 W. Vandalia Road, Greensboro, NC 27406; Eastern Randolph American Legion Baseball, 541 Lee Layne Road, Ramseur, NC 27316; or Eastern Randolph High School. 390 Eastern Randolph Road, Ramseur, NC 27316.

BENNY JACOBS GUNTER

Benny Jacobs Gunter, 57, of Sanford died Sunday (06-15-2008) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, (06-18-2008) at Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. Bobby Tyson, Sr. and Rev. Chris Bryden officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Gunter was a native of Lee County, and served in the US Army.

Survivors include his wife, Tammy Cox Gunter; daughters, Lori Gunter Maynor, Hayley Gunter Thomas, both of Sanford; brother, Ronnie Lewis Gunter of Sanford; sister, Ann Gunter Mason of Sanford; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

HOWARD L. VANHORN, SR.

Howard L. VanHorn, Sr., 63, of Bennett, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008, at his home.

Howard was a native of Cuba, NY. He was born June 22, 1944 to Vincent and Bertha VanHorn and was a US Marine Corp Veteran of the Vietnam War from 1964 - 1968. He retired from Moore’s Machine Shop of Bear Creek after 16 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. Howard enjoyed gardening, restoring his 1958 Dodge Power Wagon and 1979 Jeep Renegade and motorcycle riding, but most of all, his joy was his grandchildren, Cody and Haley.

Howard graduated from Cuba Central School in 1964. He later went for a degree in hydraulics and blue print engineering.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Bertha VanHorn of New York; a sister, Jean VanHorn; and a brother-in-law, Alfred Whitcher, Jr.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Whitcher VanHorn of the home; sons, Howard (Howie) and wife, Rachel, Phillip VanHorn of Bear Creek; a nephew that was like a son, Larry VanHorn and wife Angie, of Franklinville; brothers, Mike and wife Barbara, Larry and wife Cora, of Texas, Jim and Bill of NY; sisters, Delores Keech and husband Jerry, of Mississippi, Linda Eldridge and husband Kenneth, of NY and Joan of NY; brothers-in-law, Dusty and wife Wyneita, Tim of NC, Todd and wife Sue, of VA. and Ted of NY; grandchildren, Cody and Haley of Bear Creek, Heather and Brittnay of Franklinville; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be 2 p.m., Thursday, June 19, 2008, at the Smith and Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Gelsthorpe officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park with Military Rites.

The family received friends Wednesday, June 18, 2008 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

MADIE BEAL SCOTT

Madie Beal Scott, 97, of Siler City died Thursday, June 12, 2008 at Hospice Home in High Point.

Graveside services and burial were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Chatham Memorial Park with Rev. Jim Wall officiating.

Mrs. Scott was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Nancy Cox Beal; husband, H.Van Scott; son, Charles Stephen Scott; six brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jean S. Pendergrass of High Point: granddaughters, Mindy Wilkie of Wake Forest, Lisa P. Fenske of High Point, Tracy S. Thomas of Siler City; grandson, Russ Pendergrass of Lexington; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jacqulin W. Beal of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to YMCA, 112 Gatewood Avenue, High Point, NC, 27262; or a charity of choice.

BETTY JEAN FOX ELKINS

Betty Jean Fox Elkins, 75, of Siler City died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday (06-15-2008) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home with burial following in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Elkins was a native of Chatham County and a retired boarder from Glendale Hosiery.

Survivors include her mother, Maude Fox Kimrey of Siler City; daughters, Patricia Cox, Lisa Elkins, both of Staley; sons, Brian Elkins and wife, Sonia of Bear Creek, Danny Elkins of Siler City; grandchildren, Heather Parker and husband, Joseph, Brandon Cox, Kristen Elkins, Cameron Elkins, Dustin Elkins, Chris Elkins, Alexis Elkins, Caitlyn Elkins; and great-grandchildren, Dillon Parker and Corbin Parker.

Visitation was held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

THOMAS HAROLD KIVETT

Thomas Harold Kivett, 78, of Siler City, died Tuesday (06-03-2008) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday (06-06-2008) at Siler City Pentecostal Holines Church with Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mr. Kivett was a native of Chatham County, an Army veteran of the Korean War, and retired from Boling Chair Company. He was a member of Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was an usher and a member of the Adult Sunday School class.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Martin Kivett of the home; daughter, Diane K. Saylor of Graham; sister, Goldie Kivett of Siler City; brother, Hamuel Kivett of Bennett; and a granddaughter.

DEAN NEAL WILSON

Dean Neal Wilson of Davie, FL, died Sunday (06-01-2008) at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL.

Graveside services and burial were held Friday (06-06-2008) at South Fork Friends Meeting Cemetery with Rev. Ricky Sessoms officiating.

Mr. Wilson was a native of Miami, FL.

Surviving is sister, Libby Wilson Hadley of Snow Camp; and brother, Bruce Wilson of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

LLOYD B. ALLEN

Lloyd Braxton “Bunk” Allen, 85, of Ramseur died Monday (06-09-2008) at Universal Health Care.

Graveside services and burial were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (06-11-2008) at Pleasant Hill Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. Clifford Williams officiating.

Mr. Allen was a native of Randolph County, a long-time employee of Craven & Kivett Clothing Store, and a member of Staley Baptist Church where he served as past deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was an Army Veteran of WW II serving in France and Germany. He was a grandfather to 86 foster children over the past 20 years.

Survivors include sons, Gary Allen of Siler City, Larry Allen of Asheboro; sisters, Velna Craven of Ramseur, Grace McPherson of Nashville, TN; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Piedmont Chapter, 1315 Ashley Brook Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or Pleasant Hill Christian Church, 1707 Pleasant Hill Church Road, Liberty, NC 27298.

JOSEPH L. “BUD” SIZEMORE

Mr. Joseph L. “Bud” Sizemore, Jr., 81, of Graham died Monday (06-09-2008) at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Thursday (06-12-2008) at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Graham with Dr. David Kolb officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at Rich & Thompson in Graham on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.

Mr. Sizemore was a native of Chatham County, a veteran of the US Army serving in WW II, and was presently a member of the Alamance County War Memorial Committee. He retired as president of Sizemore Lumber Company and was a trustee of the Southeastern Lumber Association. He was on the board of directors of BB&T and Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Graham, where he served as a deacon, former Sunday school teacher, and held various other positions.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Shepherd Sizemore of the home; daughters, Ms. Donna Sizemore of Greensboro, Ms. Debbie Sizemore of Mebane; son, Joseph L. “Joe” Sizemore III of Snow Camp; brother, William R. “Bill” Sizemore of Graham; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Graham, PO Box 779, Graham, NC 27253; or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

HELEN ALLRED STEPPE

Helen Marie Steppe, 81, of 2701 Moon Lindley Road, Snow Camp died Friday, June 6, 2008 at Care View Rest Home, Snow Camp. Mrs. Steppe was born February 8, 1927, the daughter of the late George Henry and Lily Joy (Fox) Allred.

Mrs. Steppe was a native of Chatham County. She spent many years in New York City in advertising. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joy Fox and George Henry Allred, a brother, James L. Allred. She was married to the late Clarence Steppe of Raleigh. Helen was a graduate of Siler City High School, class of 1944 and Mars Hill College. She had been a resident of Care View Rest Home, Snow Camp for a number of years due to declining health.

She is survived by one daughter, Rebecca S. Poppleton and husband, Dan of Clarksville, TN; two sons, James Steppe and wife, Evelyn of Mason, OH, David Steppe of San Antonio, TX; one sister, Rebecca Allred Sexton and husband, Harlan of Asheboro; grandchildren, Allison Steppe, Cory Stephens; niece, Kathryn Fagg and husband, Phillip of Moravian Falls.

The graveside service will be Friday, June 13, 2008 at 3 p.m. at the Fox Family Cemetery at Rocky River Baptist Church, 4436 Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City with Rev. Greg W. Burriss officiating.
