BETTY ANN PETTY FOGLEMAN

Betty Ann Petty Fogleman, 74, of 1642 Henderson-Tanyard Road, Pittsboro died Saturday, June 7, 2008 at her home. Mrs. Fogleman was born July 1, 1933, the daughter of the late Edward Hale and Victoria Inez (White) Petty.

Mrs. Fogleman was a native of Chatham County and retired from Chatham Mills, Pittsboro. She was a member of Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church.

Betty Ann was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Fogleman.

She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis F. Hancock of Pittsboro, Helen F. Vickrey and husband, Jimmy of Pittsboro, Carrie F. Vickrey and husband, Randy of Pittsboro; one son, James T. Fogleman and wife, Eva of Pittsboro; one brother, Horace Petty of Siler City; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

The family received friends Monday, June 9, 2008 after the service in the church fellowship hall. The funeral was held Monday, June 9, 2008 at 11 a.m.

at Sapling Ridge United Methodist Cemetery, 5016 Silk Hope-Gum Spring Road, Pittsboro with Rev. Jim Murphy and Rev. Rodney Hellard officiating. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

BERTHA YATES CLARK

Bertha Yates Clark, 80, of Pittsboro, died Friday (05-30-2008) in UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday (06-02-2008) at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Mrs. Clark was a native of Orange County, a former employee of Lufkin Rule Company in Apex, and a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Melvin Roy Clark, Danny Clark, both of Pittsboro; brother, Luther Yates, Jr. of Hillsborough; sisters, Nona Knight, Virginia Whicker, Joyce Clark, Phyllis Yates, Deborah Ira, all of Hillsborough; and four grandchildren.

TIMOTHY AUSTIN PARNELL

Timothy Austin Parnell, 2, of Bear Creek died Saturday (05-31-2008) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

Funeral services were held Wednesday (06-04-2008) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bobby Tate officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Survivors include his parents, Jennifer Moody Davis and Timothy Jason Parnell; sisters, Kelsey Lyn Davis, Dannie Leigh Parnell; brothers, Nathan Garrett Davis, Jordan Lee Stanley; maternal grandmothers, Dianne Vazquez of Sanford; paternal grandparents, Robert and Sandra Parnell of Ramseur; maternal great-grandmother, Doris M. Thomas of Siler City; maternal great-grandmother, Evelyn G. Moody of Siler City; paternal great-grandmother, Audrey J. Gentry of Hillsborough.

The family received friends from 10-11 a.m. before the service at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made to the family at 280 Moody Loop Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

JESSIE MORGAN HORTON

Jessie Morgan Horton, 90, of Apex, died Saturday (05-31-2008) at Craven Regional Medical Center.

funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday (06-03-2008) at Bells Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Washington and Rev. Danny Allen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Horton was a native of Chatham County, a textile worker and farmer. A member of Bells Baptist Church, she was in the Jennie Porter Sunday school class.

Survivors include a son, CMSgt. (Ret.) Jimmie H. Horton of Tullahoma, TN; daughter, Rev. Charlene Pierce Guider of New Bern; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

SHIRLEY JANICE SCURLOCK

Shirley Janice Scurlock, 57, of Pittsboro died Monday (05-26-2008) at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday (05-31-2008) at Mitchell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Scurlock was a native of Bronx, NY.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Scurlock of the home; son, Wilbert Williams of Pittsboro; daughter, Tisha Williams of Newark, NJ; sisters, Deborah Jones of Henderson, Vernell Dickson of Bronx, NY, Pearl Dickson of NY; brothers, Jesse Dickson of Bronx, NY; twenty grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

JAMES HENRY SHAW

James Henry Shaw, age 68, of Goldston died Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Mr.

Shaw was born September 6, 1939 the son of Henry Howard and Ethel (Hedrick) Shaw.

Henry was a native of Chatham County and a building contractor. He was a member of Meroney United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Ethel Hedrick Shaw, two brothers, Gene and Marvin Shaw and a sister, Margaret S. Cook.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hilliard Shaw; one daughter, Beth S. Yow and husband Jeff, of Sanford, one son, Marty Shaw and wife Tracey, of Goldston; grandchildren, Heather Shaw, Chris Shaw, Heath Shaw, Matt Shaw, Maggie Yow, Nathan Yow; great grandson, Austin Shaw; five sisters, Mary Causey and husband Gene, of Asheboro, Ethel Minton and husband Ray, of Bear Creek, Louise Dark and husband Wayne, of Siler City, Brenda Hudson and husband Tommy, of Siler City, Linda Hudson of Siler City; several nieces and nephews; special mother-in-law, Berta Hilliard; special brothers-in-law, Jack Hilliard and Danny Hilliard.

The family received friends Friday, May 30, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31,

2008 at Meroney United Methodist Church, 10568 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek with Rev. Jim Whitaker, Rev. David Wade and Rev. Don Daniel officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

D. A. CALHOUN

D. A. Calhoun, long time resident of Chatham County, former director of the Neighborhood Youth Corps, pastor of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church from 1960 to 1971, advocate of civil rights and social justice throughout his life, died December 20, 2007 after a lengthy hospital stay, just missing his 87th birthday.

Born on a tobacco farm near Rocky Mount, NC, D. A., nicknamed “Shine, ”

received his Masters of Divinity with Languages from Southeastern Theological Seminary, having also graduated from Campbell University, Wake Forest University, and the School of Hard Knocks. He valued the pragmatic lessons of real life as equal to or exceeding those of academia.

Margie, his wife of 64 years, remains earth-side along with his children, Beverly and Ronnie, and their respective families with nine children and four grandchildren.

D. A. successfully lobbied the N. C. Legislature for funding to initiate the Alcoholic Rehab in Chapel Hill, still in place today, taught school in Siler City and finished a novel, years in the writing, before he died, which his family plans to work toward getting published.

He will be remembered as a farmer, husband, counselor, thinker, writer, pastor, teacher, prankster, peacemaker, advocate, father, world-class wing shot, philosopher, bass fisherman, buck dancer, naturalist and lover of humanity. He made a difference.

A private family service was held on the family farm where D. A. was born; no other services are planned. In light of today’s economy, D. A. would be the first to say, “Don’t send flowers or contributions to honor me, put it in your gas tank instead and pass an act of kindness forward.”

FRANCES MORGAN ALDRIDGE

Frances Morgan Aldridge, 81, of Siler City died Thursday, May 29, 2008 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Aldridge was born February 16, 1927 the daughter of Arbra and Florence Anders Maney. Mrs. Aldridge was a native of Buncombe County and a retired real estate agent. She was a member of the Siler City Presbyterian Church where she was a former Elder. Frances was a member of the Siler City BPW, the Investment Club and Siler City Country Club.

She is survived by her husband, Victor "Vic" Aldridge, Sr.; one daughter, Kelly Morgan Golden and husband, Richard of Siler City; grandchildren, Morgan, Casey, and Trevor; one sister; JoAnn M. Woodall and husband, Jim of Raleigh; stepson, Thomas Victor Aldridge, Jr. of Whiteville; step daughters, Kaye Aldridge Weldon of Cary, Sue Aldridge Carter of San Antino, TX; nine

step- grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.

The family received friends Sunday, June 1, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 2, 2008 at Siler City Presbyterian Church, 720 W. 3rd St., Siler City with the Rev. Sue Flippin and Rev. Greg Burriss officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

HELEN RIDDLE HILLIARD

Helen Riddle Hilliard, 86, of Goldston, died Friday, May 30, 2008 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City after a brief illness.

Mrs. Hilliard was born March 3, 1922 in Chatham County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy L. Hilliard.

She is survived by a daughter, Deborah H. Egbert and husband Dan; grandchildren, Daniel Egbert and wife Becky, Dawn E. Bailey and husband David. She has one niece, Vickie H. Hutchins and four nephews, Keith Hilliard, Bert Riddle, Bruce Riddle and Tommy Duncan; "special" nieces, Gayle Daniel, Cindy White, Angie Eades and a "special" nephew, Henry Stinson.

Mrs. Hilliard was a long standing active member of the Antioch Baptist Church, 3835 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a charter member of the WMU. She was famous for her Strawberry Short Cakes which she enjoyed baking for church socials. She was an avid gardener and produced prize winning size tomatoes which she shared with friends and neighbors. She liked to read and was an accomplished writer. She published an article in Reminisce Magazine in 2006.

The family received friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2008 at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.The funeral service was conducted at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2008 at Antioch Baptist Church.

GLADYS POWELL FARMER

Gladys Powell Farmer, 96, of Siler City died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Siler City. Mrs. Farmer was born August 13, 1911, daughter of the late William Joseph and Eliza Jane (Crocker) Powell.

Mrs. Farmer was a native of Duncan, SC and a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was a charter member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, and a teacher of the Wren Sunday School class. She held various offices in her local United Methodist Women and became District Treasurer of this organization. Gladys was a member of the Old and Beautiful Bridge Club and taught bridge. She was Past Worthy Matron of Siler City Eastern Star # 9. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Farmer.

She is survived by two daughters: Jane Farmer of Apex, Patsy F. Andrews and husband, Terry, of Siler City; one grandson, Todd Andrews and wife Lauren, of Boca Raton, FL; and one sister, Enola Pugh of Boiling Springs, SC.

The family received friends Wednesday, June 4, 2008 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City. At other times they were at the home of Patsy and Terry Andrews, 418 Pine Lake Drive, Siler City. The funeral will be Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Sykes and Rev. Travis Owen officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 212, Siler City, NC 27344.

Pallbearers were Mike Holt, Ed Spence, Alan Resch, Joe Williams, Mike Ludington and Gib Brooks

ANNA McCANN MAHONEY

Anna McCann Mahoney, of Chapel Hill died at her home on Thursday (05-15-2008).

A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday (05-31-2008) at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill, with Father John Durbin, Celebrant. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery on Legion Road.

Survivors include children Joanne Rock, Kathy Benn, Maureen Gregory, Anne Bunai, Pat Wright, John Mahoney, Teresa Mahoney, Sharon Kirkman, Michael Mahoney and Joyce Felder; brother, Frank McCann; and sister, Jane Whitaker; 32 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
