Howard Primrose Carpenter Sr.
Howard Primrose Carpenter Sr., 91, of New Bern, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Bayview Nursing Center. Memorial service was Tuesday, March 15, at First Presbyterian Church. Entombment was at Greenleaf Memorial Park with military honors and Masonic honors by St. John's Lodge No. 3.
He was a retired florist and owner of Carpenter's Florist for more than 50 years, was a veteran of World War II, and served in the U.S. Army as a captain. He graduated from New Bern High School and attended East Carolina Teachers College, now East Carolina University. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a 50-year member of St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 3.
Surviving: wife, Martha Lois Youngblood Carpenter of the home; son, Howard P. Carpenter Jr. and wife Jan of Raleigh; daughters, Diane Carpenter Best of New Bern, Joy Carpenter Wiley and husband James of New Bern, Martha Carpenter Robinson of Aurora; sister, Mildred Carpenter "Billie" Slater of New Bern; 10 grandchildren, including Dennee B. Griffin of Knightdale; nine great-grandchildren, including Sarah and Paige Griffin of Knightdale.

Pattie Grace Whichard McGuyrt, 65, of Wake Forest, died suddenly Sunday, March 13, 2005. funeral service will be Thursday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at Bright Funeral Home chapel, Wake Forest. Burial will be in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
She was born in Martin County. She worked for Kmart before joining the family business, McGuyrt Produce Co. After 25 years in the family business, she retired and had worked for Wal-Mart the past five years. She was preceded in death by her father, William Henry Whichard.

Opal Rider Trent, 81, died Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Britthaven Nursing Home, Louisburg. funeral service was Monday, February 21, at Bright Funeral Home chapel, Wake Forest. Entombment was in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
She was born in West Virginia, daughter of the late Ida Boner Rider and David Lee Rider. She was retired from the N.C. Department of Revenue. She was married to James Richard Trent who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, James Michael Cutlip.

Sigma Clyde Wall
Sigma Clyde Wall, 81, of Knightdale, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Rex Healthcare after many months of declining health. funeral service was Friday, February 25, at Knightdale Baptist Church. Burial was at New Knightdale Baptist Church cemetery, Knightdale.
He was born May 12, 1923, in Wake County, son of the late Herbert Clyde Wall and Clyde Mae Medlin Wall. He retired with 40 years of service with CP&L; in customer service. He was a faithful member for 54 years at Knightdale Baptist Church and was a member of the Watson Memorial Sunday School Class. He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II.
Surviving: wife, Frances Bunn Wall; sons, Randy Sigma Wall and wife Cathy of Knightdale, Freddy Vann Wall and longtime girlfriend Diane Martin of Knightdale; daughters, Judy W. She was born June 21, 1918, in Wake County, daughter of the late Edward S. Faison and Arthelia F. Faison. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Edward Tart, December 28, 2001; brothers, Edward Faison and Ollie Faison; and special sister, Mamie Brooks.

Harvey "Bill" Thorne
William Harvey "Bill" Thorne, 87, of Dunn, died Friday morning, February 25, 2005, at Betsy Johnson Hospital. funeral service was Sunday, February 27, at Strickland Funeral Home chapel, Wendell. Burial was at Corinth Baptist Church cemetery.
He was born Nov. 26, 1917, in Johnston County, son of the late John "Bud" and Sophronia Pittman Thorne. He was a retired maintenance supervisor with the N.C. Department of General Services. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his sister and brothers, Pauline Denton, and Howard, Archie and Orland Thorne.
Surviving: wife of 60 years and seven months, Mavis Atkinson Thorne; daughter, Sandra Jernigan Holland of Dunn; grandchildren, Tammi Barbour Fitzgerald and husband Joe of Cary, Somar Jernigan Dougherty and husband Brian of Pittsboro; great-grandchildren, Whitney Barbour, Garrett Fitzgerald; brother, E.
