Former Hastings resident, Virginia J. Kerr, 83, of 3016 Colonial Lane, Grand Island, Nebraska, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at St. Francis Skilled Care, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Services will be Saturday, July 28, 2001; 1:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Pastor Julie Bringelson officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.

Virginia J. Kerr was born icon June 21, 1918 in Sutton, Nebraska, to John & Ida (Biegert) Willey.
She graduated from Sutton High School, Sutton, Nebraska in 1936.
In 1938, she graduated from Hastings Beauty Academy, Hastings, Nebraska.
She was a Sergeant in the United States Army, serving during WWII from August 4, 1943 to December 16, 1945.
On May 23, 1944, she married Dean D. Kerr and he preceded her in death in August of 1978.
They lived in North Platte, Nebraska before moving to Hastings, Nebraska where they resided for 45 years.
She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church, Hastings, Nebraska.

Virginia J. Kerr was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dean, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

William M. 'Bill' Barry, Sr.

Rural Hastings resident, William M. ‘Bill' Barry, Sr., of 88, 8535 N. Marion Rd, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at Good Samaritan Center, Wood River, Nebraska.

Rosary service will be Friday, July 27, 2001; 7:30 P.M. at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Doniphan, Nebraska.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, July 28, 2001; 10:00 A.M. at St. Ann's Catholic Church with Father Steve Major officiating.
Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

William M. ‘Bill' Barry, Sr. was born icon March 10, 1913 in Blair, Nebraska to Thomas & Lillian (Pontzius) Barry.
He moved to Hastings, in 1919 and graduated from Hastings High School in 1931.
In 1935, he married Lois McKenna at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney, Nebraska.
The couple then resided near Lebanon, Kansas until 1939 when they moved back to Hastings.
In 1942, they moved to rural Hastings, where they farmed until his retirement in 1976.
Bill was an avid violin player and played for Vaudeville Shows, radio shows as well as the Hastings Symphony for many years.
He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps after graduating from high school and was stationed in Oregon and South Dakota.
He was also a member of the Nebraska National Guard for several years and also was substitute rural mail carrier for several years.
He served as a board member for several years for the Pontious Family Association.
Bill was devoted to his church and his family and was a lector for St. Patrick's and St. Ann's Church since 1964.

William M. ‘Bill' Barry, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, 2 granddaughters and 1 great granddaughter, 3 brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include,

Sheila & Ed Osterhaus - Omaha, NE
Sons & Daughters-in-law:

Shirley Joan (Hilker) Rucker

Shirley Rucker , 64, of 1512 Crestmoor Dr., Hastings, Nebraska, died Sunday, July 22, 2001 at Bryan LGH East Medical Center, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Service will be Thursday, July 26, 2001; 11:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Sam Rathod & Rev. Doug Griger officiating.
Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Shirley Rucker was born icon February 21, 1937 in Furnas County, Nebraska to Albert & Lottie (Ridpath) Hilker.
She attended rural grade school in Furnas & Gosper counties.
She graduated from Holbrook High School in 1954 and McCook Jr. College, McCook, Nebraska in 1956.
She taught school in Wauneta, Nebraska. On May 26, 1957, she married Morland Dean Rucker in Arapaho, Nebraska.
She worked at Gold's Department Store, Lincoln, Nebraska while Morland attended college.
They moved from Red Cloud, Nebraska in 1961 to Hastings, Nebraska.
She worked as the ice cream lady at Hastings Middle School for 11 years and also Good Samaritan Village in housekeeping for 2 years and at Keith's Medical Park Pharmacy for 7 years.
She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church and Homemakers Anonymous Extension Club, Hastings, Nebraska.

Shirley Rucker was preceded in death by her parents.

Joan Laurrie Stroh

Joan L. Stroh, 70, of 1280 South Juniata Avenue, Juniata, Nebraska, died Saturday, June 14, 2001, at Grandview Manor in Campbell, Nebraska.

Services will be Tuesday, July 17, 2001, 10:00 A.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska, with Les and Bonnie Larsen, Ministers, officiating.
Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Joan L. Stroh was born icon March 11, 1931, south of Juniata, Nebraska to Arthur & Ella (Bunde) Grothen.
She graduated from Juniata High School, Juniata, Nebraska, in 1949.
She married Alvin Stroh on June 4, 1960, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as an organist, Sunday School teacher and choir director.
She also was an organist at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rosemont, Nebraska.

Joan L. Stroh was preceded in death by her parents, husband and infant sister.

Selma Josephine Diehm

Former Hastings resident, Selma Josephine Diehm, 102, of Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska, died Saturday, July 14, 2001 at Blue Hill Care Center.

A memorial service will be held in Hastings, Nebraska at a date to be announced.
Interment will be in the Sterling Cemetery, in Johnson County, Nebraska.

Selma Josephine Diehm, daughter of Ferdinand and Anna (Flegler) Diehm, was born icon April 21, 1899 on her parents' farm south of Adams, Gage County, Nebraska.
Her parents emigrated from Germany in the early 1880's.
For several years they lived with friends in the Hopewell Community, Johnson County, Nebraska.
In 1891, they bought a farm in nearby Gage County.
Selma and her siblings were all born icon on this farm.
In 1905, the family moved to a farm in Johnson County near the town of Crab Orchard.
In 1918, her father gave up farming and the family moved to a house in Sterling, Nebraska.
Selma graduated from Sterling High School, Sterling, Nebraska and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska.
She continued her education at the National College of Education in Evanston, Illinois, the University of Colorado at Boulder and at Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado.
Selma's teaching career began in her hometown of Sterling.
Later, she taught at Bayard, Nebraska, Plattsmouth, Nebraska and for 23 years at Longfellow Elementary School, Hastings, Nebraska.
She was a member of the Hastings Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association and a life member of the Nebraska Educational Association.
In 1945, her sister, Julia moved to Hastings and they have lived together ever since.
After retirement, Selma and Julia continued to make their home in Hastings.
In early childhood, Selma united with the Methodist Church, of which she remained a loyal and devout member.
Since moving to Hastings, she has been a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Selma was also a member of the YWCA in Hastings.

Selma was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Mrs. Robert Hillman and two brothers, Gus & Paul.

Survivors include,

Mrs. Clarice Pullen - ID
Mrs. Marvel DeVault - CA
Mrs. Wanda Cartwright - CA
