Gerald Burmood
Gerald E. Burmood, 78, of Grand Island died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Harms will officiate. Mr. Burmood will be cremated following services. Burial will be at a later date in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Burmood was born
on Jan. 5, 1921, at Wood River to George and Winifred (Ward) Burmood. He grew up and was educated in Grand Island.
He married Inez P. Smith on Sept. 18, 1949, at Worms. The couple lived in Grand Island, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 12 years. He then worked for Supreme Foods as a meat cutter for 32 years before retiring in 1983. After his retirement, he began working as a janitor part time for Trinity Lutheran School.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed reading.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jannette Maya of Soledad, Calif., and Judi Pugh and JoAnn Ewoldt, both of Grand Island; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bernice Thuernagle of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Dale.
Rev. Vernon Schroeder
The Rev. Vernon Schroeder, 80, of Grand Island died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, due to renovations at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Jim Keeser, Cole Fowler and Richard Urbach officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Edgar Windfield
Edgar Windfield, 97, of Grand Island died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Karl Ziegler will officiate. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time, with family members present from 11 a.m. until service time, Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church in Worms.
Mr. Windfield was born
on April 15, 1902, on a farm in the Worms area to Thomas and Lydia Windfield. He attended a rural school and later attended Grand Island Business College.
He farmed the land in the Worms area that his parents had purchased in 1898. He lived there with his mother until she died in 1958. He continued to live on the farm until 1989, when he could no longer live alone.
He was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. He was active in the local co-ops, holding various board positions.
Survivors include one brother, Lloyd Windfield of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Ruby Boyce
ORD -- Ruby Boyce, 89, of Ord died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services are pending with Ord Memorial Chapel.
Dorothy Claar
PETERSBURG -- Dorothy Louise Claar, 75, of Petersburg died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in Petersburg. The Rev. Kevin Koch will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion and will continue at 7 p.m. at the church with an 8 p.m. wake service. Further visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to service time Monday at the church.
Mrs. Claar was born
on Jan. 1, 1924, at Petersburg to John J. and Johanna (Ketteler) Wirges. She was educated at St. John's School.
She married Dean Harold Claar on Nov. 23, 1948, at St. John's Catholic Church in Petersburg. They lived in Petersburg. She worked at Froistad's Tavern and the Sullivan Cafe in Albion, Totten's Cafe in Petersburg and as assistant cook at Petersburg Public School.
The couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Claar enjoyed cooking and quilting.
She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Quilting Group. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 334 and was a Gold Star Sister.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Harold of Petersburg; three grandchildren; and four sisters, Bernita Reed of Petersburg, Betty Thompson of Lincoln, Joan (Mrs. Vernon) Schaecher of Lindsay and Ida (Mrs. Cornelius "Corky") Koch of Scottsbluff.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Jack Wirges; and two sisters, Genevieve Daniels and Marie Baumgart.
Wilma Greek
WOLBACH -- Wilma A. Greek, 85, of Wolbach died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Wolbach. The Rev. Ken West will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery at Wolbach.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church, Wolbach Community Foundation or donor's choice.
McIntyre-Jacobsen Funeral Home of Wolbach is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Greek was born
on May 30, 1914, at Elmwood to Fred and Ella Mae (Reeder) Prentice. She attended a rural school near Elmwood and Elmwood High School.
At the age of 17, she came with her family to a farm in Nance County.
She married Cyrus Greek on Feb. 22, 1933, at Fullerton. The couple first farmed north of Cedar Rapids. They returned to the Greek family farm at Wolbach in 1935, moved to the Johnny Smith ranch in 1941 and to the old Kenny farm northeast of Wolbach in 1945. They farmed there until their retirement in 1978.
Mr. and Mrs. Greek also were involved in the trucking business. They moved into Wolbach in 1979. Mr. Greek died in December 1995. Mrs. Greek moved to the Greeley Care Home in July 1999.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Methodist Church Women, served on the Olive District 13 school board for a number of years, was a charter member of the Happy Hour Club, member of American Legion Auxiliary, Wolbach Community Club, Four-Mile Extension Club, served on the Wolbach Village Board for a number of years and taught Sunday school for a number of years.
Her hobbies included cooking, traveling and going to football games.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna (Mrs. Myron) Rother and Shirley (Mrs. Kenneth) Inman, both of Wolbach; one son, Richard of Dakota City; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Prentice of Lexington; and one nephew whom she raised, Gary Stephenson of Colorado.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Prentice; and three sisters, Margaret Hruska, Opal Nielsen and Nellie Stephenson.
Emma Fenster
AURORA -- Emma Fenster, 96, of Aurora died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton with the Rev. George E. Damm officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Barbara Steinke
HASTINGS -- Barbara M. Steinke, 63, of Hastings died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at St. Francis Skilled Care in Grand Island.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings. The Revs. Harold Stromer and Kathleen Kasper will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Steinke was born
on Aug. 8, 1936, at Milwaukee to Edward and Helen Hynnek. She graduated from West Allis, Wis., High School in 1953.
She married Paul Steinke on Oct. 19, 1957, in West Allis, Wis. She completed her study to be a registered nurse at Milwaukee County General Hospital. She received her bachelor of science and master of science at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Mrs. Steinke worked as an office nurse for Dr. Rutt in Hastings and general-duty nurse at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. She started work at Educational Service Unit 9 as a school nurse in 1976 and later worked as school nurse supervisor/diagnostic nurse. She had been in private practice as a professional counselor since 1991. Mr. Steinke died on Aug. 29, 1997.
Mrs. Steinke was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church and PEO. She served on the board of Special Children's Fund of Hastings, on the board and as president of the Adams County Child Development Council, on the board of the Adams County Child and Family Support Team and the South Central Counseling Advisory Council National Board for Certified Counselors.
Survivors include one daughter, Lynn (Mrs. John) Hohlen of Juniata; two sons, Jeff of Woodland Park, Colo., and Mark of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and her mother, of Hastings.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father and one brother.
Dorothy Clark
Dorothy F. Clark, 90, of Grand Island died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Clark was born
on Aug. 22, 1909, at Elyria to Frank and Nellie (Kozial) Wegrzyn. She was educated and grew up in the Burwell area.
She married Harold A. Clark on June 4, 1944, in New York. The couple lived in New York, where she was a retail buyer for 12 stores before retiring in 1965.
Mr. Clark died in 1974. Mrs. Clark moved to Grand Island in 1977.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
