Robert Charles Brinton

Robert Charles Brinton, 83, of Ashland, died Tuesday (June 23, 1998) at Hearthstone in Medford. The memorial service will be held in Monmouth, Ill.

He was born Aug. 22, 1914, in Monmouth.

On June 26, 1944, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he married Dodie Harvey, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in April 1997 from Green Valley, Ariz.

Mr. Brinton, a metallurgical engineer, was vice president and senior executive engineer with the Davy McKee Corp. in San Mateo, Calif.

He was a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and a 50-year member of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.

Mr. Brinton also enjoyed traveling, gardening and reading.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Robert A., Milpitas, Calif.; a daughter, Susan Lyn Brinton, Arcata, Calif.; and two grandchildren. A brother, Albert, died Dec. 29, 1997.

May Poindexter Stahl

May Poindexter Stahl, 93, formerly of Medford, died Monday (June 29, 1998) in Monterey, Calif. Her home was in Monterey. No service is planned.

She was born May 15, 1905, in Cherokee City, Ark.

In 1920, she married Charles Franklin Poindexter, who preceded her in death. They lived in Detroit, Mich., for eight years, then took an extended vacation to Oregon. They decided to stay when the stock market crashed in October 1929.

The Poindexters homesteaded on New Hope Road in Grants Pass.

In the 1940s, she was head cook at the Riverside School in Grants Pass.

In 1951, she married Henry Fred Stahl and moved to Klamath Falls, living there about six years before moving to Medford. He preceded her in death.

She was a sales assistant in the ladies ready-to-wear department at Mann's, a department store, which later became Miller's Department Store. She retired from Miller's in 1974.

Mrs. Stahl, a 60-year member of the Rogue River Valley Grange in Grants Pass, who also its oldest member. She was a 40-plus-year member of the Eagles Lodge and a member of Lady Elks. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and telling stories of her life.

Survivors include a daughter, Carrol Patterson, Pacific Grove, Calif.; a son, Tom Poindexter, Yuma, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A son, Victor Poindexter, died in 1981. Eight siblings also preceded her in death.

Anna Marie Early

The graveside service for Anna Marie Early will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Evergreen Cemetery, Yreka, Calif.

Mrs. Early, 75, of Redding, Calif., died Sunday (June 28, 1998) in Vacaville, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to Del Norte Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, 5401 South Bank Road, Crescent City, CA 95531 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 9750.

She was born Anna Marie Jessel on April 2, 1923, in Englewood, Tenn. The family moved to Ashland in 1933.

Mrs. Early graduated from Ashland High School in 1941 and attended Marcus Whitman College.

On March 10, 1946, she married Robert Benjamin "Ben" Early, who preceded her in death.

They operated a dry cleaning business in Crescent City, Calif., Medford and later in Yreka.

Mrs. Early returned to school and became a certified myotherapist and later a hypnotherapist. She practiced in Virginia and Washington, D.C., until November 1997.

She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, Del Norte Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Honey Lake Court Order of the Amaranth, Daughters of the Nile and Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors include three daughters, Norma Early, Redwood City, Calif., Susan Early, Redding, and Ava Early, Redding; three sons, Mike, Ashland, Patrick, Merced, Calif., and Lorne, Vacaville, Calif.; three sisters, Alma Jefferson, Medford, and Edna Taylor and Mary Sanderson, both Pasco, Wash.; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles; a sister, Etta Herra; and a brother, Joe Jessel.

Arrangements: Girdner's Funeral Home, Yreka.

Evan Henry and Dolores Schuette

Services for Evan Henry and Dolores Schuette will be held Wednesday morning in Ashland.

The Ashland couple, who had collected master bridge points in all 50 states, were earning points in the Canadian provinces when they were killed Wednesday (June 24, 1998) in a car accident near Norton, New Brunswick.

They maintained homes in Ashland and Cathedral City, Calif.

The funeral Mass for Dolores Schuette, 64, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland. The memorial service for Evan Schuette, 79, and Dolores Schuette will follow at 11:30 a.m. in Lithia Park at the Cotton Memorial, Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Evan and Dolores Schuette Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 158, Ashland, OR 97520.

They were married in 1984 in Los Gatos, Calif., and lived in Cupertino, Calif., until 1991.

Mr. Schuette was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Ableman, now Rock Springs, Wis. He was a 1940s graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and did graduate work at Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Schuette was a member of Chi Epsilon, Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Phi and Pi Mu Epsilon, all honorary engineering and mathematics fraternities.

She was born Dolores Kibbee on Sept. 25, 1933, in Havre, Mont. She was a 1978 graduate of San Jose State University. In Sunnyvale, Calif., she taught for two years, then worked for Advanced Micro Devices for more than 10 years. She lived in Switzerland from 1963 to 1969.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church and a volunteer with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Tudor Guild.

Mrs. Schuette is survived by two sons, Philip Wood, Santa Clara, Calif., and David Wood, Campbell, Calif.; two daughters, Helene Wood, Newtown, Pa., and Ruth Lacey, Waitsfield, Vt.; three sisters, Barbara Libby and Carol Hansen, both Lynnwood, Wash., and Margaret Martin, Vancouver, Wash.; and a brother, Ray Kibbee, Londonderry, N.H.

Mr. Schuette is survived by two daughters, Karin Scorby, Tigard, and Marcia Bhide, Milpitas, Calif.; a son, Evan "Skip," Hillsboro; a brother, Roger, Rockford, Ill.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Pearl F. Ferris

The funeral for Pearl Florence Ferris will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2900 Juanipero Way, Medford. Bishop Ronald Drake will officiate. Entombment will follow in Memory Gardens Memorial Park mausoleum.

Mrs. Ferris, 86, formerly of Medford, died Friday (June 26, 1998) in Snohomish, Wash. She had suffered several strokes recently.

She was born Pearl Florence Cubberly on Dec. 18, 1911, in Salt Lake City. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1920, where she graduated from Franklin High School in 1930.

On Feb. 27, 1932, in Ventura, Calif., she married William Sherman Ferris, who died in 1976.

During the 1940s, they owned and operated Ferris Mortuary in Glendale, Calif., then in Vallejo, Calif., published the Vallejo Free Press.

They lived in Santa Rosa and Petaluma, Calif., before moving to Medford in 1950.

In 1953 they founded and developed Memory Gardens Memorial Park Inc., and constructed Memory Gardens Funeral Home in 1960. After her husband's death, Mrs. Ferris became president of the corporation and was active in the business until it was sold in 1987. The couple also developed and operated Blue Spruce Mobile Estates in Medford.

The couple enjoyed dancing and participated in exhibition dancing in both Medford and California. She enjoyed flower gardening and entertaining.

Mrs. Ferris joined the Medford Crater Lions Club Auxiliary in 1951, then was a charter member of the Medford Crater Lioness Club, holding several positions. Her volunteer work included many hours at the Lions Blind Center.

A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was involved in its Relief Society and choir.

When her health started failing, she moved to Washington in 1992, first to live with a son in Olympia, then with a daughter in Snohomish.

Survivors include two sons, Paul, Medford, and Clair, Olympia; three daughters, Audrey Nielsen, Hillsboro, Katherine Marshall, Salt Lake City, and Sharon Robison, Snohomish; a sister, Emily Reed, Santa Rosa; 22 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren. A son, two brothers, and seven sisters preceded her in death.

Friends may pay their respects from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the church.

Wayne D. Hite

Friends and relative of Wayne D. Hite will gather to celebrate his life at noon July 4 at the home of his son, Ralph, at 4022 Dry Creek Road, Medford.

Mr. Hite, 69, formerly of Medford, died Saturday (June 20, 1998) in Copper River, Alaska. His home was in Wasilla, Alaska.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Rifle Association, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030-9400.

He was born Dec. 31, 1928, in Medford, a son of Ruben and Georgia Hite. He grew up in Phoenix, graduating from Phoenix High School and attended Southern Oregon College.

In October 1943, in Phoenix, he married Elizabeth Marshall, who survives.

Mr. Hite was a partner in Hite Bros. Logging in Medford from 1960 to 1980. After moving to Wasilla in 1981, he was a heavy equipment operator for Nielson Construction and Howdie Investments until retiring in 1991.

The couple enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Ralph, Medford, Max, La Pine, and Scott, Bow, Wash.; a daughter, Loys Hawkins, Medford; two brothers, Ralph, Phoenix, and Max, Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Audrey Kayler, Anacortes, Wash., and Georgia Cutburth, Lacey, Wash.; and nine grandchildren.

Arrangements: Valley Funeral Home, Wasilla.

James D. Terry

The memorial service for James D. Terry will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Christian Church of Ashland. Bob Friend, pastor, will officiate.

Mr. Terry, 65, of Medford, died Tuesday (June 16, 1998) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Dubs Cancer Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Oct. 23, 1932, in Neosho, Mo.

On March 31, 1972, in St. Joseph, Mo., he married Kyla Wallace, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1974.

Mr. Terry worked for Phillips Roxyanne in St. Joseph. He was a truck driver for Orley's Wood Stoves and worked at Harry and David for seven years in several departments.

He was a former member of the Ashland Moose Lodge and American Legion and enjoyed hunting, fishing and bingo.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Joi Ellis and Shiela White, both Medford, and Bunny Rae Terry, Savannah, Mo.; three sons, James Jr. and Tony Annis, both Ashland, and David, Medford; two stepsons, Robin Meyers, St. Joseph, and Bruce Meyers, Savannah; two brothers, John Wallace, Ashland, and Virgil, Hemple, Mo.; five sisters, Peggy Kline, Medford, and Pearl Campbell, Joann Spencer, Glenna Hiatt and Shirley Sprout, all St. Joseph; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A brother, Gerald, preceded him in death.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou Chapel, Medford.
