Mrs. Thelma Bruce Burrell

Funeral services for Mrs. Thelma Bruce Burrell, 84, of 3727 Rowesville Road, Rowesville, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 30, 2007, in the Glover's Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg, with the Rev. James Tendell officiating. Burial will be in the Sandy Run Cemetery in Bowman.

Thelma Bruce Burrell, daughter of the late Ms. Pauline Bruce, was born on January 15, 1923 in Bowman. She departed this life on Thursday, October 25, at her residence.

She completed Bowman High Roseward High School. Thelma left Bowman in the 1940s and moved to Philadelphia, Pa. She was united in marriage to Gilbert Burrell Sr. and from this union, one son was born. She retired from Willis Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. She then moved back to Bowman in 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Burrell Sr.; one son, Gilbert Burrell Jr. and a grandson, Rodney Daniel Bruce.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Daniel (Joann) Bruce of the home; sister, Thelma (Gracier) Cliffin of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Gerome (Mable) Bruce of Philadelphia, Pa.; two special aunts, Rebecca Bruce of Philadelphia, Pa., and Racheal Montgomery of Orangeburg; two granddaughters, Patrici Bruce of Hartford, Conn., and Janice (Al) Carmichael of Titusville, Fla.; four great-grandchildren; two adopted daughters, Betty Jean Haynes of Philadelphia, Pa. and Zoe R. Rhodes of Rowesville; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Friends may call at the residence and at Glover's Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

George Watson Garrick

Funeral services for George Watson Garrick will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 30, 2007, in the Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church in Cope, with burial in the church cemetery with Military Honors, directed by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg.

Memorials may be made to the S.P.C.A., P.O. Box 1584, Orangeburg, SC 29116.

George Byrne

George Byrne, 82, died Monday, October 29, 2007, at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 1, at Orangeburg Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Appleget officiating.

Mr. Byrne was born in Buffalo, N.Y., a son of the late George Byrne and Margaret Spicer Byrne. He was retired from Eastman Kodak Company and was a member of Orangeburg Lutheran Church. He enjoyed golf and bowling and was known for his quick wit and sharing his political views. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Taylor Byrne of the home; daughter, Kathleen Hazen and husband, James, of Columbus, Ohio; son, David Byrne of Rochester, N.Y.; brother, Arthur Byrne of Buffalo, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Pamela Cobb and Craig Rose; four great-grandchildren, Lauren and John Cobb, and Alaina and Brynna Rose.

The family will receive friends following the service in the Parish Hall.

Memorials may be made to Orangeburg Lutheran Church, 610 Ellis Ave., Orangeburg, SC 29115.

Dukes-Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg is in charge of arrangements.

Harry James Monroe Sr.

Harry James Monroe Sr., 70, of 1654 Providence Road, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, October 19, 2007, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Rita Gartman officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Orangeburg.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

Mr. Monroe was born September 20, 1937, in Orangeburg, a son of the late John Monroe and the late Macie Hall Monroe. He served in the U.S. Army and was retired president from Communications Workers of America in Gaston.

Survivors include four sons, Harry Monroe Jr. and Judy Stokes of St. Matthews, Daniel and Stephanie Monroe of Pelion, Bobby Monroe and Deborah Brown of Bluffton, and Edward Monroe of Orangeburg; a daughter, Mary and Lee Gurganus of Hilton Head; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; a half brother, Dan Monroe of Radford, Va.; and special friends, Judy Stokes and Deborah Brown.

Friends may call at the residence, 1654 Providence Road, Orangeburg and at the funeral home. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home Inc.

Kathryn Shaffer Patrick

Shirley Kathryn Shaffer (Kathy) Patrick, 68, wife of Joseph R. Patrick of 102 Woodland Ave., Harleyville, died Wednesday, October 17, 2007, in a Charleston Hospital after a brief illness.

Furneral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 20, in the Bryant Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Thompson Cemetery, Dorange.

Pallbearers will be Mark Mosley, Joshua Mosley, David Shaffer, Lee Powell, Ty Shaffer and Chris Shaffer.

Kathy, as she was affectionately known, was born July 3, 1939, in Varnville, a daughter of the late Clevie and Polly Connelly Shaffer. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and was known by all for her kind heart and generous soul. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph Richard Patrick of Harleyville; a daughter, Charlene Mosley and her husband, Donnie of Hampton; stepdaughter, Renee Scruggs and her husband, Ross of St. George; s.jpgons, Keith Patrick and wife, Kelly of Reevesville and Ernie Wesner of St. George; sister, Doris Keller of Reading, Pa.; brothers, Ralph Shaffer and his wife Linda of Hampton and Ray Shaffer of San Bernardino, Calif., and seven grandchildren and one very special great-grandson.

Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Deacon George Son Gibson

Funeral services for Deacon George "Son" Gibson, 77, of 166 Rabbitt Trail Circle, North, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2007, at Jerusalem Baptist Church in North, with the Rev. Monroe Danley Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

Deacon Gibson died Sunday, October 14, at his residence.

He was a son of the late George Gibson Sr. and the late Lillie Gibson.

He is survived by his wife, Queen Ella Dykes Gibson; 12 children; two brothers; five sisters; 47 grands; 48 great-grands.

Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, 7134 North Road, North.

W. B. Crumel Funeral Home of North is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.

Winston Jamison

Winston Jamison, 55, of 709 Harvest Court, Vance, died Sunday, October 21, 2007, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Funeral services will be announced by Eutawville Community Funeral Home of Eutawville.

Ms. Diane Jefferson

Ms. Diane Jefferson, 54, of Calhoun Convalescent Center, St. Matthews, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007, following an extended illness.

Funeral plans will be announced by Simmons Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Friends may call at the residence of her daughter, Barbara Ann Jefferson, 149 Devine Ct., Orangeburg, and at the funeral home.

Mrs. Amanda Josephine Jones

Mrs. Amanda "Josephine" Jones, 66, of 1319 St. Ann St., died Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at the Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Funeral plans will be announced by Simmons Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Friends may call at the residence of her daughter, Rose Jones, 1319 St. Ann St., and at the funeral home.

Alkeem Jamison

Alkeem Jamison, 4, of 426 Glenfield, Apt. D-13, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, at Palmetto Health Richland following an extended illness.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Glover's Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.

Sara Kemmerlin

Entered into eternal rest Tuesday, October 16, 2007, Sara Jane Wiles Kemmerlin, widow of Clarence W. Kemmerlin. Residence, North Charleston, South Carolina. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service in North Charleston United Methodist Church, at 11 a.m., Friday, October 19, 2007. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. Friends may call at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Greenridge Road Chapel, this Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Born October 14, 1916, in Elloree, Mrs. Kemmerlin was the daughter of Lucius A. and Leila Jane Rickenbaker Wiles. She was a cafeteria worker with the Charleston County School System and was an active member of North Charleston United Methodist Church, the Willing Workers Sunday School class and the Frie-ip class, as well as the Abrams/Rogers Circle.

Surviving Mrs. Kemmerlin are two sons: David Kemmerlin and wife Genele of Cheraw, and Randall Kemmerlin and wife Pat of Hanahan: her sister: Dell Wimberly of Reevesville; three grandchildren: Stefanie Ellison and husband Dave, Bryan Kemmerlin and wife Amy and Jennifer Kemmerlin; four great-grandchildren: Jackson Ellison, Suzanna Ellison, John Ellison and Tyler Kemmerlin. Three brothers, Mack Wiles, Buster Wiles, Boyce Wiles, two sisters, Alma Etheredge and Helen Wiles, an infant sister, Leila Maybell Wiles and an infant brother, John Lewis Wiles, all preceded Mrs. Kemmerlin in death.
