Mrs. Lizzie M. Williams

Mrs. Lizzie M. Williams died Saturday, October 20, 2007.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 27, in the Life Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church, 361 Jackson St., Barnwell.

Survivors include three daughters, Lela Smith, Sheldonia Williams and Dessie Bryant; two sons, Willie Williams and Donnie Williams.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lebby Funeral Home of Barnwell.

Lebby Funeral Home of Barnwell is in charge of arrangements.

John Johnston

John Johnston, husband of Anne Jagger Johnston, of St. George, entered into eternal rest on the morning of Sept. 16, 2007.

The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Johnston are invited to attend the funeral service of the former in St. George United Methodist Church, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, officiated by Dr. Frank Larisey, Dr. Wash Belingia and Dr. Ernest Mellor, Jr. Interment will be in the St. George Cemetery.

Friends may visit at the home, 306 Johnston St., St. George. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Northwoods Chapel, North Charleston.

Mr. Johnston was born March 22, 1927, in St. George, the son of Dr. McRae Bright Johnston, DDS, and Jennie Kirkland Johnston. Mr. Johnston was graduated from St. George High School and received his bachelor of science degree at the University of South Carolina. He retired as the regional branch manager for General Motors after 46 years. He was the director of the first St. George Development Corp, instrumental in founding the Lourie Theater Corp., was a charter member of the Lourie Theater Board of Directors and was vice president in charge of operations. Recently he became vice president emeritus and chair of the Annual Fund Drive. Mr. Johnston was a member of the St. George Rotary Club, the Huguenot Society of S.C., charter member of the Upper Dorchester County Historical Society, life member of the University of South Carolina Alumni Association, president of the Johnston Family Reunion, former president of the Businessmen's Club of St. George and treasurer of the Board of Directors of the St. George Cemetery. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Orangeburg, and an associate member of St. George United Methodist Church in St. George.

He is survived by his wife of St. George; a son, John David Johnston, Jr. and his wife Carol of Columbus, Ga.; a daughter Anne Johnston Gregg of Columbia; two sisters, Jennie Johnston McMahan and her husband E.O. McMahan of St. George and Sarah Allen Johnston Fanning of Columbia; six grandchildren, Martha and Maggie Johnston of Columbus, Ga., Somers Gregg, William Gregg, John David Johnston Gregg, Alec Gregg of Columbia; a sister-in-law, Laura Shepard Johnston of St. George, Richard "Dickie" Minus, Keith Mack Tyner, George Lawrence Fisher, James Davis Green Jr., William Nettles Green, Harry McCullough Mims, Harry McCullough Mims III and Burwell Deas Manning III will be pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lourie Theatre, P.O. Box 584, St. George, SC 29477.

James Bradley

James Bradley, of 1360 Campus Drive, died Thursday, September 20, 2007, at his residence.

Funeral services will be announced by Al Jenkins Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.

Mary Lurline Sweatman Dahler

Funeral services for Mary Lurline Sweatman Dahler will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, in the Highland Baptist Church in Orangeburg, with burial in the Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri County, 166 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 100, Columbia, SC 29210 or to Highland Baptist Church, P.O. Box 2529, Orangeburg, SC 29116.

Harry James Monroe Sr.

Harry James Monroe Sr., 70, of 1654 Providence Road, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Funeral services will be announced by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg.

Dennis Rozzell Betts

Dennis Rozzell Betts, 89, of 1000 Live Oak Drive, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at The Amos Chapel at The Oaks, with the Rev. Kermit Shrawder and the Rev. Judson A. Jordan officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville.

Mr. Betts was born in Humboldt, Tenn., a son of the late Robert Christopher and Ida Mae Forsythe Betts. He was a graduate of Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y., and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. hH was a Navy veteran of World War II, was employed by the Celanese Corp. of America as a mechanical engineer for 26 years, was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Orangeburg. Mr. Betts was predeceased by a sister and brother.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Josephine Berly Betts of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Peter S. (Susan) Landstrom of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Miss Sara Ann Betts of Greenville.

The family suggests memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 650 Summers Ave., Orangeburg, SC 29115 or to The Residential Assistance Fund at The Oaks, P.O. Drawer 327, Orangeburg, SC 29116.

Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Col. James C. Smith, USAF, (Retired)

Col. James C. Smith, USAF, (Retired), 91 of Wayne, W.Va., passed away at his residence on Saturday, October 27, 2007.

Rev. Leo Gibson, Pastor Hamlet Don Smith, and Rev. Keith Allen Hall will conduct funeral services on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Reger Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at the Smith Family Cemetery, Buffalo Creek Road. Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Col. Smith was born on May 4, 1916, in Centerville, W.Va., the son of the late Hamlet and Caroline Virginia Hutchinson Smith.

In addition to his parents, his wife of 49 years preceded him in death, Betty Lee Lavender Smith; two daughters, Peggy Elaine Moore and Marjorie Lynn Hall; one grandson, James Wallace Ferman; seven brothers, Clifford, Pascal, Sankie, Golden, Ernest, Walter Lee, and Merril Smith; one sister, Nellie Haynie.

Col. Smith entered the U.S. Army Air Corp in June 1942 as a private and graduated from the Air Force Cadet Program as a 2nd Lt. in March 1943. Served in North African Theater of operations during WWII and Korea during the Korean Conflict for 18 months. Decorated with the Bronze Star, Air Force Commendation medal with three oak leaf clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, European Africa Middle East campaign ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, Reserve Officers Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Korean Campaign Ribbon with seven battle stars, National Defense Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the United Nations Ribbon. Served in Alaska, Caribbean, Korea, Europe in Germany and Italy.

Promoted to Colonel in Regular Air Force in 1963. Retired May 1967 while serving in the Pentagon. Graduated from the University of Maryland with high honors with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church and a member of the US Air Force Association.

Col. Smith was the first Air Force instructor for the Junior ROTC program for Orangeburg School District Five, Wilkinson High School.

Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Michael J.F. Smith and Pat White of Richmond, Va.; two daughters and son-in-law, Suanne Ferman of Wayne, W.Va. and Sharon Lee and Sinkler Boone of Orangeburg; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one bother and sister-in-law, Clair Shadwell and Myrtle Smith of Huntington, W.Va.

A special thanks to nephew Gary Valee Smith and Dennis and Patty of Hospice.

Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Sunday and 10:00 a.m. until service time at the Reger Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington.

Mrs. Thelma Nix Bryant

Mrs. Thelma Nix Bryant, of Atlanta and formerly of Denmark, died October 25, 2007, in Atlanta.

The funeral will be held at Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Chapel Baptist Church in Barnwell.

Mrs. Bryant was the wife of the late Deacon Malachi Bryant.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Central Baptist Church in Denmark.

Lebby Funeral Home of Denmark is in charge of arrangements.

Anna Loretta Ret Benjamin McCoy

Anna Loretta "Ret" Benjamin McCoy, 63, of Bronx, N.Y., formerly of Cameron, died in Bronx, N.Y.

Granby Funeral Home of Bronx, N.Y. is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Friends may call at the residence.

Ann Clanton

Ann M. Clanton, 81, died Sunday, October 28, 2007, in an Orangeburg hospital.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 30, in the St. George Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Clay Shook officiating. Burial will be directed by Bryant Funeral Home.

Mrs. Clanton was born December 4, 1925, in Savannah, Ga. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in St. George.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Ann Futch and grandson, Timothy Futch, both of Walterboro.
