Johnnie West Primus

Johnnie (West) Primus, 65, of 1114 Second Texas Road, St. George, died October 29, 2007, at his residence.

Funeral services will be announced by Stevens Funeral Home of St. George.

Friends may call at the residence or at the funeral home.

Vernetta L. Green

Funeral services for Vernetta L. Green, 56, of 685 Highway 15 South, St. George, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 31, 2007, in the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Walterboro, with the Rev. Wayne G. Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Live Oak Cemetery in Walterboro.

The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Vernetta L. Green was born May 1, 1957 in Walterboro, to Thelma Carter Skipwith Burke. She was reared by Leanese Marshall and Willeard Marshall.

She leaves to cherish her memories, four sons, Lamont Green, Nicholas Green, Brian McKinley Davis and Stanley Hodges, all of St. George; two brothers, Frederick Carter Sr. of Waterbury, Conn. and the Rev. Harry Chapman of Walterboro; four sisters, Doris Bray of Utica, N.Y., Mary Lawrence, Vanessa (Neil) McDaniel and Harriet (Johnnie) Pringle, all of Waterbury, Conn. and a host of other relatives and friends.

Friends may call at the residence or Stevens Funeral Home of St. George.

Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with a wake service from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ethel Glenn Jones

Mrs. Ethel Glenn Jones, 50, of 306 Charles St., Branchville, died Saturday afternoon at the Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Funeral plans will be announced by Bethea's Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.

Herman Tyler

Funeral services for Herman Tyler, 60, of 591 Good Hope Road, Cope, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 17, 2007, in the Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Norway, with the Rev. N. A. McNeal officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

Mr. Tyler died Tuesday, September 11.

He was born February 24, 1947 to the late Cliff and Eula Lee Tyler. Herman graduated from Norfield High School. He worked for the Shecut family business for over 20 years.

He leaves to cherish his memories, four sisters, Elizabeth Tyler and Gloria Tyler of Cope, Vinnie (Clyde) Ryant of Cordova and Lillian Frazier of New York; sour sisters-in-law, Peggy Tyler of Norway, Margie Tyler and Mattie Tyler of Orangeburg and Luevenia Tyler of Columbia; one aunt, Winnie Isaac of Maryland and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at W. B. Crumel Funeral Home of North.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.

Virginia Alfair Simmons

Funeral services for Virginia Alfair Simmons, 73, of 905 Dukes Street, St. George, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at New Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jerry L. Lane officiating. Burial will be in the St. Luke Cemetery.

Mrs. Simmons died October 27, at Trident Medical Center in Charleston after an extended illness.

She was born July 2, 1934, the daughter of the late Joe and Ida Myers Brown. She attended the public schools of Dorchester County. She joined the St. Luke United Methodist Church at an early age. She continued to serve the Lord at New Grace United Methodist Church faithfully until her health failed. Virginia had four brothers and seven sisters that preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories, her loving and devoted Herbert J. Simmons Sr. of St. George; four daughters, Mazie Brown of Charlotte, N.C., Irene Simmons of Rowesville, Dorothy Jenkins and Margaret (Walter) Jones of St. George; four sons, James (Maybeline) Simmons, John (Sarah) Simmons, Herbert (Pam) Simmons Jr., all of St. George, Derrick (Angela) Simmons of Orangeburg; five brothers-in-law, Ben (Corrie) Simmons, Allen (Marie) Simmons of Walterboro, Leroy (Ollie Mae) Simmons, all of St. George, Joseph (Marie) Simmons of Walterboro and Aldoph Simmons of Jersey City, N.J.; 25 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, the entire staff of the St. George Nursing Care Center, other relatives and friends.

Ling Funeral Home of St. George is in charge of arrangements.

The family and friends viewing will be held Monday, October 29, 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ruth Carter Poole

Ruth Carter Poole, 84, of 303 Willing Lakes Court, died Saturday, October 20, 2007, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, in the Dukes-Harley Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Mike McLean officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Poole was born in Hilda, a daughter of the late Angus and Lillian Hutto Carter. She was a retired bookkeeper for Parts Supply Company in Orangeburg. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Orangeburg, the Lydia Sunday School Class, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and a member of the Eastern Star. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion. She was the widow of Richard D. Poole Sr. and was preceded in death by a son, Richard D. Poole Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Carter Poole and wife, Elaine of Charlotte, N.C. and Angus Poole of Orangeburg; two daughters, Martha P. Blizzard and husband, Wilbert of Lugoff and Kitty P. Butler and husband, Steve of Orangeburg; grandchildren, Ricky Poole, Lisa P. Hall and husband, Richie, Chris P. McGee and husband, Jimmy, Steve Poole and wife, Dana, Lynn Blizzard, Robin Blizzard and wife, Amy, Anne-Marie Poole, Neil Butler, Brett Butler; great-grandchildren, Chase Hall, Pierce Hall, Brandon Evans, Madison McGee, Hunter, Hannah, and Mac Blizzard, Addison and Lauren Poole; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Hall and Becky Bonnette of Springfield, Jean Carter of Barnwell and Ruby Till of Orangeburg; a special dear friend, Berdine Valentine.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday evening at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Steve and Kitty Butler, 2025 Indigo Drive, Orangeburg.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Palmetto Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202-7044 or to The Caregivers of First Baptist Church of Orangeburg, 1240 Russell Street, Orangeburg, SC 29115.

Louis Stokes

Funeral services for Louis "Jo Louis" Stokes, 72, of 113 Mozell Lane, Bowman, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2007 in the Bowman Temple Church of God in Christ in Bowman, with the Minister Tyrone Dantzler and Elder Willie Haigler Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Bowman Temple Cemetery, Tombstone Road.

Active pallbearers will be Jerrell Dantzler, Johnny Dantzler, Tyrone Fairey, Daniel Glover, Shawn Guinyard and John Seals.

Mr. Stokes died Wednesday, October 17, at his residence.

He was born April 26, 1935, in Cameron, son of the late Jessie James Stokes Sr. and Marie Johnson Stokes. He received his education at Goodman School in Cameron. He was employed as a farmer and a logger during his early age. He affiliated himself with Felderville AME Church of Providence, Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Rowesville and later joined Pineville United Methodist Church in Bowman. His favorite hobbies were fishing, gardening and dancing. He was joined in holy matrimony to Lelia Mae Guinyard Stokes 47 years ago. She preceded him in death in addition to two brothers, George and Jesse James Stokes Jr. and two sisters, Frances Bookard and Carrie Butler.

Those remaining with love and precious memories include six beautiful daughters, Betty Bowman, Leila Ann Mack, Lorraine Stokes, Ivory Stokes and Joyce Miller, all of Bowman and Catherine Stokes of Orangeburg; two special grandchildren, Chinnequil Stokes and Ronica Stokes who were reared as children in the home; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Annie Mae Stokes and Marie Davis of Eutawville, Ellen Shivers of Elloree, and Emma Mingen of Newport News, Virginia; three sons-in-law; seven brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law, two special friends, John Seals and Tyrone Fairey, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 113 Mozell Lane, Bowman.

Friends may call at the residence and at Bethea's Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Mrs. Carolyn Fox Hankins

Mrs. Carolyn Fox Hankins, 53, of St. George, died Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at Colleton Medical Center.

Funeral services will be announced by Brown & Son Funeral Home.

All arrangements entrusted to Brown & Son Funeral Home, 5689 Memorial Boulevard, St. George, SC.

Martha Gambrelle Patrick

Martha Gambrelle Patrick, 50, of 1767 St. Anthony Avenue, Florence, died Saturday, October 20, 2007, from injuries sustained from an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, in the Dukes-Harley Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ben Herlong officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Patrick was born May 20, 1957, a daughter of Gertrude O'Neal Patrick and the late Rev. Marion J. Patrick. Mrs. Patrick was employed by the Marion County School System as a Speech Therapist. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church in Florence and was a graduate of Columbia College.

Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Gertrude O. Patrick of Orangeburg; her brother, Paul Whiteman Patrick of Lexington.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Memorials may be made to Bellingers Chapel United Methodist Church in Fairfax, SC 29827.
