HUTCHINS - Funeral services for Minnie Alice Ruff, 75 of Hutchins, were held for friends and family at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at Ruff House Ministries in Dallas.

Born October 22, 1927 in Joplin, Missouri, she passed away on May 18, 2003. She grew up in a single parent family, being the youngest of seven. She and her family followed the harvest fro Texas to Nebraska. Her mother was a midwife and an Indian healer. Alice was called “Mama” by so many. She knew the meaning of hard work and was a member of the Cherokee nation. Mama met her husband, George (Papa) Ruff in Lawrence, Kansas and they married July 28, 1967. Mama was taking care of just one person, and before long their house was full. It seemed natural for them to take in the less fortunate. Mama and Papa Ruff moved from Kansas to Dallas to a house on one acre soon becoming five acres. The two started the Ruff House Ministries and grew from one building to ten and from around 20 people to 100. Their love was limitless. Their home was opened to the mentally and physically disabled, men, women, and children. The home was filled with lots of prayer, singing, and laughter. Even after Papa was gone, Mama carried on the ministries and she always knew who gave her strength. Mama saw a lot of miracles and always gave God the glory. She was an inspiration to many and was recognized for her work of love by Presidents, Mayors, and Congressmen. Mama was honored and received many awards including The Valley Forge Freedom Award, Points of Lite Award, Good Hands Award, Savvy Award, Good Samaritan Award, Dallas Peace Center Award, and the World Visionary Award.

Preceded in death by her husband George (Papa) Ruff; she is survived by five daughters, Reba Mounts of Dallas, Chris Zander of Grass Valley, Calif., Donna Saylor of Singapore, Michelle Ruff of Dallas, and Carolyn Johnson of Woodlawn, Ark., and four sons, Vincent and Terry Ruff of Dallas, Kenneth Holladay of Eudora, Kan., and Dean Holladay of Lawrence, Kan. She is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. Mama and Papa’s work will be carried on by their children, faithful contributors, and the Lord’s will. If anyone is interested in helping keep their dream alive, please send donations to the Ruff House Ministries, P.O. Box 426, Hutchins, Texas 75141. Arrangements are under the direction of Gonzalez Funeral Home in Dallas.
