EDWARD D. SHAFFER
BRUCETON MILLS, W.Va. - Edward Dewey Shaffer, 87, of Route 3, Bruceton Mills, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born July 20, 1910, in Hazelton, he was a son of the late Ami Roy and Mary Elizabeth (Jones) Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer attended Rush Baptist Church and was a retired mill operator for R.A. Darling Company, Bethesda, Md.

He is survived by a son, Edward Shaffer, Clarksburg; six daughters, Audrey Frazee and Shirley Shaffer, both of Friendsville, Md., Leota Spaw, Mentor, Ohio, Jean Bugay, Cleveland, Ohio, Linda Irons, Grantsville, Md., and Sarah Dyer, Silver Spring, Md.; his twin brother, Carlos Franklin Shaffer, Bruceton Mills; a sister, Anna Sisler, Bruceton Mills; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville, Md., on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ray Perkins and the Rev. Robert Milliren officiating.

Interment will be in Webb Chapel cemetery.

MARY M. SHANHOLTZ
GREEN SPRING, W.Va. - Mary May Shanholtz, 89, of Green Spring, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney.
Born May 11, 1908, in Warsaw, Minn., she was the daughter of the late Wesley and Prudie Ellen (Rogers) Knisley. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John Fahs Shanholtz, on Sept. 4, 1973; two sons, Britton and Wesley J. Shanholtz; and two brothers, Lloyd and Wesley "Willie" Knisley.

Mrs. Shanholtz was a homemaker and a member of the Forest Glen United Methodist Church, Green Spring.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Minnie Marie Largent, Wiley Ford, Mrs. Annabell Jones, Summerfield, Fla., Mrs. Bonnie Jean Combs, Deltona, Fla., Mrs. Mary Susan Hott, Green Spring, and Mrs. Lura Josephine Cannon, Montrose; two half sisters, Mrs. Betty Truman, Keyser, and Mrs. Marie Gardner, Inwood; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Deborah Shreve officiating.

Interment will be in the Forest Glen cemetery, Green Spring.

Memorials may take the form of donations to the Forest Glen cemetery, c/o Linda Landis, HC 86, Box 48, Green Spring, WV 26722.

FREDERICK W. SHARTZ
CARPENDALE, W.Va. - Frederick William Shartz, 60, of Carpendale, and Grafton, died Friday, March 9, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born June 30, 1936, in Clarksburg, he was the son of the late Holbert S. and Cherlottie (Burns) Shartz.

Mr. Shartz was retired as a carman for the Chessie Railroad System with 41 years of service, and was a member of the Transportation and Communications International Union. He was Protestant by faith.

Surviving are his wife, Bernice J. (Ridenour) Shartz, whom he married on Aug. 27, 1955; two sons, William Frederick Shartz and wife Linda, Bridgeport, and Tec. Sgt. Jay Grant Shartz and wife Lisa Marie, Waldorf, Md.; one daughter, Teresa Ann (Shartz) Sapp and husband James A., Grafton; one brother, Lawrence S. Shartz, Rowlesburg; one sister, Mrs. Gene (Larna) Bohone, Nutter Fort; three grandsons, James Heath Sapp and Blake Arthur Sapp, Grafton, and Steven William Shartz, Bridgeport; one granddaughter, Erin Michelle Shartz, Bridgeport; mother-in-law, Mrs. Opha (Bucklew) Ridenour, Kingwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home, Bartlett Chapel, 202 McGraw Ave., Grafton, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 13, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. H. Edgar Suite officiating.

Interment will be in the Woodsdale Memorial Park.

DONNA L. SHATZER
SHORT GAP, W.Va. - Donna Louise Shatzer, 57, of Short Gap, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, at her residence.
Born July 28, 1940, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of Tillio Ted Spataro, Eckhart and the late Mary Alice (Skidmore) Spataro.

Mrs. Shatzer was a homemaker.

Surviving in addition to her father are her husband, Ronald C. Shatzer; two sons, Frank Nicol and wife, Mary Rose, Ashton; Brian Shatzer, Ridgeley, W.Va.; one daughter, Deborah Blankenship and husband, Joseph, Bruceton Mills, W.Va.; three brothers, Raymond Spataro, Eckhart; David Spataro and wife, Gladys, Vale Summit; Thomas Spataro and wife, Linda, Hyndman, Pa.; two sisters, Carol Burr, Conneaut, Ohio; Mary Jones, Mount Savage; and five grandchildren, Jordan, April and Taylor Blankenship, all of Bruceton Mills, and Blake and Danielle Nicol, both of Ashton.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home Wednesday at 9 a.m. with Father Milton A. Hipsley officiating.

Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

GENIEVE E.H. SHINGLETON
ROMNEY, W.Va. - Genieve Estell H. "Turk" Shingleton, 72, of Romney, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at her residence.
Born Sept. 27, 1924, in Capon Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Marshall Lee and Sadie (McKee) Hardee. She also was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille C. Timbrook, July, 1995.

Mrs. Shingleton was retired from AT&T;/C&P; Telephone Company as an operator with 19-1/2 years of perfect attendance. She was a member of the Romney Christian Church, a life member of the Wappocoma Post No. 1101 VFW Auxiliary, and the Loyal Order of Moose Women's Auxiliary, both of Romney.

She is survived by her husband, Arno W. Shingleton, Romney; two sons, Richard Lee Lawson, Dallas, Tex., and Dennis A. Shingleton, Dripping Springs, Tex.; one brother, Paul Hardee, Gap Mills, W.Va.; two grandsons, four granddaughters; one great-grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

At Mrs. Shingleton's request, her body was cremated.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph L. Mercer officiating.

Interment will be in Indian Mound cemetery, Romney.

HERBERT R. SHIPE
KEYSER, W.Va. - Herbert Russell Shipe, 82, of Route 1, Box 136 Keyser, died Friday, July 4, 1997 at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born May 19, 1915 at Hampshire County, W.Va., he was a son of the late John R. and Pearl A. (Shipe) Shipe. He also was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy (Harris) Shipe, on April 10, 1942; and two brothers, Jesse Shipe and William Shipe.

Mr. Shipe was a storekeeper for the B&O; Railroad, having retired in 1977 with 44 years of service. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America; Transportation Communication International Union, District 403; and World Vision. He was a member of the Church of Christ, New Creek and was an avid fisherman and gardener.

Surviving are his wife Elnora Elizabeth "Betty" (Whitacre) Shipe; one son, Herbert H. Shipe, Apopka, Fla.; three step-daughters, Sharon Azers, Mount Joy, Pa., Ruth Spies, Spearfish, S.D., and Betty Stoner, Port Charlotte, Fla.; two brothers, Clyde Shipe, Centerville, Pa. and Kenneth Shipe, Bailey, Col.; three sisters, Lena Hoehe, Betty Ventro and Georgia Smith, all of Titusville, Fla.; two grandchildren; one great grandchild; seven step grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 7-9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Preston J. Miller officiating.

Interment will be in the Indian Mound cemetery, Romney.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 1114, Cumberland, MD, 21502.

BALFORD T. SHROUT JR.
SHORT GAP, W.Va. - Balford Thomas "Tom" Shrout Jr., 67, devoted husband, father, grandfather and Christian, who lived in Short Gap for 25 years, formerly of Romney, died Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born April 30, 1929, in Hampshire County, he was the son of the late Balford T. Shrout Sr. and the late Lelia Alberta (Grapes) Shrout. He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, William, Richard and Guy David Shrout; three sisters, Katherine Shrout, Stella Whitacre and Rosie Hott.

Mr. Shrout retired from the Potomac Edison Power Company in 1981 as a first class lineman. He was a member of the Graceland Baptist Church, Short Gap. He loved bluegrass music and was the leader of the Bluegrass Neighbors Band which recorded four albums. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Betty (Didawick) Shrout, Keyser; two sons, Roger Shrout and wife Lisa, Fort Ashby, and Tim Shrout and wife Sandy, Short Gap; one daughter, Kathy Davis and husband Chris, Linden, Va.; one brother, Carl E. Shrout, Winchester, Va.; one sister, Mabel A. Clem, Romney; six grandchildren, Ashley, Molly and Bailey Shrout, Lindsay and Casey Davis, and Danella Shrout; and two step-grandchildren, Matt and Travis Moyer.

Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Thursday from 2 to and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Frank Hyder officiating.

Interment will be in the Ebenezer cemetery, Romney.

Memorials may take the form of donations to Betty Shrout, Route 2, Box 142-D, Keyser, WV 26726.

Pallbearers will be Paul Clem, Danny Shrout, Larry Shrout, Doug Brelsford, Jim Pyles and Kevin Spiker.
