DORIS J. WHEELER
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Doris Jane Wheeler, 95, of Ridgeley, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 27, 1901, in Tucker County, she was the daughter of the late Albert E. and Loretta (Loughry) Nestor. Her husband, Jay D. Wheeler, died in 1985. She also was preceded in death by a son, Cecil Moore; two daughters, Rosalie Moore Mason and Helen Layman; a grandson, Dale Moore; a great-grandson, David Parsons; and a great-great-granddaughter, Amanda Sue Parsons. Mrs. Wheeler retired from the Down Twist Spinning Department at the Celanese Corp.
Surviving are daughter-in-law, Rosie Moore, with whom she resided; six grandchildren, Theresa Harman and husband Ed, Battle Creek, Mich., Barbara Hosteller, Baltimore, Patricia Parsons and husband John, Cumberland, Richard Moore and wife Debbie, Cumberland, Judy Moore, Ridgeley, and Debbie Kunzon and husband Mike, Arlington Heights, Ill.; 17 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews including Lottie Flanagan, Short Gap.
Friends will be received at the George-Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Harold W. Crabtree officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Moore, Howard Hochard, Michael Moore, Paul Goetz, Jeral Flanagan and Mark White.

KEYSER, W.Va. - Edith Elizabeth Helmick Whisner, 80, of 1020 Georgia Avenue, Keyser, formerly of Beryl, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997, at her residence.
Born Oct. 28, 1916, in Benbrush, Tucker County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Phillip Sheridan Helmick and Eva (Harper) Helmick. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Whisner, in 1980; and three brothers, Garland Helmick, Denzil Helmick, and Foster Helmick.
Mrs. Whisner was retired from Westvaco Corporation with 35 years of service, having worked in Tech Service. She was a member of Bloomington Methodist Church, a member of Westvaco Retirement Association, and a graduate of Thomas High School.
Surviving are one daughter, Elsie Metcalf Carnell and husband Herbert, Westernport, Md.; one sister, Betty Fansler, Thomas, W.Va.; two grandchildren, John Foote and wife Bertha, Piedmont, and Lisa Maloney and husband Ken, Fairfax, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Clinton Foote, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., David Foote, Piedmont, and Tony Foster, Camp LeJeune, N.C.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Donald Nelson officiating.
Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.

JAMES T. WHITACRE
PAW PAW, W.Va. - James T. Whitacre, 70, of Paw Paw, died Saturday, July 26, 1997, at his residence.
Born March 14, 1927, in Keyser, he was a son of the late Wesley and Hattie Whitacre.
Mr. Whitacre was a truck driver for Skyline Oil Co., of Winchester, Va. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of the Woodrow Union Church, Paw Paw.
Surviving are his wife, JoAnn (Kerns) Whitacre; two sons, James Michael Whitacre and David A. Whitacre, both of Cleburne, Texas; two daughters, Deborah Miller, Cleburne, and Toni Kenny, Paw Paw; two stepsons, Gary S. Kerns, Lovetsville, Texas, and Brian Kerns, Winchester; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends will be received at the Miller Funeral Home, Washington and Lee streets, Paw Paw, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Martin Rudolph officiating.

VERNON C. WHITACRE
CAPON BRIDGE, W.Va. - Vernon Clifford Whitacre, 87, of High View, died Thursday, April 17, 1997, at his home.
Born November 22, 1909, in Frederick County, Va., he was the son of the late Boyd U. and Bessie (Parrill) Whitacre.
Mr. Whitacre was a retired orchardist and timberman. He was a graduate of Capon Bridge High School in 1929 and Shepherd College in 1933. He taught school in Hampshire County for 11 years.
He was a Deputy Tax Commissioner for the State Tax Department for 16 years. He was a county appraiser and a land surveyor. He was a State Senator from 1982 to 1988 for the 16th District, where he served as chairman of the Natural Resources Committee and a member at large for the Forest Management Committee. He was president of the Mutual Protective Association and a director of the Capon Valley Bank in Wardensville. He was an honorary member of the Capon Valley Ruritan Club. He was the chairman of the Hampshire County Democratic Committee for 39 years. He was a member of the Timber Ridge United Church of Christ, High View, where he served as Sunday School teacher for 60 years, trustee, and chairman of various building committees. He was also superintendent of the cemetery fund.
Mr. Whitacre married
Madeline Anderson on September 3, 1935, in Charles Town.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are; one daughter, Shelva Jean Switzer, Clearbrook, Va.; one step-daughter, Betty Larrick, Gore, Va.; two step-grandchldren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Timber Ridge United Church of Christ, High View, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the church on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Greg Kenney and the Rev. Edward L. Bishop officiating.
Pallbearers will be Larry Whitacre, Eddie Whitacre, Thomas Whitacre, Robbie Whitacre, Arlan Anderson, Lynn Anderson, and Lyndall Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be the Directors of the Capon Valley Bank.

BURLINGTON, W.Va. - Ralph Clinton Alt Sr., 72, of Route 1, Box 174, Burlington, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at his residence.
Born Feb. 25, 1925, at Smoke Hole, he was a son of the late Lottie Mae (Alt) Reel.
Mr. Alt retired from Seneca Quarries. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the DAV.
Surviving are two sons, Ralph Alt and wife Shannon, and Wes Alt, all of Burlington; two daughters, Linda Dineen and husband Ralph, Little Falls, N.Y., and Connie Adams and husband Paul, Burlington; one stepdaughter, Cathy Riggleman and husband Carl, Burlington; one brother, Charles J. Reel, California; three sisters, Irene Berg and Ann Hesse, both of Maysville, and Louella Rodgers, Annadale, Va.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lyle Berg officiating.
At Mr. Alt's request, his body will be cremated.

KATHLEEN V. HINES
AUGUSTA, W.Va. - Kathleen Virginia Hines, 73, of Augusta, died Thursday, July 31, 1997, at her residence.
Born January 23, 1924, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Osa H. and Mary J. (Shank) Saville. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Hines, in March, 1983, two brothers, and one sister.
Mrs. Hines was a homemaker. She was a member of Augusta Church of Christ.
Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Smith and Debra K. Wilfong, both of Augusta; and four grandchildren, Kimberly Rudy, Winchester, Va., Pamela Smith, Brian Wilfong, and Jason Wilfong, all of Augusta.
Friends will be received at the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
