RANSON, W.Va. - Jessie Baker Cochran, 87, of Ranson and formerly of Clintonville, W.Va., died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at the home of her son, Elden Cochran, in Ranson.
Born March 27, 1912, in Troutsville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Albert Wesley and Iva Johnson Gladwell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Cochran.
She was a homemaker.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by three daughters, Beulah C. Williams of Streetsboro, Ohio, Velma C. Cadle of Talbot, Tenn., and Frances C. See of Pasedena, Md.; five sons, Harold J. Cochran of Summersville, W.Va., Elden J. Cochran of Ranson, Elbert I. Cochran of Arlington, Va., Glenn R. Cochran of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Bobby G. Cochran of Salem, Va.; four sisters, Chloe Faulkner of Troutsville, W.Va., Lucy Palmer and Rita Kerk, both of Williamsburg, W.Va., and Grace Sizemore, Pa.; 23 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Earl W. Cochran; a sister, Opal Lewis; and a brother, Nathan Gladwell.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, 213 Main St. in Rainelle, W.Va.
The Rev. Gatewood will officiate. Burial will be in Wallace Memorial cemetery in Greenbrier County, W.Va.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John E. Hammond
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - John E. Hammond, 77, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Heartland of Martinsburg.
Born Feb. 20, 1922, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Leona Poffenberger Hammond.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Grimm Files Hammond.
He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft, and also worked for various construction companies.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He received the Silver Star, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon.
He was a member of Moler Avenue Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Files Roberts of Martinsburg; a sister, Harriett Howlett; a brother, James Hammond; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. The Rev. Eddie Edmonds and the Rev. Louise Barrett will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery with military graveside services conducted by members of Berkeley Post 14 American Legion, Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW and Amvets Post 38.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alvin W. Gent
BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Alvin W. "Dude" Gent, 73, of Bunker Hill, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home.
Born Nov. 12, 1926, in Portsmouth, Ky., he was the son of the late Elias and Ida Mae Combs Gent.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the Philippines.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine D. Miller Gent; two sons, Thomas L. Gent of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Ronald L. Gent of Bunker Hill; two sisters, Opal Cline of Stephens City, Va., and Garnett Baker of Martinsburg; a brother, Mack Gent Sr. of Bunker Hill; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elena Hager and Jean Byers, and three brothers, Bill L. Gent, James Gent and George Gent.
Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Rest United Methodist Church cemetery in Rest, Va. Roger T. Powell will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted by members of Newton D. Baker Post 896, Berkeley Post 14 American Legion and Amvets Post 38.

Albert W. Smith
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Albert W. Smith, 81, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Heartland of Martinsburg.
Born Oct. 3, 1918, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles Edward and Melinda Shirley Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Richmond Smith; two daughters, Melinda Norman and Lisa Martinez, both of Martinsburg; three sons, Kenneth David Smith, Larry Lee Smith and Terry William Smith, all of Martinsburg; a sister, Lillie Mae Bowers of Tabler Station, W.Va.; three half sisters, Catherine Franklin and Pearl McDonald, both of Martinsburg, and Vivian Brow of Vermont; two half brothers, Perry Smith of Florida and Ralph Smith of East Randolph, Vt.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Wesley Dale Smith; a half sister, Evelyn Sanville; and two half brothers, Charles Smith and Harry Smith.
Services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. The Rev. Louise Barrett will officiate. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran cemetery in Arden, W.Va.

Burney L. Branham
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Burney Lemen Branham, 92, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Canterbury of Shepherdstown Nursing Home.
Born July 24, 1907, in Hedgesville, W.Va., he was the son of the late William E. and Margaret Lemen Branham.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Madolyn Shrum Branham.
He retired from Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 778 and Loyal Order of Moose 120.
He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn B. Reuter of Pittsburgh; a son, William S. Branham of Little Rock, Ark.; and two grandchildren, Jocelyn Earnest and Laura Branham.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Eliza McLurkin, Caroline Hendricks and Margaret Anderson.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. The Rev. Robert S. Hill Jr. and the Rev. Joseph S. Stirman will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Paul F. Cordell
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Paul Franklin Cordell, 87, of Charles Town, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Shenandoah Health Village Center in Charles Town.
Born Sept. 10, 1912, in Asheville, N.C., he was the son of the late Leander Stewart and Nona Stroup Cordell.
He and his wife owned and operated a dry cleaning business in Herndon, Va. Prior to that, he was a superintendent in the construction industry.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received the American Theater Service Medal, Eame Service Medal with two bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edna W. Burke Cordell; three daughters, Pamela J. Bell of Leesburg, Va., Sylvia Diane Goode of Charles Town and Linda S. Gervasi of Centerville, Va.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Creasmon, and a brother, Clarence Cordell.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
