Mildred E. Green

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mildred E. Green, 90, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Born Nov. 3, 1908, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John A. and Ida Conklyn Marklin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Green.

She was employed by C&P Telephone Co.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She is survived by two nieces and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward W. Marklin and Walter J. Marklin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 12:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. John V. DiBacco Jr. will be celebrant. Burial prayers will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg, where a Vigil Service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

The family will meet Monday at noon at the funeral home before going to the church.

Victoria G. Goens

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Victoria Gretchen Goens, 85, of Harpers Ferry, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born Oct. 23, 1913, in Claremont, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Luther and Lucy Johnson Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Goens.

She was a school teacher, retiring from West Virginia University.

She was a member of Camp Hill-Wesley United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Eastern Star.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Hicks; and two brothers, Robert Davis and Curtis F. Davis.

A service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Camp Hill-Wesley United Methodist Church in Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Douglas Fraim will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill cemetery in Harpers Ferry.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Camp Hill-Wesley United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home in Ranson.

Charles C. Cecil Jr.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Charles Cline Cecil Jr., 59, of Hedgesville, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at his home.

Born May 15, 1940, in Lincoln County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles Cline Cecil Sr. and Claire Marie Dunlap Cunningham.

He was a retired businessman.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, where he organized the singles dance on Friday nights.

He is survived by a daughter, Christie Hott of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a son, Kevin Cecil of Martinsburg; a stepdaughter, Cassie Hunt of Martinsburg; a stepson, Matthew Hunt of Utah; a sister, Misty Dunlap of Martinsburg; two stepbrothers, Sherman B. Cunningham Jr. and Phillip G. Cunningham, both of Chester, Va.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held today at 4 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, 2060 Rosedale cemetery Road in Martinsburg. The Rev. Michael Bageant will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Lula J. Magaha

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Lula J. Conard Magaha, 89, of Charles Town, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born July 20, 1910, in Keyser, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Issac and Ellen Conard.

She retired from the Housekeeping Department of Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town, where she was a member of Friendly Sunday School Class and Circle 01 United Methodist Women.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty Emmert of Summit Point, W.Va., and Joan Edwina Fowler of Charles Town, with whom she lived; five grandchildren, Sandy Dorsey of Winchester, Va., Donald Crawford and Lori Orlando, both of Martinsburg, W.Va., Scott Emmert of Green Lake, Pa., and Steven Crawford of Inwood, W.Va.; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by Mr. and Mrs. George Staubs, who raised her; two sisters; and two brothers.

A service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. Dee-Ann Dixon will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 110 W. North St., Charles Town, WV 25414; or Jefferson Memorial Hospital, 300 S. Preston St., Ranson, WV 25438.

C. Wayne Coates Sr.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - C. Wayne Coates Sr., 66, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg.

Born July 2, 1933, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Samuel Clifton and Goldie Turner Coates.

He retired as a self-employed upholsterer; and previously was employed by Berkeley Upholstery. He was employed by The Bon Ton.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW.

He is survived by his wife, May V. Faircloth Coates; a daughter, Bonnie Headley of Martinsburg; two sons, Clifton W. Coates Jr. of Martinsburg and Barry A. Coates of Madison Heights, Va.; two sisters, Ruth Kackley of Martinsburg and Mary Jane Gesford of Falling Waters, W.Va.; three brothers, Marvin G. Coates, Charles C. Coates and Carroll M. Coates, all of Martinsburg; three grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Pastor Jack Rudy will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens with a military service by Newton D. Baker Post 896 and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sara A. Carroll

RIPPON, W.Va. - Sara Ann "Bertie" Carroll, 85, of Rippon, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born March 2, 1914, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Daniel T. and Mary Elizabeth Longerbeam Long.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Franklin Carroll, in 1987.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Kabletown (W.Va.) United Methodist Church, was a past member of Women's Society of Christian Service; Sharing Group; and the choir.

She is survived by three daughters, Gertrude Bell of Bluemont, Va., Shirley Russell of Rippon and Mary Ann Griffith of Middleway, W.Va.; a son, Kenneth L. Carroll of Middleway; two sisters, Velma Jenkins and Mary Violet Mello, both of Ranson; 17 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Lewis F. Carroll and Alec Carroll; three sisters, Nellie Ott, Minnie Chapman and Viola Breeden; and three brothers, Robert Long, Issac Long and Daniel Long.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. Jim Chambly will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
