RANSON, W.Va. - Thomas T. "Tommy" Maeda, 65, of Ranson, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va.
Born May 2, 1934, in Honolulu, he was the son of the late Thomas and Helen Maeda.
He retired in 1997 after 45 years as a jockey at thoroughbred horse racetracks.
He was a Catholic.
He was a member of the Jockey's Guild, and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948 in Charles Town.
He is survived by his wife, Clay Tabb Maeda; four daughters, Donna T. Canino of Mays Landing, N.J., Susan Maeda of Long Beach, Calif., Katherine Maeda of San Francisco and Christine Maeda-Begley of Baltimore; a son, Thomas A. Maeda of Hallendale, Fla.; two sisters, Mearle Tokunaga and Carol Mae Heya, both of Hawaii; a brother, James Maeda of Hawaii; a half brother, Kinji Nakamura; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. Burial will be private.
There will be no visitation.
Russell V. Bayer
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Russell Vernon Bayer, 76, of Martinsburg, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at City Hospital.
Born Sept. 8, 1922, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harrison and Vallie May McDaniel Bayer.
He was a past employee of the B&O Railroad.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a brother, Austin E. Bayer of Jefferson County, W.Va.; two nieces; and cousins.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel in Martinsburg. The Rev. Walter Bowers will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Sarah H. Benner
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Sarah H. Benner, 90, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at Canterbury of Shepherdstown, W.Va.
Born Oct. 9, 1908, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John W. and Effie LeMaster McKee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard A. Benner Sr.
She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Lou Silcox of Martinsburg and Nannie M. Benner of Weston, W.Va.; four sons, Raymond P. Benner, William A. Benner, Cletus E. Benner and Stuart M. Benner, all of Martinsburg; two sisters, Gladys Lord and Beatrice Siler, both of Martinsburg; a brother, Homer McKee of Kearneysville, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bernard A. Benner Jr.; three sisters, Leotah Osborne, Ruth Gano and Mary Ellen Gess; and two brothers, Ganz McKee and Jack McKee.
Services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Robert C. Schoof will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

CARPENDALE, W.Va. - Helen L. McCullough, 74, of Carpendale, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at her home.
Born July 31, 1924, in Greencastle, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Alvin and Hazel Mae Bowman Kriner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth M. McCullough, in 1994.
She had been employed by Cumberland Credit Bureau; and Fairchild Industries, Hagerstown.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild of the Church, Ridgeley, W.Va.
She was a member of Ridgeley Senior Center.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia L. Maiers of Bedford, Pa., and Bonnie J. Marcil of Anchorage, Alaska; a son, Roy S. McCullough of Oak Hill, Va.; a stepbrother, Garvin Younker of Greencastle; and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. The Rev. James Chetock will be celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Md. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Todd J. Catlett, 43, of Martinsburg, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
Born April 5, 1956, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of Vernon B. Catlett and Dorothy Linton Catlett, both of Martinsburg.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Vernon B. Catlett Jr. and Curtis A. Catlett, both of Martinsburg.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Jane Grove Waters, 84, of Martinsburg, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at her home.
Born March 24, 1915, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Edward O. and Anna Odessa Bohrer Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Waters.
She was formerly employed by Interwoven Mills; Ramsey Hess Furniture Co.; Andrew's Furniture Co.; and Schewel Furniture Co.
She was a member of Pilgrim Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth E. Cookus of Martinsburg; a sister, Ruth White of Winchester, Va.; a brother, Edward E. Grove of Martinsburg; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Jackson and Nancy Hillyard.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Earl Francis James, 90, of Charles Town, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia in Charles Town.
Born March 22, 1909, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Henry and Sarah Elizabeth Kennedy James.
He worked in the restoration of antique cars.
He was a member of Charles Town Baptist Church, and the Men's Bible Class.
He is survived by a brother, Cecil R. James of Asheville, N.C.; and cousins, including Anna Brumback and Eleanor James, both of Charles Town, and Anne Tabb of Kearneysville, W.Va.
Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va. Dr. Wyman Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.
