MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Bill S. Hanshew, 90, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Heartland of Martinsburg.
Born Sept. 30, 1908, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late John A. and Bertha Harrington Hanshew.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred V. "Puffy" Puffinburger Hanshew.
He was a 1928 graduate of Martinsburg High School.
He was a retired steam fitter with Local 438 in Baltimore.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He attended Independent Bible Church and Trinity Episcopal Church.
He was a life member of Martinsburg Lodge 120 Loyal Order of the Moose.
He is survived by a daughter, Victoria J. Hughes of Martinsburg; a son, Bill S. Hanshew Jr. of Charleston, W.Va.; a sister, Julia Cardarelli of Forestville, Md.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. Charles Hanshew; four sisters, Elizabeth Hanshew, Peggy Small, Allene O'Brien and Mary "Susie" Myers; and four brothers, Richard Hanshew, Jack Hanshew, John Hanshew and Dennis Hanshew.
Services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Mark D. Johnson and the Rev. Curt Lowry will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

William N. Thomas
RIPPON, W.Va. - William Neal "Rabbit" Thomas, 71, of Rippon, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 17, 1927, in Rippon, he was the son of the late Frank Marshall and Gertrude Payne Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Morgan Thomas.
He was a member of Sylvannah Baptist Church; and attended Mount Harmony Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
He is survived by five daughters, Freida Thomas, Cynthia Thomas, Vanessa Thomas, Gloria Thomas and Sandra Thomas, all of Bowie, Md.; five sons, Lawrence Thomas, Delmious Thomas, William Thomas Jr., Terry Thomas and Kevin Thomas, all of Bowie; three sisters, Onetta Taylor of Jersey City, N.J., Rosetta Thomas of Rippon and Elsie Mosby of Charles Town, W.Va.; two brothers, Clifford Thomas of Charles Town and Robert Thomas of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Grace Johnson, Mamie Trace, Olive Johnson, Parthenia Timbers and Gladys Thomas; and four brothers, James Thomas, Allen Thomas, Ralph Thomas and Benjamin Thomas.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Sylvannah Baptist Church, Rippon. The Rev. Eugene Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Myerstown cemetery.

Raymond E. Allen Sr.
INWOOD, W.Va. - Raymond Edward Allen Sr., 58, of Inwood, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Nov. 27, 1939, in Raleigh, N.C., he was the son of the late Dewey and Arlie Mills Allen.
He retired from Redmen Local 201, Washington, D.C., where he was an ironworker.
He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Charles Town, W.Va.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ellen Kirby Allen; four daughters, Christine Housden, of Charles Town, W.Va., Martha Bogle, of Clayton, N.C., Kimberly Bingaman, of Greencastle, Pa., and Melissa Adams, of Inwood; a son, Raymond Edward Allen Jr. of Inwood; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Runell Stackman; and three brothers, Junior Allen, Gerald Allen and Leeray Allen.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Dennis J. Sieglaff will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

Mary J. Grove
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary Jane Grove, 90, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at City Hospital.
Born Aug. 6, 1908, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Nelson and Maria Belle Syester Miller.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee "Lease" Grove.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by three brothers-in-law, Donald Grove, Howard Grove and Woodrow "Woody" Grove, all of Martinsburg; nieces and nephews. She was cared for by Mike and Mary Jean Grove Helmick.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jacob Golden Miller, Howard Nelson Miller and Charles Leroy Miller.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. James D. Riley will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Hope Elaine Golden, 21, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, as a result of an automobile accident Friday evening in Hedgesville, W.Va.
Born June 16, 1977, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Dennis G. Golden and Janice Faith Golden, of Berkeley Springs.
She was a 1995 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.
She was a senior at Shepherd College, majoring in elementary education. She was involved in teaching field experience at Tomahawk Elementary School; and was a mentor to young children in the Energy Express Program, where she touched many lives.
She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Berkeley Springs.
She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority and a Shepherd College cheerleader.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by paternal grandparents, Glen A. and Evelyn L. Golden of Berkeley Springs; maternal grandfather, Joseph P. Marra of Berkeley Springs; a sister, Faith N. Golden at home; a brother, Dennis G. Golden at home; her boyfriend, Brent Yost of Berkeley Springs; aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Melvin E. and Faith Olive Faith Marra.
Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. John Ledford will be celebrant. Burial will be in Michael Family cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
Viewing will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs. The funeral home will be open Monday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

John F. Gardner III
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - John F. "Frank" Gardner III, 65, of Leetown Road, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at his home.
Born Oct. 13, 1933, in Leetown, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Franklin Jr. and Margaret Blue Gardner.
He was a 1952 graduate of Charles Town High School.
He retired from Allegheny Power System Nov. 1, 1995, after 32 years of service.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Leetown United Methodist Church, serving on the board of trustees for many years. He was a member and past president of Jefferson Charge United Methodist Men.
He also was a member of Knights of Pythias Blue Ridge Lodge 131 in Ranson, W.Va., Allegheny Power System Quarter Century Club, and Citizens Fire Co., Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948 and Jackson-Perks American Legion Post 71, all in Charles Town.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy L. Edwards Gardner; one daughter, Julie K. DeHaven of Charles Town; one sister, Ann G. Sagers of Inwood, W.Va.; one brother, Robert K. Gardner of Burlington, Wash.; and two nephews.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Leetown United Methodist Church in Leetown. The Rev. Paul Ritter and the Rev. Charles Frum will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg.
Friends will be received at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town, Tuesday from 7 to p.m., where Knights of Pythias Blue Ridge Lodge 131 will hold a memorial service at 9 p.m.
